“construction makes you wonder....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

The hostel is under construction so it all looks like a building site and when you arrive you don't know where you are going. it will look great when is finished. owner will take your valuables and secure it in her house. Kitchen fair size and location within walking distance of shops and bars.

they will organise a good tour for you to Isla de Plata. Breakfast is good so recommend it. hot showers as well,

Room Tip: Do not stay in the cabins towards the back entrance stay in the middle or near the owners house.

we stayed 1 night in a private cabana with private bathroom

+ well situated in a calm area, close to the beach
+ nice garden with cozy common area with free wifi
+ good breakfast, which was ready at 7:15 (we had to catch a bus) - first time in south america that breakfast was early and on time
+ shower with hot water and good presure

what could be improved in our view:
- cleaning of the room (floor was full of sand and dust, the mosquito net was smelling like an unwashed dog)
- provide wifi in the rooms

our conclusion: okay, but next time we would look for a better option

$10 for a bed in a dorm with 3/4 other beds or $13 including breakfast. I went without breakfast and instead bought food from the bakery for half the price.
Beds come with Mosquito net and there is a shared bathroom with a hot water shower. Seemed a bit temperamental but when it was working it was good. Also there's a large communal kitchen and a microwave for if the gas runs out. Rooms cleaned daily. Good wifi in the hammock/breakfast area by the front. There are lots of cabins at the back for $30 ($15pp) not including breakfast.
In general the crowd here seems older and its very quiet. Aside from the bitey puppy I'd say family friendly but a bit boring for young people like me!
PS. Reception is not signed but go through the first gate, past the hammocks continue through another gate and then its on your right.

We liked this place, it has nice green property and friendly service. The price was really good, especially as it included a complete breakfast. We were lucky to stay in a brand new room closer to the exit and the beach, so we could actually hear the waves in our room!
Lovely, homely place! We will definitelly prefer this on our next trip to Puerto Lopez!

Itapoa hostel is a little walk from the centre of Puerto Lopez, in a quiet environment. The place is not amazingly great but certainly good value for your money. We had a lot of rain during the days that we were there, so our cabaña was quite humid, but that's something you can hardly ommit in wooden huts. The staff was friendly, the room and bathroom was clean and the breakfast was good.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

Most people go to Puerto Lopez to take a trip to Isla de la Plata - we booked the tour through the Itapoa hostel and it was fabulous. We saw all the wildlife we wanted and more, the guides and boat were very good, and there were snacks and lunch to keep us going all day. Very good value at $30 per head.
The hostel itself was fine, but we did have a few issues.
On the positive side, there was a nice little cafe to sit in for breakfast - which is included in the room price and is generous and fresh. The rest of the day the cafe claimed to be open but there was never anyone there when we looked.
The rest of the sitting areas we found a bit gloomy and uncomfortable. This might be partly to do with weather, as we visited during the time when Ecuador's coast is blanketed in clouds, and nothing looks quite so appealing when there's no sunshine.
Our two biggest bugbears were these. 1. The communal kitchen was revolting. We had to steel ourselves to use it. The fridge had not been cleared out for weeks, at least, and was very very dirty, rusty and full of rancid food. The whole place is in serious need of a deep clean. When travelling long term, kitchens are essential for many people, and they should at least have a basic level of hygiene. If hostels are going to provide one, there is no excuse for not cleaning it properly. It was also very dark and gloomy. And, inexplicably, it closed at 8pm - which meant everyone was rushing to cook, eat and wash up by 8.
2. The room prices given on the website are 3 years out of date, which I was told when I emailed to make a reservation. This is just really irritating, and so unnecessary. They know it is wrong, so why has it not been updated? I negotiated a price to somewhere in the middle, but it really would be fairer to everyone to put the correct price on the website, which is nearly double the rate currently stated.

It's a nice place. Had my own cabana. I think it was 18.00 or 15.00 per night, including breakfast and Wi-Fi. Pleasant people. It is a very hot, dusty town. This felt like a bit of a refuge. It was also carnival time so even though it is down the beach a bit, I still had to endure the boom, boom of all night bass in town. But otherwise it's a decent place to stay.
