“The best place in Semporna”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2014

If you're in Semporna it is probably because you're diving at Sipidan. If you're not staying on Sipidan Island, then The Dragon Inn is the nicest place in town.

The rooms are nice and clean. They are out over the water on a pier. There are floodlights on the water and the light shines through the floorboards of the room. Some people might find that disturbing and make it harder to sleep but my girlfriend and I found it romantic (a little bit of light but not too much and and not in your eyes if you're not staring at the floor).

The restaurant was good too.

So my sister and I decided to stay for one night when we stopped over on our way to Mabul Island. We chose the dorm room since it's the cheapest. We're from Singapore so we are quite used to mosquitoes - but that was a whole new different challenge! We couldn't sleep the whole night since we were up all night applying repellent and counting the number of bites...

So on our way back, we knew we would not be able to take another night in that hell hole, so we switched to the standard twin rooms which were the next cheapest option. With a small increase in price, we got AC, own toilet (without hot water) and a much much better night without mosquitoes. We really thought it was more than enough, but bear in mind we are budget travelers used to worse hostels.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel only for two nights and that was enough! It is very old and has big RATS running around!
The service is not that great and the breakfast (included with the room rate) is a complete joke!!!
The meal consisted of 2 small pieces of bread with jam, two hard boiled eggs and coffee! That was it! I dislike very much that kind of eggs, so I asked for srcamble eggs and the waiter said, ¨Sorry, the only way you can have the eggs, is hard boiled, no other choice"
I had to pay extra to have my eggs scrambled! There were like 10 young girls working at the restaurant both mornings, and ALL of them looked tired, unhappy, they were not friendly at all! I found out later, some of them live at the hotel and work LONG hours!!! Hopefully they get paid for their work!
Beleive me when I tell you this is a bad choice! Do not stay at the Dragon Inn Resort!
Lots of trash floating in the water below the hotel! Not a good sign, the employees are not keeping up with the property! Whenever the locals asked me which hotel we were staying at, as soon as they knew it was the Dragon Inn, they all would ask: "Have you seen any rats?"
I asked my husband to change hotels and we moved to the Seafest Hotel, down the road, which was a much much better choice! The front desk manager told me a couple of "rat stories" from the Dragon Inn! You do not even want to know about them!

My spouse and I recently stayed here for four nights. The most positive aspects are its proximity to Semporna's main shops and restaurants, and the food in the Inn restaurant is okay, not bad. We are thankful that we did not pay for our room as guests of friends also staying here. If we had paid we would have felt ripped-off. The rooms are spartan and need renovation to get up to resort hotel status. There is a lot of trash in the sea water around and underneath the Inn rooms which reflects a greater general garbage disposal problem in Semporna. Many many plastic bags, water bottles, soda cans, brown foamy stuff and more greet you when you step outside and return to your room, every day. On the morning of April 27 the sea water was filled even more with floating trash- an abundant day to see local trash riding the tide. Also on the morning of April 27 there was no water in our room bathroom. When I went to the reception desk to ask what the problem is, the response was that the water tank was being refilled. One would think that the water at a "resort hotel" should be refilled before running out so that hotel guests who are paying a lot of money have running water. And when I asked for the usual, daily two bottles of water they asked- "what for"? To which I said- "so that i can wash my face, brush my teeth, and drink water because there is no water running in the room". After making this request two more times, it took the hotel reception desk people another minute to decide to hand me two bottles of water. So there seems to be a big problem with water and trash at the Dragon Inn and in Semporna. Additionally, on the morning of April 26 at 12:30am, very loud, bass thumping music was playing in front of the hotel. I called the front desk to do something about this. To which the clerk responded that the loud music was not their responsibility and that the loud music was not on hotel property. I informed them that people with their parked cars in the Dragon Inn front sign, VIP parking area was playing the music. So should the police be called then? The front office clerk responded that the police could not do anything. Thankfully, the cars left and the blaring music ended 15 minutes after the conversation with the front desk. One other thing, in this day and age WIFI should be free to Dragon Inn guests like it is in most other hotels around the world. To conclude this, it would be advisable not to stay at the Dragon Inn under these kinds of circumstances. The Dragon Inn rooms need renovation up to international standards. And officials of the city of Semporna ought to take action sooner than later, to manage the trash problem (for example- organized trash collection and using an incinerator perhaps?), the water shortage problem, and implement a noise code law in the city proper and enforce it particularly late at night until 8am in the morning.

My family and I stayed for one night just to have a liltte experience in Semporna town before we off to Mabul Island. i booked the cheapest room which located at the back of the resort. My mom love the wooden architecture. 100% of this resort are made from wood called 'Cengal'. the toilet located outside but attached with the room. upon check-in you'll received a coupon to aquarium. but the aquarium is not what you have in mind (beautiful fish in a glass box with colorful corals), it's more like a fish cage. please remember to bring along your mosquito repellent if not you won't be able to sleep and it's very hot at night even the room got a/c. The morning breakfast is very basic. They serve half boiled eggs (boiled actually), toasted bread n a cup of coffee. Overall, the hotel is quite nice for tight budget but the trash beneat it spoil the view.

Room price is slightly expensive (bear in mind with very basic breakfast.just toasted bread and tea). The room has very basic features. Bedding is ok..for a short stay. Bathroom..far from luxury
.toilet bowl was a bit crusty when i came in(i always have been fussy with toilets anyway) sadly, all the drainage with be flushed directly into the sea below you(pity the almost extincted fishes)
The aircond, i think the management seriously needs to send it for a quick maintainance.

I chose to stay in the inn just because of the enviroment..rather than stay in comfortable plain hotel..which there are more other choices in Semporna.

Overall, the management MUST do some improvements. I read many feedbacks from other previous tourist, mostly they complaint of the management's lack of sensitivity towards maintaining a good ecosystem.

When we booked we had a vision of staying in a lovely hotel on stilts, with crystal clear water and exotic fish swimming past. The reality is somewhat different! While not solely the fault of the dragon inn, the water is rancid and heavily polluted by litter. There are fish - but these are in the hotel's "aquarium", a sad and needless affair at the end of the jetty, where some large fish are kept in miserable cages with little to keep their interest other than swimming around floating discarded plastic bottles. There is a strange overall vibe to the place, but that said the rooms were perfectly fine (though you have to buy use of wi fi by the hour). If you are looking to stop a night before heading off to the islands it will do - though we subsequently experienced far better places to stay at in the town.
