After paying our tributes to Lord Mahabaleshwar at his temple , we visited a really big temple originally constructed with large black stones by King Singhadev of Devgiri in the 13th Century . As soon as we entered the temple , a big kund i . e . cistern was seen . The cistern was fed by water coming out of a mouth of a stone cow . On both sides of the cistern , there were steps . We climbed the steps and walked a spacious passage leading to a stone wall opposite the entrance of the temple and at the back of the gaumukh . At the base of the wall , there were seven outlets . On top of the outlets name of individual stream was written in red letter .
It was told that , in the ages before , Brahma , Vishnu and Mahesh came to this place . Vishnu and Mahesh had their consorts with them . They decided to perform a Yadnya . For this , a consort was necessary , but Brahma did not have his Savitri with him . So he married a local girl , Gayatri and performed the Yadnya . Hearing this , Savitri threw herself in a rage and cursed the three Gods to get converted in water . In retaliation , the Gods returned the favour . Thus Brahma became Venna , Vishnu became Krishna , Mahesh became Koyana , and there were Savitri and Gayatri . Thus these five rivers originated at this place and started flowing through the outlets which were constructed later . The water of these five outlets spaced 1 m apart flew separately through stone channels perpendicular to the stone wall for a while and then joined a stone channel across the originating outlets and then jetted out of the gaumukh in the cistern below . Then this water again got separated in the cistern itself and flew below in separate direction as individual rivers .
. On the north side there is a similar conduit through which holy Ganga appears every twelve years. From conduit on southern side holy Saraswati flows on the auspicious occasion of the Kapila Shashthi Yoga.which occurs when the following astrological times come together : Bhadrapad month, Shashthi tithee , Tuesday, Sun in Hasta Nakshtra, Rohini Nakshatra in predominance and Vyatipat . This Kapila Shashthi Yoga comes after every 60 years , thus Saraswati appears after every 60 years .
Therefore this Panchganga temple is the Sacred Saptganga temple .
