“Basic... Haven't seen any rats!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2012

I was pretty uncomfortable about staying here after reading the trip advisor reviews. We arrived on the overnight bus from KK at 5am. The hotel let us check in at 7am, no additional charge which we appreciated. 77RM for double room with air con in the F block.

The room is fine, the bed comfortable and there is no evidence of rats in our room. The hotel does not have WIFI despite there being an address. The towels are old and thin with holes. This hotel is one of the top ten floating hotels in the world, I can only assume they are included in that list by reason of it being built on sticks. We normally stay in budget hostels so don't consider this place as being that bad. If you are used to 4 and 5 star resorts, this is not the place for you.

This place is fine for one night, Semporna is a dump, dirty and smelly with rubbish everywhere. Get out of here as fast as you can.

The stay at the floating dragon inn turned to a nightmare! A very expensive nightmare by the way... We paid 450 MYR per night and received the following:
We discovered heaving rats in our bedroom because we found rat dirt and destroyed personal things in the room. When we informed the reception about destroyed pants and a damaged book, the reaction was quite poor. We found the things when we returned from dinner on January 28th. Both items were lying on our bed, which proved that the rats have access to the bedroom. Sleeping that close to rats that come during night time when we are sleeping is an unacceptable circumstance. The book actually was lying next to my pillow when it got eaten...The staff was not able to react in any way that night, so we started searching for the rat ourselves. What we discovered is: the rates have eaten already parts of the bed, on all sides. It’s hard to believe that the hotel staff has not recognized this before. When searching underneath the mattress we found silverfish in our bed. During night time I was bright awake and when the rats came we started hunting it. It peed on the floor and we found rat dirt on the couch in the first room as well as in the wardrobe behind the sleeping room. The rat disappeared underneath the doors. We made pictures of all these findings.
We informed the hotel staff about this before we left but did not receive any reaction. We left a note for the management and guess what they offered: two free nights at Semporna Dragon Floating Inn… This is just a bad joke and the way the hotel owner dealt with this is simply out of question.
We never received any compensation for the damaged things and in addition to that there are no warnings or anything to give you a hint to secure your things. When we checked out we had already paid the 3 nights, otherwise I would have not. Pretending to not know about the rats is ridiculous since the rats where crawling in the reception we had the discussion there…

Room Tip: actually we stayed in the only available VIP suite but the rats are all over, so no chance to not sh...

We booked our stay for three days(77Rm a night). If we would have gone through a dive agency the cost was 7RM cheaper for the standard rooms, or you can book the budget rooms for 66RM. Only difference in the rooms is location. the budget rooms are on the last row of rooms, which located closer to one of the small piers. I imagine in the morning it could be a little loud, but if you are diving, you will get up early regardless.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Also, they dont require you to pay for any nights in advance, which is could; if you are like us our diving plans changed several times.

I would highly recommend staying here over all the other options.

We stayed for one night on the way out to Mabul - We arrived late and left early the next morning to go out to Mabul. Its a perfect location as its right on the water and its a one minute walk to the get the boat out. Its a large sprawling floating hotel which in itself is unique. We stayed in a standard room it was large with aircon but no window. It was well furnished bathroom was a bit basic but for one night it was fine. You get towels, and soap and a toilet roll upon check in.. Breakfast was 2 slices of toast and tea or coffee. They offer a selection of rooms and i thought it was good value. the only drawback was that the walls were really thin and whoever was next door had the tv on all night - didnt bother us as we had earplugs. Overall basic but you get what you pay for and i dont see the point in staying in Semporna more than one night - much better to get out to one of the islands. I would stay here again if it was just for one night.

This Floating Resort Hotel sits by the Waterfront. Stayed two nights here, 1st night stayed on a Twin Room cost RM99 where the room was located near the Reception & 2nd night a Double Room cost RM66 where the room was located at the last row of the Resort/Hotel. The Resort/Hotel consist of few rows of rooms where the Reception is on the 1st row. Room size between rooms are same only the location different. Room A/C is not strong but usable. A wardrobe are provided in the room to hang clothers but smell old & musky. Cheaper hotels can be found at the town area within walking distance. Breakfast is provided consist of 2 toast & a cup of Tea/Coffee.

Room Tip: Keep valubles with Reception when you gone Diving for free

I really love this resort, I dont expect a 5 stars treatment because it is not. Many price range and type of rooms... suitable for family, couple, solo travellers and backpackers.

The dorm is RM20 per night (no towel provided)(soap provided) but really match with their price.... and the standard room which is RM66 (towel & soap provided) the cheapest located back of the resort but no a big problem...room and toilet is clean and I don't encounter any rat at all during my 2 night stay... nice place to stay if you need a place to sleep before go to Mabul/Sipadan Island.

Very basic breakfast. The staff at reception is also friendly and helpful. Overall it is real value for money. Definitely come back.

It is extremely noisy here as the walls are just bamboo type material and it right out in the port so there is a lots of noisy boat traffic.

The bathrooms are smelly, dark, have squat toilets and cold showers so basic but OK.

The hotel is known around Semporna to have rats but I decided to go for rats over bedbugs (Scuba Junkie hostel). I didn't expect to end up with one on my bed though! I moved beds from the corner to the middle and it was fine, at least the rats didn't do me any harm. Semporna is a dump overall to be honest!

Room Tip: Don't choose a corner bed!!!
