“Perfect Lodge for trips around Zanzibar and Tanzania”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2011

All new in Red Monkey since December 2010:

The new saff includes a star-chef in the kitchen, a multi organising 24/7 Manager and the new English-German-Italian speaking European Owner "Mark".

The Loge is really small (only 9 rooms) but very tidy and personal.

Even thow the Loge is not in a top central location the owner Mark will organise everything including Taxi, Trips to Safari to Tanzania, Blue Safari, Transfers to the Monkey forest, and ...

... all food on your personal wish: fresh lobster, king prawns, fresh tropical fruit, etc.
anyway, the dayly 4 course menu (with 3-4 main dishes) is more than enough and all of an extreamly good taste ...
-
Sensational vegetarian food on demand .

Compliments to everybody in Red Money Loge.

I hope my next trip to Africa allowes me another stay in your place

Cheers

After a long plane trip from Europe and stop over in Dar es Salaam, 2 hour ferry trip to Zanzibar and 2 hour drive to the East Coast, how refreshing it was to reach our paradise - The Red Monkey Lodge Hotel.
It is only a very small lodge, but has a romantic feel to the place.
The rooms are clean, somewhat basic, but cool. We were on holiday and only used the rooms for sleeping and bathing, the rest of the time we were out and about.
Met the owner/manager Mark, who is strange but a likeable person who comes from Europe.
Food was great, bar right on the shore of the Indian Ocean.
You must visit this place.

A hidden gem. At the end of a rough track on zanzibar's east coast, not far from paje, we found this small hotel. It seemed to have been recently refurbished and it is certainly trying to make it's mark. We were only visiting for dinner but would definitely consider staying if we were to visit zanzibar again.

The very attentive manager told us that he wanted a reputation for the quality of his food and his chefs didn't disappoint. We were served one of the best meals I have ever eaten. 4 courses of locally sourced produce, easily the best food in zanzibar.

I have heard the kiting isn't bad either!

We enjoyed visiting Red Monkey Lodge, the staff were very friendly and the restaurant is right on the beach. The rooms open directly onto the beach with a beautiful view of the ocean. The thing that really stood out though was the excellent food. We had the best meal here of our two week stay on Zanzibar. I would definitely recommend Red Monkey Lodge.

A very good location at the end of the bay but service lets down this hotel. Food was not particularly good and there was no option but to have the daily 4 course dinner. There was no price list for food or drinks and these turned out to be more than other places we stayed at. The hotel has mainly a young clientel who have come for the kite surfing and they can be rather noisy late into the night. Rooms are clean but very small and utilitarian, not even a small table for your bits and pieces. There is no generator back-up to deal with the frequent power cuts the island has.

Regarding the quality of the food, i believe sufficient other guests forunately have expressed their (different) opinion on this forum.
However regarding the price i want to underline that the price for either of the two different daily changing four course meals is usd 15 which is the equivalent of about 8 pounds. The price for a beer is usd 1,80, a soda is 80 cents and bottles of wine rage from 12 to 30 usd... I dont think that you can define this as pricey...
Also there is always the option of chosing only one item of the table d'hote menues or a chefs salad, pasta of the day and a grilled catch of the day (items ranging from usd 3 to usd 10) like many guests in fact decide to do in particular for lunch. On request, we also serve seafood platters, sushi dinners among other items, that also are popular among residents of the area.
Regarding our crowd: we only have 9 rooms therefore it varies highly (since i have opened after refurbishment end of december 2010 i had over 20 nationalities inhouse with all kinds of ages and backgrounds), but i am sorry if you felt out of place with the young crowd of kiters that was there during the 3 days (!) of your stay.
If expecting 24 hours of electricity on zanzibar i reccomend you chose a high grade resort or another destination for your next holidays.
It would in any case have been nice if you would have expressed your opinion by person while in the lodge...

I've stayed at Red Monkey several times in the past. Most recently was in Dec 2010 when it was relaunched under new management. What I experienced was a much improved offering in terms of the accommodation, food , service & direction/identity. The rooms are completely renovated & they are simple yet stylish, with their own unique character and an appropriate minimalist beach feel that is perfect for a beach bungalow. Although there were a few small renovations running behind at the time (i.e. bathroom mirrors), they were all installed by the final day of our stay. The food is greatly improved, there's no a la carte menu, but a selection of a few daily specials that are of good quality & often feature an interesting Thai influence. Service from management is greatly improved thx to Mark's passion, skill & experience which will lift the standard of the staff soon enough. Mark has also given the lodge some good direction & identity by including a Kite Surfing & Dive centre. The area between Paje and Jambiani is ideal for Kite-Surfing, and the beach at Red Monkey is ideal for those who want the same conditions but in a quieter area with less kites & more space

We are a family of five who spent Christmas at the Red Monkey Lodge, on a quiet stretch of beach in Jambiani. The lodge had just reopened after renovation and under new management, and in fact we were the first guests. Because of that, there were a few details that still needed attention, but overall we loved the lodge and had a great time. We would have stayed longer if possible! The rooms were spotless and lovely, the food was great, the beach was beautiful. The outdoor dining room is special-a pleasure to eat there in the morning and the evening. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Our host Marc made sure we had one lovely dinner after another featuring local ingredients.
We liked that the lodge was not isolated from the village and we got to experience the local culture. Mark was very helpful in helping us arrange a village tour (highly recommend), a bike trip with a local champion cyclist, and a Zanzibar-style Christmas feast at a restaurant in the village.
The lodge does not have a pool, but we were allowed to use the pool at the small hotel next door, which was very nice.
So if you want a quiet, beautiful spot on the beach where you will be taken care of (Hakuna matata!) in style AND get to experience local Zanzibar life, I highly recommend the Red Monkey Lodge.
