“Codswallop!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

As many people may know Matlock Bath is full of chip shops, so there's many to choose from! If you didn't know, you do now!

As the weather was so nice, we decided to have a drive out, call into a few garden centres, then park up at Matlock Bath. As usual, on a Sunday, the place was heaving, the atmosphere jovial. It was Mother's Day too and many families were making the most of the wonderful weather.

We decided we'd have a bite to eat, and sit indoors, so we walked a short distance and came across Kosta's. Wished we had carried on walking!

There was quite a few available seats, and a few taken, so I sat down whilst my partner ordered, tea, coffee, one mini fish special (fish, chips, mushy peas, slice bread/butter) and fish cake and chips. Price £7.80. Many of the fish and chip shops were advertising mini fish specials for £3, with a drink, £4. So the price charged was on par with others in Matlock Bath.

The staff did not seem to know what they were doing, a lot of people were waiting for their orders.

After ten-fifteen minutes the coffee was brought out, we told the waitress we'd also ordered a tea. This came five minutes later. After nearly thirty minutes our food was brought out, but the waitress forgot the cutlery so had to make another journey. We then asked for ketchup, the top was loose and a great big splodge was squirted on one plate, thankfully at the side not on the food! None of the staff asked any customer if everything was alright, so zero customer service.

So really our experience was not a nice one. Quite a few customers were grumbling as to the long wait for food.

Think the owners/management need to rethink their service. Instead of shouting out, who's ordered this that and the other and customers getting wrong orders, why not give the customer a raffle ticket with each order, then you only have to call out the number, giving personal, faster service. If not a raffle ticket, a number that can be placed on the table so people can get their correct orders.

I've given one star as you can't leave a zero. Don't think we'll be back to Kosta's in a hurry, there are many more cafes/restaurants to choose from who cook tasty, hot food in a reasonable time, not over half an hour for a simple, traditional meal.

“Excellent value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2014

M wife and I took advantage of the mini fish meal offer which includes a small fish & chips (although plenty for us), peas, bread & butter and tea or coffee. All for £4. It was so good we went back the following night. Short wait for food which was freshly cooked. Well recommended.

“Top Quality Haddock”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

We popped into one or two chippies in Matlock Bath and I liked the look of the fish at Kostas so I ordered 3 haddock and chips to take out. It was cooked while we waited. Light crispy batter - enormous piece of fish - very fresh and tasty. Top quality. Decent chips.

“Half decent chippy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

Stopped here wandering through Matlock bath and in the mood for fish and chips. Service was good, waited about 10 mins for food for 4. Good sized portions and fish very tasty. Chips good too. Reasonably priced. Would go again.

“Great place to hang out on a weekend with the rest of the biker's!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Kosta's staff are friendly (a bit on the slow side at times and if you give them a gentle nudge they bring your order with an apology).

The owner and his family are the most friendly people I have come across in a long time for such a small establishment - the food is cheap but far from cheerful - you would pay a lot more for decent food elsewhere in Matlock! As a person with wheat intolerance I have found good quality food I can eat and enjoy and the staff go the extra mile to accommodate your need's.

We tend to visit most weekends for our hot chocolate fix and sit with the many other biker's that arrive here (whatever the weather there will always be at least one out on a weekend).

Tables are outside & inside but if you wish to freeze outside you will find ashtray's and the staff keeping the place clean - there are umbrella's and a good amount of seats for the size of this establishment.

As I say you can always find a warm welcome, the staff get to know you when you go regularly and know what you want to drink.

It can get busy but if you go early enough you will at least get a seat somewhere!

We have tried other cafe's and are not impressed with them so we stick to here and since the refurbishment it is cleaner and the menu is vastly improved.

You can have food & drink or either of these combinations you don't feel obliged to have food when you are there.

If you want a friendly biker place then try Kosta's - you won't be disappointed. They have a breakfast club on a Sunday morning in the summer about 8am if anyone is interested and a ride out from here ;-)
