“Honeymoon in paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2011

The view is amazing! We stayed in an ocean view villa and could not believe how relaxing it was to sit on the deck. The hotel is elegant, yet modern. We ate dinner here every night; the food was great! They serve a 4 course meal...each course was better than the last. Would recommend this to any honeymooners or couples looking for romance...

The service and the views were amazing, but everything else was just ok. I was really looking forward to this hotel because of all of the amazing reviews, but I was let down. The couch outside was gross, so we put a towel over it when we wanted to sit outside. The villa had a musty smell, which wasn't helped by the bathroom being open to the rest of the room. Since the toilet area is enclosed by frosted glass walls and no top, listening to your significant other using the restroom wasn't ideal.

The pool was beautiful. Luckily they provide towels on every lounge chair because every cushion had mildew on it. Since there was mildew on every cushion I decided to use the provided towels and not mention the obvious mildew problem.

My one goal at Oxygen Jungle Villas was to get a massage. When we checked in on Wednesday I asked if I could a massage on Thursday or Friday. I was open any time since this was supposed to be our "chill" hotel. They said they would call and set it up. They could not find an available massage therapist on either day, so no massage for me. They kept trying to talk me into a Saturday morning massage, but since we planned on leaving early that morning I had to decline each time they asked.

The surprise dinner food was excellent. It was a tad expensive, but it’s what you have to pay unless you want to make the drive down the hill at night. We weren't impressed with the breakfast and lunch options, so we preferred to travel to Dominical for those meals.

Oxygen was definitely a nice hotel; it just doesn't live up to the hype.

We are happy to hear that you rate the pool, dinner, views and the service from our staff as amazing, but of course our aim is to score ‘amazing’ all around and we apologize that we did not live up to that during your stay. We always aim to be more than just another nice hotel and of course ‘the hype’ did not come out of nowhere. We therefore always act upon all feedback that we get, as well as trying to explain some situations that are sometimes hard to improve due to our location.

As you may have read in other reviews, at our secluded jungle location, in the humid South Pacific, the fight against mildew is a constant one. All our villas have air conditioning, which eliminates excessive moist unless put on the right setting. A perfectly clean outdoor couch can turn spotty literally over a day when one uses it without drying off first and the rainy season makes matters worse. We have not found a material in Costa Rica yet that holds up better than the one we currently use, but as this is such a repetitive issue we have now ordered in special mildew resistant material from the US to re-do every single cushion of every single chair and sofa on the property. We are positive this will solve this issue and we hope to welcome you back in the future to witness the improvements.

With regards to your massage, we normally need at least 24 hour notice. Most people book their massages well in advance by e-mail, taking our location into account. We are in the middle of the jungle and as we are such a small hotel, we do not have masseuses on site all the time. However, we have several masseuses on call and they are nearly always available the next day. During your check-in on Wednesday it was too late for a Thursday reservation and by chance and bad luck all our masseuses were booked on Friday, leaving just the Saturday morning as an option. It is really rare that a massage reservation does not work out and the fact that our staff was trying to convince you to have the massage on Saturday is because we truly care and felt bad about the situation.

If you decide to come back one day to see the results of your feedback, we would happily provide you a complimentary massage. We hope you take us up on it!

I highly recommend staying at this gem of a place. We were handed complimentary drinks as soon as we arrived and were invited to relax in the attractive open-air restaurant as they unloaded our car for us and put everything neatly into our villa. Our jaws dropped when we entered our villa for the first time after sunset. The mood lighting, elegant outdoor curtains billowing in the warm breeze, and the mood music playing on the complimentary player in the room were breathtaking. Plus the fine details knocked our socks off. Fresh flowers, the stone bowl sinks, large glass shower with enormous rain-forest shower head, more than ample storage space, huge comfy bed with awesome adjustable reading lights, real Costa Rican coffee, and the best part -- the glass walls. What a unique experience. No where else have I seen this. You can literally lay in bed in the morning and gaze out into the jungle. And there's a good chance that beautiful birds, butterflies, and cute critters may be gazing back at you. it is really a treat to hear the howler monkeys from your room -- it really makes you feel like you are some place exotic, and on your own personal adventure.

The staff were so sweet and caring. We had wonderful conversations with them, they were so personable and quick to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. And the food was to die for. Not only was it delicious, it was presented with artistic flair on the most unique plate settings I've ever seen. The infinity pool was also gorgeous with views of the sea and the occasional little yellow birds flying in at the corners to take their charming baths. Nothing like floating lazily while looking up at lush trees, stone statues, and beautiful flowers all around you. The best view you could have from a pool. I also told the massage therapist it was the best massage I've ever had as well.

