“Rochester, worth defending.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Had a day trip down to Rochester to visit the castle and cathedral on a very hot bank holiday Monday.... and got a complete folk festival thrown in for free ... what are the odds!

Apparently Rochester has a folk festival every year, called the Sweeps Festival.

The castle, built in 1066 by someone called Norman, (am I missing something? ) is a great example of history that can be touched and smelt, but not tasted, thats just disgusting...

£5.80 adult entrance. Small gift shop. Lots of steps...did I mention LOTS of steps. Great views of the Cathedral, river, surrounding hills etc.

Learn some history. It really is a lot of fun!

“May day celebrations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013 via mobile

On a sunny bank holiday weekend we got to see the local tradition celebrating the maypole (men with painted black faces) imitating the young children who cleaned the chimneys. What a fantastic day of local tradition and food aplenty! My girlfriend having never been here, really enjoyed herself.

“Great example of a true Norman Castle.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

If you happen to be in Rochester, then this is a must visit. On a clear day, you get some amazing views, not only of the cathedral, but right along the medway. Audio tour definitely adds to the experience and is best visited during off peak times if you want the place to yourself. Will probably be busier with tourist and school groups during the summer.

One word of warning, the stone spiral staircases leading to the top of the keep are hundreds of years old and not particularly friendly if you can't normally climb stairs or a disabled, although you can still access the inside of the keep.

It can also get quite windy at the top of the keep as it is completed exposed to wind on all sides (as we found out!).

Overall, highly recommended.
