“What the hotel lacks its made up for in service.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013 via mobile

The owner was very service oriented.

The breakfast was good and it was included with the price.

The room was a little loud but its because we were close to the center of town which can be a curse and a blessing.

The manager went above and beyond. It was raining when we left and he took us in his personal car to our next destination. We would stay here again.

1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

I made a reservation, via Booking.com, for a spacious room with queen bed for a 3 star hotel. The room was NOT spacious, but small, dark, and, it so seemed, not very clean. The hotel was nowhere close to a 3 star hotel, even for Ecuador, where stars are given more than liberally.

Perhaps because the owner was on vacation, the service was nothing like a 3 star hotel. I had to ask for towels. Received one fairly big towel and one bath mat, both grayish in color. Had to ask them what was wrong with AC. Well, it turned out that, the battery in a remote was missing/ not working. There was no hot water in the evening - NONE. The breakfast was less than adequate, by the Ecuadorian own standards. There was a rose colored water masquerading as fruite juice. There were 2 pieces of fresh bread, a bit of fruit salad, with mostly water melon, and undrinkable coffee. There was no restaurant service in the evening, perhaps because the owner-chef was not there.

Turned out that their published rates,(they will show you their price list) were much lower (30%) than the Booking.com rates. Quite honorably, they refunded me the overcharge and so it came to $25 for a room with an AC and small TV. And this is the MAX any single person should consider paying for this hotel, where I stayed for one night, moving in the morning to a much better hotel - Pacifico

The location of Piedra del Mar is very good - just half a block away from the beach. The so called swimming pool is a misnomer and, given the standards of cleanliness of that hotel, is not trustworthy. It can be an adequate budget place, just do not overpay :) You will be better of dealing with the hotel directly - reservas@piedradelmarhotel.com - on all subjects. The owner Santiago communicates in English, though not always promptly :) But this is Ecuador - tranquilo :)

We decided that we wanted to treat ourselves for final stay after six months in South America and so glad we did. The air conditioning was a welcome relief, the room clean with comfortable beds, great bathroom and cable tv. We enjoyed using the outside space (although never made it into the pool).

After staying in the Sun Inn (hostel) we were surprised to find that although more expensive due to the amenities of the hotel and how much more comfortable it was, it was much more superior value for money.

The general manager spoke English and was able to recommend an excellent company to visit Isla de la Plata. We found that the company guides both spoke good English and was very keen to explain ecology of the area including the wildlife. In fact on the way over he spotted a pod of dolphins which we were able to take a closer look at while the other groups passed us by.

We ate dinner there one night and it was very good - grilled shrimp & lobster. However, the next for times we tried to have dinner there, they claimed to be closed or the evening. There was no sign stating closed; the entrance was open. Very deceiving.

The place is simple, with some nice extra touches. The people working in this hotel went above and beyond in friendliness and service, and even helped me with phone calls and plane tickets when I got in a jam. Perfect location, 2 minute walk to the beach and the best ceviche in town.
