We stayed at the Hodgkinson's Hotel in the first week of June, 2005. I chose it based on the fact that it was in the town of Matlock as the other hotels on TripAdvisor where out of town. It actually ended up being at Matlock Spa rather than Matlock itself. We chose the standard double "The Calke" as we were arriving late and leaving early however for £75 I would have been better off at one of the standard chains. We got a pokey room with a bed that sank in the middle. The minute bathroom was clean with fluffy white towels however the shower cubicle had seen better days with the door not even shutting properly hence wetting all the carpet (yes, a bathroom with carpet!!!). The kettle was ancient as was the TV. I wouldn't have minded all of this if it was cheaper but for that amount I could have had a comfortable bed with blackout curtains and a decent shower/bathroom. To top it off, I had booked us into the restaurant thinking that would be perfect after a long drive, however it was far from what the website boasts. The same employee who checked us in was also doubling as waitress, the food being served looked far from the Modern European Cuisine I was expecting from a menu ranging between £12-£18 a main and it certainly wasn't a restaurant, it was a front room/bar/reception all in one. We did however have a fantastic home cooked Italian at "La Caverna" not far away, so if you do have to stay in Matlock Spa make sure you eat there.