There is also plenty to do in the area considering Oxygen Jungle Villas is located between Costa Rica's two national parks Corcovado and Manuel Antonio. And the beach is just down the path. You don't even need to leave the property to hike as there is a nice trail that leads you down to the river and a refreshing waterfall.

If you are looking for a cutting-edge unique experience, and love tranquility, beauty and nature then this is the place for you. Glass walls in the jungle -- talk about a room with a view!

The view, the service, the villa was outstanding! Rent from the 4x4 from Alamo and the climb up the hill is an adventure...nothing that should deter you. We liked the food, but it was the villas, the atmosphere, the service and the view that made this place so unique and wonderful.

My husband and I just returned from a 12 night anniversary trip to Costa Rica. We stayed three nights each at four different hotels, Oxygen being the last of those stops. Before staying at Oxygen, I'd read all the glowing reviews on TA, had seen that it was featured on the Hot List and had checked out all the pictures on their website. This place seemed perfect for us - intimate, boutique, secluded with gorgeous villas and a stunning view.

Arriving at Oxygen was no easy task. It took our driver a few phone calls to find out how to get there, so be sure to have good directions if you are making the drive on your own.

The Rooms:
The design of the rooms is, in theory, phenomenal. The pictures all look amazing and they seem absolutely perfect. However, we found the execution to be very lacking. Many of the materials used to construct the villas seemed to be on the cheap side - the headboard/closet seemed to be made of very cheap wood, the door to the bathroom and shower often caught on the floor making loud screeching noises. One nice touch was a reading lamp above the bed, but it appears to be a desk lamp screwed into the headboard - a little awkward to actually use.

I love a good rainfall shower, but this one fell short. When using hot water, you get very little water pressure and a motor (water heater?) makes a very loud noise. It actually surprised and scared me a bit the first time I tried to take a shower - it sounds like something is broken.

Nothing says romance like having to dispose of your toilet tissue just a few feet away from your significant other and your bed. No flushing of tp allowed at Oxygen, so be prepared for this.

As some other reviewers have mentioned, the patio furniture is pretty useless - the couch cushions were made of a very thin foam covered with a light cotton, which was very mildewed. We would have loved to sit outside but the couch was very uncomfortable.

I also agree with a previous post that mentions the bedding. The sheets and duvet on my bed at home are of a far superior quality than the old, pilled and uncomfortable bedding at Oxygen. Sadly, same goes for the tiny, scratchy bath towels. Investing in some higher end linens would make a huge difference in the quality of the stay.

When we were shown our villa, we were told that the power goes out on occasion; the staff member said this happens about twice a month. We experienced power outage twice in three days. It didn't affect our stay, but know that this may happen.

The Service:
The service at Oxygen is best defined as quirky. The staff is comprised of a very odd cast of characters. Everyone was very nice and very hospitable, but maybe not really "trained" to work in the hospitality business. Lots of college aged kids, mostly Americans. Again, everyone here was very nice, but Oxygen is not going to provide you with the type of service you will find at a high end hotel/resort.

The Food:
Breakfast and lunch were mediocre at best. However, dinner was AMAZING. If Oxygen were a restaurant in Uvita, Costa Rica, I would fly there just for dinner. We spent three nights and opted for the "surprise dinner" every night. We were impressed with every dish, every course we were served. This was, by far, the best food we had on the entire trip. High quality fine dining.

Amenities:
The hotel has a nice DVD list, but the portable dvd player/tv in your villa is pretty small and not the most conducive to watching a long movie.

The pool area was the other saving grace of this hotel for us. The pool has a nice design and has an amazing view. They could use new cushions for the chairs (getting a little flat and mildewed) and new towels (they definitely show wear.)

Overall Impressions:
As the last stop on our 12 night Costa Rican adventure, we had hoped that Oxygen would be a nice retreat from the go,go,go. This place has a lot of potential but needs some updating and a little more attention to detail.

Room Tip: Request #3- it's set up higher than the rest of the ocean view rooms, giving it a better view of...

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. As always, we will take every bit of feedback very serious and make improvements wherever our guests suggest them. Oxygen is often praised for its attention to detail (which is what got us in that Hot List in the first place) and of course we strive to maintain that high standard and improve even further.

With regards to your specific feedback; all guests receive detailed directions when they make a booking. With these directions in hand, Oxygen is very easy to find. As we mention in our confirmation, without these directions we are purposely nearly impossible to find. We are on a private and secluded location and the hotel is not signposted. This ensures our little slice of heaven stays private as well as quiet, with no unexpected visitors (by reservation only).

