“A wonderful jungle hideaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We stayed at Oxygen Jungle villas during the second week of January 2013. The setting is wonderful - lush jungle, with breathtaking views of the ocean down the mountain.
the hotel is very clean and well-kept. there are a few maintenance issues, such as water leaking out the bottom of the shower door, but in general it is very well run.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, and one can book local tours at the reception desk.
The food was very good. The menu was changed while we were there, and we like the new one. The 'Chef's surprise' was our favourite.
We ate most of our meals at the hotel, but there are also some good restaurants in Uvita and area.
I recommend this hotel, and we will be back.

Room Tip: Both jungle and ocean view villas are good, but we prefer the ocean view.

We would highly recommend staying at Oxygen. It's minimalist living at its best, but has everything you need for a very romantic and relaxing get-away. They've thought of everything, including the aroma you smell when you enter the villa! They provide a mini-fridge, wonderful shampoo/conditioner/body wash, hairdryer, dvd/ipod docking station and a coffee pot with some of the best coffee we had on the trip. You can't beat the value as it's a gem!

Service: This is the one area I would say could improve a bit.. although people rave about the service, so I'm not sure if we just had a unique experience. It started when we tried to get directions to the hotel. After multiple requests, all we received was a very vague map of Uvita. We ended up having no problems finding it with our GPS, but I wasn't happy to start the trip off with nerves as it was stated how remote the location is. Our other complaint is we felt like they needed one person at the front desk at the hours the front desk says they're open (I believe around 7AM-10PM). Instead, it was very hit or miss and the front desk person was usually also waiting tables or wearing another hat. This made for a few frustrating times when we would have a simple request to just grab beach towels or make a dinner reservation, but didn't want to interrupt. We actually ended up booking all of our tours at the Uvita tourism office as they were much more helpful.

Sleep Quality and Cleanliness: The room is kept very clean.. we had a sour smelling duvet due to the humidity, but we just left a note on the bed and the house keeper took care of it immediately... and she couldn't have been more apologetic. I would just say they need to be very cognizant of this as it could really make for an uncomfortable stay. The other thing I would mention is the sliding glass doors have a gap on each of the furthest ends that allow for bugs and occasional lizards to get in. I'm not sure if this can be fixed, but it would help keep uninvited guests out! Lastly, the shower definitely leaks.. a lot. To the point that water travels to the sink banister and water then eventually starts leaking out of the bottom of that. It was poorly designed, so for now, you'll just have to lay a few towels down and be careful not to slip. A couple things that would be nice for them to eventually have in the room... an umbrella and a flashlight as power will go out now and again.

Location: Uvita is the perfect town.. situated between Ojochal and Dominical (about 10 minutes by car to get down the rocky road from Oxygen to the towns main road and then another 15 minutes either direction). Ojochal is known for their fantastic food (make sure to hit up Citrus and Exotica. If you have time, Azul, which is in a hotel, is good too). Dominical is known for surfing and nightlife. We also did a yoga class in Domincal at Bamboo Yoga Tree and would highly recommend it. We made a couple appearances at Tortilla Flats (it's on the beach in Dominical and you have to try their passion fruit/basil margarita and fish tacos) and Maracatu for their tuna and/or vegan/all natural cuisine.
Uvita is known for their beach. At low tide, you can take a 20 minute walk out to the beach that turns into the shape of a whales tale! We loved it because while you're on the pacific side, the rocks protect the beach so it's VERY calm.. it reminded us of the caribbean.
You won't find any commercialized hotels or restaurants within a 2 hour radius. It's pretty underdeveloped, but has everything you need. For us, we couldn't have asked for more.
While Oxygen does serve food, the dinner was by far the most expensive we had and not any better than our other meals. With a bottle of wine added to your meal, you will spend over $100. When we went to some of the very best restaurants around, we spent no more than $70-$80. Obviously, you're paying for convenience at Oxygen, but we personally loved getting out, seeing other areas and eating at local restaurants. In Uvita there is a place called the Baker Bean and they have the BEST empanadas. I had the chicken, but they have spinach and beef as well. I even ate there for breakfast one day they were so good.. and less than $2! There's also a restaurant called 5 Senses in town that is suppose to be very good. We tried going twice, but it was closed. The only other places we ate in town was La Fogata for pizza, The Dome and the bakery at the bottom of the hill for pastries.
Finally, if you dive or snorkel, Uvita has the very best dive shop right in town. It's called Mad About Diving and Pablo and his wife couldn't be more friendly! You will be in very good hands with them.
The hotel is up a steep, rocky road, but once you drive it one time, it's not bad at all. It does get old going up and down (for us usually twice a day), but pretty much everywhere in the area is like that. A car is a must unless you're going to stay at the hotel most of the time. I wouldn't rely on taxis as you don't see them around often. You would have to pre-arrange everything and be set to a schedule. We rented a car in San Jose and the drive took us 3.5 hours going the coastal route. With GPS I can guarantee you will not get lost. It's a very easy drive and you will feel very safe the whole time. There are plenty of signs and gas stations and driving at night is not a problem at all. Oxygen is set on very beautiful grounds.. the pool, the stars, everything!

