“Best in town by far”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

I once again stopped in to check out a hotel and booked 1 night, ended up forcing my self to leave after 15 nights. The hotel sticks out like a sore thumb cause it's the newest building in Lopez or anywhere nearby. Nice eating area inside and out on the patio for meals and sunset drinks. Beers are properly chilled to ice cold! My room upstairs beach side was great. Yep, they are new and haven't finished furnishing yet, what do I care about a chair being plastic, as long as my bed is new and comfortable, which it was. Beach at the front door is a nice long walk and lots of other beaches and National Park sites nearby. I have to laugh at some reviews, especially the nasty ones from Ecuadorians, but sorry, in the grand scheme of things this a big step up over most places to stay in small town coastal Ecuador. Nice staff and at the end of town so quieter, sometimes there is a band that rolls by in a pickup around 06:30, to wake you and they are not to bad! Never fiqured that out but they were fun.

Room Tip: Facing the beach of course.

We stayed at the hotel the week of December 30, 2013 for four nights. It was last minute and there were few options with vacancies so we stayed here. It was passable, but I would not call it excellent or a gem as other have. Not sure what they are comparing it to? I think this hotel is overrated on Trip Advisor.

First, the location is pretty good, sitting directly in front of the ocean. We stayed in a room on the first floor facing the ocean with no AC. The room had a double bed, single, and a bunk bed. There was not much space in the room, only other furniture was two plastic chairs. It was basic and clean, but it seemed to me that for $125/night, they should offer more. There were no other amenities offered. Like many hotels in Ecuador, they have an anti-family pricing policy. They would rent a similar size room with one double bed for $50. There seems to be a belief that pricing should be per person though they are simply cramming more people in a the same space and have just put in a few extra beds.

Second, the room reminded me of the cheap motel room you stay along the highway somewhere where you are just looking for a place to sleep. It does not seem like the kind of place you would go for a vacation. Our approach was to get out early and do things in the areas as the hotel was not a place you wanted to hang around in. The area is wonderful.

Third on service, they only replaced the sheets on a third day and often times only gave us 2-3 towels, though as mentioned we were paying for 5 people. Being in front of a beach, they have not thought through how to give space for you to dry your bathing suits and towels. The breakfast is ok. Though any request for any deviation is met with an extra charge, sending a very negative message. On the last day (Jan. 1), they seemed overwhelmed at breakfast and we waited 1 hour and half to get breakfast. Also messages on the door, saying things like we are not responsible for your items in the room. This sends the message that they do not trust their staff and you should not trust them either... again sending the message that this is a cheap place.

Despite this, the older gentleman that seemed to be the manager was extremely nice and courteous though.

I think there are few good hotel options in Puerto Lopez, though Hosteria Mandela further up the beach looks like a much better option. If you do not need to stay in Puerto Lopez, look at places in Las Tunas and other nearby areas.

This hotel is directly at the beach and run by a young brother and sister that really know what hospitality and good service is. The hotel just opened, and even as we were staying somewhere else, they showed us around. It is a really nice and clean place. We had a wonderful dinner their with a view over the ocean. You should really try their special coconut shrimps.

Thank you so much guys we had a wonderful evening with you!!!!
Regards, Corinne and Ino.

My wife and I spent several nights here after only planning to stay one. This new hotel is located right on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. The outside area of the restaurant faces the ocean and the gentle breeze and sound of the surf is a very soothing backdrop while enjoying gourmet quality dining. Be sure and ask for the Cocomo Special, a succulent coconut sauce and sprinkled shrimp dish not on the menu. The inside dining area has plenty of window views of the ocean as well. Sunsets from the vantage point of the Victor Hugo are indescribable. The rooms are comfortable and air conditioned. The brother and sister team of Steve and Jennifer are of Ecuadorian descent, but are Americans and offer excellent arrangements for tours or just friendly conversation in English. This hotel is not the cheapest rooms in Puerto Lopez, but is unbeatable for comfort, value and service.

No research, no idea where to stay in Puerto Lopez. I was walking down the beach in the evening when I saw the Victor Hugo Hotel and immediately thought that this symbolizes Puerto Lopez at it's best. After speaking with the staff (a bother, sister combo) and being shown around this new and very well constructed (using native bamboo and other indigenous materials) building I decided to stay the night, which became several nights until I had to leave for home.
Wonderful and beyond expectation helpful staff---brother and sister helped me out with travel connections and made the prolonged stay well worth it. The ambience is a delightful mix of laid back and efficient.

When we got to Puerto Lopez it wasn't busy and we had the pick of places to stay. This hotel was recommended and to its favour it is beautiful and brand new but that wasn't enough. Service at the desk the first day was average, the room was clean but the air conditioning wasn't functional. The bed, like most in Ecuador was uncomfortable by North American standards but again not a concern. The part that was impossible began 10 pm when the chicken farm next door started with the roosters. It was a relentless 6 hours of those birds cawing themselves hoarse. I understand that people host chickens as food and pets and what have you. But when it is aside a hotel it is beyond reproach. For $50 a night it was not worth $5.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

Traveled to Puerto Lopez Sept 9th, 2013 to take the Isla de la Plata tour and had the pleasure of staying at the Victor Hugo Hotel. The complex is new, well managed and rooms are clean with comfortable beds. Breakfast of eggs, toast, juice & coffee is included in the price. Would recommend replacing cold, dry toast with warm fresh rolls as the (pan) breads in Ecuador are wonderful. Front-desk personnel speak Spanish and English and are helpful and friendly. I would recommend the Victor Hugo Hotel to my friends and family as the place to stay in Puerto Lopez. Overall a good experience.
