“Avoid this place and you will not be disappointed!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

We booked a double bungalow from the Mbuyuni Beach Village for six nights (for Christmas holidays) through the hostelbookers.com. When we arrived there, the receptionist showed us a list of reservations to confirm the availability of bungalows. I found my name as the 7th one on their list of a total of 18 names. However, some of their staff had used a pencil to overwrite my name on the list, meaning that our booking was no longer valid although we had paid our reservation fee many months earlier. The receptionist then told us that they had booked us a room from another bungalow village in the Jambiani village center, but that place did not have a swimming pool and was generally of lower quality than their place. When I was trying to ask the reason for the cancellation of our booking, the receptionist started to tell stories and lies about the problems with internet, etc. which, however, did not justify why my name was on their list and then cancelled by them in the first place. They were not even willing to give us our money back or to give us any discount if we moved to the other lower quality bungalow they had already booked for us. The dishonesty of the staff at the Mbuyuni Beach Village did not end there as they next took us to the Shehe Bungalows where a worn out room with a broken mirror, dirty bedding, irregular availability of water in the shower, no towels, etc. was waiting for us. As a compensation they promised to bring us two matresses to be used on the beach, but as we expected these matresses were never brought to us. So, avoid the Mbuyuni Beach Village at all cost unless you want to experience the same bad management, poor customer service and relocation to a lower quality accommodation as we did during our Christmas holidays in 2012. In addition, the beach in front of the Mbuyuni Beach Village is not good for swimming, so it is better to book some other bungalow closer to the Jambiani village if you really want to enjoy the joy of swimming in the Indian Ocean.

We spent a glorious 10 days at this hotel in Zanzibar. The rooms are nice, the beach is beautiful. The satff are gracious and accomadating. Mickey and Shehe will do anything to make your stay better. They arranged a driver to take us to a spice farm and stone town. They arranged for my daughter and I to get a massage (on the beach). When a beach front room opened up after 3 days stay, we were able to upgrade to 2 beach front rooms!

We stayed at Mbuyuni for 2 nights at the end of October and personally it was a bit of disappointment. I honestly believe that the people running this place are trying, probably trying very hard to make this place nice, but...

It is situated about half way between Paje and Jambiani Village in a quiet secluded location. The bungalow we stayed was facing ocean & swimming pool. The porch was big with a cushioned bench and a sun bed and we spent a lot of time there lying around, reading and simply relaxing. It was very tranquil.

The room was reasonable. 1 double & 1 single Zanzibari beds with mosquito nets, a bench, a coffee table, a dresser and a stool.
There was a small shelf and a clothes hanger as well. Basic, but not bad at all.

The trouble was that all the niceness of this place couldn't quite compensate the problems we had. First was the fan. Despite there was a dial to adjust the speed, we could use only one setting which was "5" (noisy) or any other settings caused the fan to stop working. To be fair, they were nice enough to offer us another room but it was so much smaller and nowhere near as good as the broken fan room, so we decided to stay with the original one.
Second was the shower. Barely a trickle of water came out of the shower head. After spending all day in heat and sand, we really fancied a nice & decent shower but we couldn't have one while we were there.
The beach was not great. It was fantastic to see it from the distance, pure white sand & turquoise water, but once you got there you would notice so much seaweed, torn bags which locals used for gathering seaweed & shellfish, plastic bottles and other junk scatter all along the shore line. I couldn't help thinking that if the tourism board & the local hotel owners worked together and employed some people to clean up the beaches every day, it would improve the conditions of the beach, image of the island and the tourism itself significantly and on top of that it could be a small solution to the unemployment problem they have on the island...

Someone mentioned that the towels and sheets were changed daily, but it wasn't the case with us. Also, the towels were certainly clean but they were as hard as dried loofah.

Food wasn't bad. The breakfast was basic but the fresh juice was very nice. By the way, you should watch out for the wasps when you are having breakfast. They'll come to get your jam so you might find your toast covered with wasps!
They seemed to serve coffee for free all day, which we found to be very nice.
If you are having lunch or/and dinner here, you are encouraged to order them a few hours ahead of the mealtime. You will still have to wait for a long time to get served though. Service can be really, really slow. The food quality wasn't bad at all, we did enjoy our meals here and they were reasonably priced as well.
We also checked out some of the neighbouring hotels’ cafes & restaurants, some looked better than the other. There are quite a few to choose from within an easy access from the beach so if you are staying here for a long time, you might like to try them for a change.

All in all, this place could be so much better if they fixed some problems. And anyway, the biggest disappointment of all (the beach condition) wasn't entirely the hotels fault...

This hotel consists of 2 room bungalows located on Jambiani Beach. The staff was quite courteous to any questions or concerns. The hotel grounds have a great pool area ,a restaurant that serves three meals a day with beverages served same vicinity. The huts on the beach have books you can read with hammocks as well. The rooms were clean with shower in bathroom there isn't anything yet a screen for the windows so you might bring valuables to be held at front desk yet haven't heard of anyone getting things stolen. The hotel turns off electricity from 11:00 HR until 19:00 HR.The hotel is located 4KM from Paje/ Paje Beach where the nearest stores/stands are as well as a post office .There's no lighting on the roads in this area at night so it's not advisable to walk not that it isn't safe.Taking a hired taxi is about $25.00 USD there is a morning bus to Stonetown that costs $10.00 USD.I would stay here again if I went back to Zanzibar without a doubt.Note: The high tide comes in late morning that is about the only time to go swimming into Jambiani Beach as it looks like a muddy marsh the other times of the day, same with Paje Beach. The ocean water is 77*F/25*C.

We visited mbuyuni in june for 4 days as part of our honeymoon. The accomodation is clean and offers good value for money being right on the beach. The staff are friendly and the food is also good value. There is a different menu everyday for lunch and dinner, very nice calamari and octopus..we also liked the swings to relax on the beach.
All in all we would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a cheap but nice alternative.

We stayed here for a few days and even that we knew that this wasn't a 3 star accomodation we expected a litte bit more. At first our room wasn't properly cleaned. When we arrived the stuff from the former guests like water and wrapping papers where still on the floor and after 15 minutes it was possible for us to go in our room well I do not know how people clean there house but when I clean my bathroom it will take more than 15 minutes so a bungalow will take at least more than one hour for properly cleaning. There is a lack of maintenance on the whole estate which I found a real pitty because it has a lot of possibilities if you do it correctly and I surely think that they can make a lot more money if they will do some more maintenance for the whole estate. Even plant some more flower plants to give it a more romantic feeling. During our stay there was no light on whole zanzibar which gave it a certaine feeling because I always travel with candles it was no problem for us but I can imagine that some people can feel a bit unsafe. There is no possibility to swim on the beach. If you walk a little bit north you will find a good beach to swim. The swimming pool is nice but not so big. The food was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpfull. I really hope that the owner will do some more maintenance and make Mbuyuni a better place to stay.

We enjoyed a family stay here in early September, 2012 and loved it. The rooms were clean and appealing, the food was great, nice salt-water pool, gorgeous sunrises and the staff was friendly and eager to help. We rented bicycles for a trip in to Jambiani and that was and adventure in itself. We enjoyed playing in the surf but do take flipflops or water shoes because the bottom is rocky in places.

Room Tip: We had the room right at the end near the beach - it was great to go to sleep and wake up to the sou...
