“Peaceful and very friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2011

I recently stayed at Ancla de Oro in Cabuya for seven nights and I totally loved it. I was looking for somewhere with peace and quiet and I found it. The current owners are absolutely lovely and welcoming and the current manager Nadya and her son made my stay an extra special time through their warm hospitality. I understand that the hotel changed hands about a year ago - so the review here about the hotel being a 'frat house for adults' and the owner making a noise etc...is totally out of date now so you don't have to worry - that was the old owner not the current owner who is very kind! I stayed in the dorm room and found that it was all that I needed and I loved being able to use the communal kitchen, enjoy the tranquil garden and make little trips into the village on the bikes provided for guests.
Also If you stay in Cabuya be sure to eat at the Soda which is opposite the supermarket 'Super David'. It is the best in Costa Rica! The most delicious food and the most friendly and welcoming family who run it! I miss it!

My boyfriend and I spent December and January backpacking across Costa Rica. We found Ancla de Oro by accident, as we originally planned to stay in Montezuma. The two owners, Marina and Neco were fantastic. I loved the atmosphere and the people who were staying there were amazing! It was such an experience. One night the owners made a fish dinner and invited all of the guests to attend. I felt very comfortable there and Marina and Neco did whatever they could to accommodate us. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a true tranquillo tico experience. Two thumbs up!

Ancla de Oro was a big disappointment -- looked great online, but in reality, not so great. We stayed in the largest jungalow with 2 twin size beds and 2 double beds. One of the beds didn't have sheets and the owner said he was going to bring them, but never did. There were only three towels for the four of us staying in the room. The jungalows are located right along the main gravel road in Cabuya and everything in the room was extremely dusty as a result. The overhead fan did not work, so it was a very warm , sleepless night with just one oscillating fan and a bunch of howler monkeys nearby. The bathroom is outside the jungalows and the shower is not heated. We had planned to stay several days, but ended up staying only one night.

We visit Cabuya and love the real Costa Rica over there.
In a litle fisching village with pure nature, beaches and just a few miles from the action of the populair but overcrowded places of Montezuma and Mal Pais.
We found this potential pearl and want to save it from its desperate owner.
So we will not give any review and let the visiters that come after we bought the lost paradise give there opinion.

Calling this place a hotel is a huge overstatement. It's more of a fraternity house for the owner and his drunken neighbors who come and go as they please at all hours of the day and night. Your room may be one crammed with one or two beds where you have to crawl in from the foot of the bed because there is no room on either side to walk. Or you may have a "jungalow" right next to the community kitchen where said drunks congregate to play bad guitar and harmonica music all night.
If you like avant garde European music being played loudly and all day you're in luck! And since it is a community kitchen, plan on having the owner and/or his personal friends eat your food.