Spa- We got a couples massage and it was good, but not great. I think they're working on another location to hold these which will be better. The doors that face the pool are kept open to take in the breeze, but you can hear all the conversation below.

Overall, this trip was one of the very best we've ever taken and Oxygen contributed to our wonderful memories. We wouldn't have stayed anywhere else and would recommend Oxygen to all of our friends and family. We hope to be back again some day!

Room Tip: If you stay in a jungle view, request #12 as it has the most privacy. It's the furthest away (st...

We spent 5 nights at Oxygen Jungle Villas and in our opinion an exceptional experience which was influenced by Oxygen Jungle Villas and their staff. Here is what we think you would need to know about the Hotel to help you make a decision:
1) The location is remote and very authentic for a untouched Jungle experience in Costa Rica, however, with O2 you are certainly doing it in style!
2) Rent a car... a 4x4 it is remote and you will probably need the flexibility
3) There are only 12 Villas, so you should experience the tranquil relaxing vacation you are looking for
4) The people including the Owner, GM and Chef and their respective teams fully understand what relaxation means and do their upmost to ensure that they attend to your needs
5) The food is excellent and we found the Chef to be very accommodating, so feel free to put in a special request or two
6) There is a lot to do in the area from guided tours, to surf lessons, to waterfalls etc... but the car helps a lot with that as they don't pick up at the hotel
7) Some great restaurants not too far from the hotel, try Exotica, Ylang Ylang and Citrius they are as good as any you my find in a major city. People we met there also recommended Azul but we didn't make it there. I would also recommend Roadhouse on the weekend, its a bar / restaurant with live bands
8) The bakery at the base of the road is very good, especially the banana bread
9) The Villas are excellent, fully glass but very private which gives you a great experience including their spectacular views
10) This is not a hotel in any form of the traditional sense, the epicentre of your stay is around the infinitely pool with breathtaking views, it feels has a community feel but with respect to peoples individual desires to socialize or keep to themselves

Uvita itself is still very much under developed, it does have an adequate supermarket where you can buy snacks, alcohol etc... but not much else. If you are looking for an alternative to the all inclusive in the North of Costa Rica, then you will certainly find it here, but you have to want a more natural experience. Of course O2 allows you to do that with the kind of comforts that we certainly appreciate!

Room Tip: A room with an Ocean view was our preference and we stayed in room 6 which we think was excellent in...

I stayed here with my boyfriend in January 2012 for 6 nights. I was unsure what to expect as we were driving up the long gravel road to get to Oxygen but immediately upon arrival I was blown away. We were greeted by the friendly local staff (Sylvia and Gabriel) and made to feel welcome as soon as we stepped out of our car.

After checking in and drinking our (delicious) welcome drink, we were shown to our villa. Wow. I have stayed at many 4* and 5* places in South and Central America and these villas can definitely compete with the best. Their setting is incredible and the fact that they are all glass really lets you appreciate the beauty of your surroundings. The property even has a nice short trail to a small stream that leads to the larger waterfall down the mountain; this was a great bonus to our stay at Oxygen. You can't flush your tissue down the toilet but this is standard in most of Costa Rica and did not bother us at all.

We dined with Oxygen on quite a few occasions for breakfast, lunch and dinner. All of the meals that we had were nice and there are quite a few healthy options. We particularly enjoyed the surprise dinners and even had a chance to meet the very friendly chef Fabrizio who prepared the surprise dinners - what a nice touch!

