“Adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

The hotel is located on the fantastic white sand Jambiani Beach, but the location is a tad aggressive, too close to the water, which means there is no beach left at high tide. The rooms are clean and spacious but without aircon. The best part about the rooms are the wonderful balconies with great views of the sea.

The service is a mixed experience as some members of staff could seem arrogant or reluctant to work while others were perfectly okay. The hotel has its own tour company, but we experienced that some of the drivers barely knew English or just had no experience in how to behave with travellers.

This hotel was recommended to us by a family friend and we expected a nice place with good food, but we were really disappointed! Rooms are without air-conditioning or good working fan, there is just some cheap old fan, which doesn’t work very well. My parents had the more expensive room, which was quiet ok, but the cheaper room (which is for 90 Euro still very expensive!) was nothing special. It was extremely hot there, no fresh air and in the middle of our stay get something wrong in the bathroom and the staff was not really able to repair it and it smelled until we left. One day it was absolutely not possible to use our bathroom and take a shower.
Also the food was not as expected, or better to say it was not good. It was some crazy mix of Tanzanian, German and fast food kitchen, which was everything, but not tasty. We spend five nights there during Christmas, and it was the last time, we visited this place. The manager wants to do some special offers like dinner on the beach, but it would be better do cook good food, prepare nice breakfast and put good working fan or air-conditioning in the rooms. The place would be ok for 30 to 50 Euro, but not for 100 Euro!

My friend and I stayed at the Blue Oyster for 5 nights after 3 weeks of adventure on the mainland. It was exactly what we needed!

The rooms were spacious and clean and very comfortable for our stay. I love all of the wood details and I wished I could have brought the furniture back home with me! I did find the rooms to be hot though, but that is the climate and the fan provided relief when the power was working.

I spent most of my time on the beach lounger with a book, enjoying the sound of the waves and watching life go by - fishermen at work, women harvesting seaweed, children coming to and from school. They have massages available, as well as Henna and hair braiding (which I took advantage of!).

The staff were very welcoming and lots of fun! They booked our activities for us (Stone Town and Spice Tour - also recommended!) and it was actually very hard to leave and it began to feel like home!

The restaurant was tasty and you can walk down the beach in either direction to find other options for an extended stay and when you want a change of scenery. Just make sure you check the tide tables in the lobby before walking home in the dark!!

What a lovely place!
I stayed there for one night and would definitely love to go back for more.
The staff is quite friendly, the hotel is well managed and quite clean ( I think it's run by germans and that why it has higher standards compared to similar places in Eastern Africa).
The view from my room was lovely, it's literally right on the beach, the only drawback though (and I'm sure it's not a drawback for everyone), is that if you're staying a bit longer you don't have many dining options because there's not much near by, you kind of have to dine in the hotel's restaurant every night, which is a very good restaurant (but a little bit over priced).

The blue oyster is a beautiful hotel. I stayed there for one night when coming accross from Stone Town. We would have stayed longer but there was more of the island to explore and we were also on a budget. The rooms are spacious, clean and endearing. The beach area everything you'd need to relax in the sun on the stuniing beach. You can have a massage, which my friend did for$25 and also hire Captain Zappy to take you on his boat to go fishing and snorkling. he charges $25 and i thoroughly reccommend it. The food in the restraunt is also superb and all of the staffare very friendly.

We stayed five nights in a seafront bungalow. We think the 95 euro's is a little overpriced (we also went to Casa del Mar a kilometer further along the coast, 90 dollars/70 euro with swimmingpool which is a big plus during the hours of low tide). During our stay most guests were retired Germans. Food in the bar and restaurant is good though cheaper options in the neighbouring restaurants. But in the end we enjoyed our stay!!

We had a warm & informative reception here.
The rooms were so comfortable.
Everything worked. = )
The dinner - lobster for two - was the best I have eaten in years! We called out the chef to congratulate him. Service was good too.
Only a few recommendations....would be convenient to have a front verandah exit to the beach instead of leaving through the back door to walk around to the front. We looked silly climbing over the verandah rail all the time. The outdoor bar is such a nice touch but it closes down when the sun sets. I am sure you could boost bar sales if you kept this open later. Does it close to encourage guests for dinner > bed? We missed not having a pool at this place.
The staff were friendly and I wish the Blue Oyster Hotel all the best. "Asanteni sana" !!

Room Tip: We had a ground floor room. When the power cut during the night it was very hot. It might be a...