It seems you have been incredibly unlucky with your room. A screeching door is unacceptable, but as these are hanging glass doors an incredibly easy fix. A few of the materials used for the villas are tropical hardwoods, natural stone and hand carved washbasins from Bali, aluminum, high end stainless steel fixtures and Helvex taps and showers. We have never heard these described as ‘on the cheap side’, but the problems you apparently had with the reading light, shower and doors may have tainted your opinion a little. These are all things that need to be in perfect working order when you arrive, and we sincerely apologize for the fact they were not. We try to mention one thing as often as possible; we ask all our guests to please inform us about anything (and we mean anything) that could be wrong with your villa during your stay. Whilst preparing your room, we do our utmost to have it in perfect condition for your arrival, but it is possible we may have missed something or something may break after our inspection. In that case, please give us a chance to fix the problem by notifying our staff.

Let me assure all future guests that the toilet paper bin is nowhere near the bed or your significant other. Unless you choose to put it there. The no flushing of toilet paper is common practice in the entire South Pacific zone and this is the first time we heard it can actually affect romance. We offer a sanitary bin and it is both something we can’t change, as not a big deal to most of our guests. Power outages are also common in the South Pacific zone, but on average there are maybe two a month; a little more in the rainy season, a little less in the dry season.

In previous responses to reviews, we have explained our ongoing battle with mildew versus outdoor furniture and the investments we have recently made to improve this. We are winning the battle and the new outdoor cushions are due to arrive any day. We are also constantly updating our linens to maintain the quality that the Oxygen guests have gotten used to over the years. We apologize if this time around, we did not filter out the items of lesser quality in time and will pay more attention to the quality of these products in future. Literally while I am typing this, a brand new batch of hotel towels has arrived and we will continue to update.

One of our missions at Oxygen is to provide a more personalized and passionate service than you would be used to at larger hotels. We select our staff carefully and we indeed have a mix of young people working at the resort. There is actually only one American staff member in our entire team. We have a highly experienced Dutch manager with a solid hospitality education, but we also provide chances to young local Costa Rican people that may not have the same extended training yet, but make up for that with their passion for hospitality. They will go out of their way to guarantee you have a good time during your stay. As foreign investors in a small village, we feel it is our obligation to provide these opportunities to the local community and we will continue to do so.

As apparently you would fly to Uvita just for our amazing dinners, we hope we can welcome you back in the near future to show the actions we have taken with regards to your feedback and we would welcome further input. We would love you to see Oxygen at its full potential!

We loved our stay at Oxygen and think it's a fabulous resort and a great bargain. You should know what it's like before you book it, though, because it is unique.

Oxygen is basically a really awesome set of villas plopped down in the middle of the jungle. There was no attempt to beat back the jungle and tame the place. I think that's great and loved my stay there with my wife. If you expect a Four Seasons experience, you won't get it. You'll see bugs, a few might even get into your villa (especially if you leave the door open while lounging on the patio, which we did our first night). The power will probably go out at least once while you're there and the wifi will likely be spotty. But those things weren't that big a deal to us, although the power outage at night for an hour left us a bit warm to sleep comfortably.

We stayed in villa 12, which is awesome. It's the most secluded of the bunch, which means a bit longer walk, but it was worth it for us. We enjoyed lounging by the pool and the staff was unfailingly helpful. The road is an adventure, but we found it fun. We did have some biblical rain one day that made one of the small bridges a bit hairy, but it was a minor inconvenience.

We're not big foodies and others have raved about the food at Oxygen. We did the surprise dinner one night and weren't crazy about it. It was good quality, but not our thing. Breakfast was pretty good, but not as good a deal as you might get down the hill in town. Lunch was a bit lacking in choice and quality, but most folks aren't having lunch there because they're busy doing stuff, so it's understandable.

Overall, we loved our time at Oxygen and would definitely recommend it, highly. As long as you are okay with living in the jungle and the things that come with that, you'll love your time at Oxygen. We did.

We stayed here for 4 nights on our Costa Rican honeymoon, what an amazing resort.
The drive to the resort was a little challenging but only the first time, after that I got used to it and it wasn't that big of a deal if you have 4x4.

We stayed in a jungle villa and loved to wake up to the sound of the howler monkeys and see Toucans outside our villa.

The food was awesome. My only complaint would be that it would be nice to have a little more costan rican influence in the food. The chef's 4 course surprise menu was amazing every night.

We were there mid-week during off season and i think we only saw about 3-4 other couples, one day we hung out at the beautiful pool all by ourselves. This place is definitely a relaxing oasis.

The staff were very friendly and personable and really took the effort to get to know the guests.

Before we left we were already planning to come back for our 10 year anniversary!