The main area with the pool and loungers is equally impressive as the glass villas, it is not hard to spend hours relaxing by the pool taking in the incredible view from the patio and the infinity pool.

My one and only complaint is that there is no "do not disturb" sign that you can hang on the villas.

Overall Oxygen was a wonderful place to stay and we will definitely be returning. The staff, rooms and pool were all fantastic. I highly recommend Oxygen and have already told a couple of my friends about it. Thanks for a great stay Team Oxygen!!

Room Tip: Villas 9, 10, 11 and 12 are set in the jungle more and have bit more privacy.

Oxygen has a great staff that is very willing to help you in anyway. The villas are clean and very nice for the price. Also we ate dinner there several times and were never disappointed. However the air conditioning system or water system I couldnt figure out what it was behind our Villa 2 was very loud when it turned on and being in the jungle I would have liked to only hear the howler monkeys and birds.Still an excellent place to visit and we will be back.

I just got back Costa Rica and stayed 3 nights at the Oxygen Jule Villa. It was very nice expectantly for the price. The best part was the excellent staff who were all incredibly nice and helpful at all times during the stay, the hotel is very quaint and unique with all class walls yet you still have a sense of privacy surrounded by the lush jungle setting.

Room Tip: If you want an ocean view villa best to ask early. We had a jungle view villa that we liked a lot.

My wife and I spent 6 nights (paid for 7 but missed one thanks to United Airlines) at Oxygen last month. Overall, the resort definitely lives up to its praise. It’s very secluded and has great views of the pacific from high above Marino Ballena. While the resort staff will set up transportation from any of the airports, we elected to rent our own car. In hindsight, renting a car was absolutely the best decision we made; we had the freedom to leave the resort on our own schedule whenever we wanted and without it we wouldn’t have experienced 10% of what we were able to do. Getting to Uvita from SJO is easy enough and the roads are completely fine. From there, Oxygen’s directions are spot on. They even installed a couple of signs on our last day there (which I think takes away from the novelty a little bit). You definitely need 4x4 to get to the resort.

The villas are fantastic. They are very unique and thought they’re made of glass, come with plenty of privacy. Even at capacity there is never more than 24 guests at Oxygen so if you’re looking for peace and quiet, this is your place. Yes there are some bugs but its Costa Rica…get over it. Geckos, toucans, and lizards are a very common sight around Oxygen as well.

Other than Marino Ballena and Manuel Antonio, we passed on a lot of the touristy stuff and instead explored the area on our own. Again, I highly recommend renting a car if you like the freedom to do your own thing like we do. The roads in Costa Rica are not nearly as bad as people say, but they’re not exactly great either. Street signs are non-existent and only the major highways are marked. I bought a Costa Rica SD card for $69 on Amazon and plugged it into my Garmin. If you don’t have one, I’d suggest adding a GPS to your rental. Armed with GPS, a map, and a little common sense you won’t have any problems getting around.

The food at Oxygen is really good, BUT it is definitely way overpriced. We had breakfast the first morning we were there and it was great, but it is essentially “Gallo Pinto” with eggs which is the staple Costa Rican breakfast. You can go to any of the local Sodas and eat the same thing but for a quarter of the cost, not to mention get a feel for the local culture. We did the surprise dinner twice. It was very good, but you’re missing out if you don’t venture out and try some of the local restaurants. Citrus & Exotica in Ojochal (south of Uvita) are excellent. The Roadhouse in Uvita is a fun place that has good food, live music, and is loaded with American expats. Bar Jolly Roger is another expat hotspot way up in the mountain off the main road headed to Dominical. We went up to check it out for sunset (great view of the Pacific) and wound up making friends and partying there for 7 hours. We had a blast and they have the best chicken wings on the planet. There are plenty of fun places like this around Oxygen so definitely get out and explore. We also made a day trip to Domincial and had lunch at Tortilla Flats. It’s nice beach town with a laid-back surfer vibe and there are lots of vendors along the beach who sell crafts and souvenirs.

Overall, Oxygen is great place to stay and the surrounding area is beautiful and a lot of fun. The staff at Oxygen is very friendly (Marco and Chuck are extremely helpful and knowledgeable).

Room Tip: There are 8 ocean view and 4 jungle view villas. We had booked a jungle view but were given an ocea...
