Mahabaleshwar MTDC is a safe bet. The rooms are private, spacious, well lit with a lot of breathing space in between. The restuarant serves decent food with not many choices. The MTDC property is very huge and is located in New Mahabaleshwar. The Mahabaleshwar temple is approx 8 kms from this resort. Make sure to visit Elphinstone point(12kms from resort) for sunset - club it with the visit to temple & Arthur's seat. Visit Wilson's/Kate's point for sunrise.

I have stayed here many times and always loved the property , the hotel is spread accross acres of green dense trees. I always prefer the cottage rooms as they are spacious and centrally located, close to the PWC canteen which serves amazing food and also close to the point where you get the best sunset view minus the madnening crowd. Didnt like the aurvedic treatmenets offer at the resort as much.

Room Tip: Cottage rooms are the best and comfortably accomodate 3 people

This is one of the best places which is value for money in entire Mahabaleshwar. We had been to this place twice (with friends during summer and as a couple during july), both the occasion we stayed in this resort.
Although Resort is located just a km from market place, it feels completely different and far from hawking sounds of Mahabaleshwar market where most of the other places are located. Resort has well distributed accommodation ranging from 750 to 4000 based on the requirement. This place is amazing during summer as well as rainy days.
Place around the resort is very safe infact we took a stroll around 12 midnight although it might be scary... especially when one of their cottages is named as "Krishna Cottage". Even during the rains, the rooms are dry and well maintained with clean sheets. In fact they provide you with clean sheets and warm blankets every day which makes the stay comfortable especially after long walk in rain/drizzling.
The food requires a special mention, we had doubts about food because it is government run and also location is far from market, but they have excellent cuisine ranging from Chinese (ofcourse indianised) to Punjabi (especially Tandoori chicken is best). They do not do room service to some rooms which are located far away from the dining place considering the length and breadth of place..
The place also have some kind of ayurvedic spa centre where all kind of massages are provided, but can be avoided...
Although the place is amazing during the rains, one must take precaution while walking to dining area or coming out of room because of water there is green algae every where making even the clay foot path slippery... almost fell down twice, but saw couple tripping which was scary....
overall, this is one place located not far away from buzzing activities but make you feel you are 100 km away from any activity.... any one would appreciate this property, more especially if you are from Mumbai...

Room Tip: If you are travelling as a group, cottages located on the far side of the resort is best because it...

For a clean, spacious dwelling in a beautiful green surrounding, nothing beats MTDC. If you are looking for a 5-star holiday then this is not your cuppa but for an honest space to spend a night or two or three or more... dont book anywhere else.
The rooms are big, clean and well maintained (and we took the 'economy' lot so I imagine the others are as good if not better)
There is a huge space to stroll, sit and if you have kids.... play. In fact this play space (actually multiple spaces) is the best I've seen and my 3 children were only too thrilled to get out of bed and and climb onto the nearest slide or swing - which was just outside.
The bed tea was spicy and yummy although I would not put the rest of the available food on par with the bed tea.
In fact while I recommend stay here, I recommend food at Rambha Resort - a super eatery 15 minutes walk from the back gate of MTDC.
Ok - it takes around 40 leisurely minutes to walk to MTDC from the market so if you're not a walker, cabs will oblige for Rs 50/-.
But at the same time I must add that the distance is very do-able and with 3 children (youngest being 4 yrs old), we made the journey at least one way daily for 4 days. Stopping part-way to have meals at Rambha Resort made the distance seem shorter.

Besides the Mahabaleshwar municipality has kindly arranged green benches lining the road so one can always take a break when needed. When on vacation there's plenty of time to do what one does not normally get a chance to do in the city - relax, go slow, BREATHE fresh air and take in nature.... Stay here and you can do it all.

TV in your room ensures you still connect with the outside world and there are tourist cabs at your doorstep when you decide to check out the history and sights around.

Ok there are plenty of our simian pals hanging around all day so it may be better to confine eating to the room or the restaurants but we had no trouble with them.

Booking via HO at Nariman Point was hassle free too so overall I'd definitely go there again when we next visit Mahabaleshwar.

Room Tip: All rooms are well located.

I stayed in Family room (no AC) here in Nov-2012 for 2 days.
Rent: 2200 + tax (per day) and 200 Rs deposit (refundable)
MTDC property is very nice. Rooms are good and clean.
Family room has small entrance lobby, room with 3 beds, TV, table and another small room with cupboard, 2 chairs, sofa set (3+2) and Drinking water filter.
Best Part is you can park your car near your room. Bombay (sunset) point, Falkland point is just 2 km away.
Restaurant is nice, serves good non veg (we tried some chicken dishes.. soup, kebabs, butter chicken, sandwich) and avg veg food. Service in restaurant is not good.
Best Part: Price, Location, non veg food (not easily available in Mahabaleshwar these days), cleanliness
Worst Part: Electric geyser in bathroom. (runs only for 20 sec to provide extremely hot water and then trips automatically) you can NOT use shower, hand shower even if they are available.

Thanks,
Amol

a nice relaxed place...near to mkt..we stayed in cottage which were very spacious...the place could do wth some better upkeep..cottages from 1 - 16 are better ones and are better kept...the food is strictly OK..but would suggest stepping out of hotel for food..
there is a restaurent called sayali near petrol pump near mkt...food is delicious there also the sizzler joint next to it is recommended...
if you want to be in a relaxed place..close to nature then this is the place..

Room Tip: cottages from 1 - 16 are better
