Not one of the newest and nicest of the Van der Valk hotels but convenient to the highway. Great location as a hub if you are planning to use it as a home base when playing tourist.

It has a quirky charm of its own and a cool history.

The hotel has meandering hallways and you have to go through the dining room and up and down small flights of stairs to get to your room.

The rooms themselves were clean and comfortable but not luxurious.

We had dinner in the dining room and breakfast in the morning room.

Dinner was excellent even thought it was a VERY VERY busy night. The Valk can always be counted on for excellent food.

Breakfast was standard for Holland. (Thought not as good as I've had at some Valk hotels) However the area they use for the buffet service was quite cramped. Considering the number of unused spaces and the huge main dining room.

I would stay here again.

We stayed here on a bike trip. It is probably better suited for a highway stop as it is located off the exit of one of the main highways. Its a sprawling place that seems to have been built in phases. To get from the front desk to our room we had to pass through a large, and at times busy, restaurant. Our room was nice and clean. The restaurant food was average, but pricey as there was no competition nearby. Breakfast was okay, which sums up our entire experience - not bad, but not great. You wouldn't go wrong staying here.

Rooms are being updated and I luckily had a 'new' one. Breakfast was quite nice and had a good variety of items. Bar was major let down. Not open on some evenings and when it was and despite being full, shut at midnight. Hotel pricey for what it is. Suggest if you don't have a car stay somewhere else as €110 taxi ride from/to airport but was booked for me by my client so had no choice!

Room Tip: Ask for the updated rooms

Due to the KLM Open 2012 was the only hotel available near Hilversum, hotel is non -smoking facilities but if you are a smoker you can ask for a room with balcony. Keep in mind that if you do not have your own transport ithe only way to reach neighboring cities is by taxi, the Hotel is located close to an Highway exit. The rooms are quite small furnished with late 70's furniture, the cabinet is very small and if you will stay more than 2 days could be not sufficient, there is no mini bar and air conditioning did not work. In the bathroom there was no place to hang towels, but overall it was all pretty clean. It 'available a free connection wi-fi for 2 hours even if it is not very fast. The price of the room, 87 Euro per night, was not included breakfast, buffet breakfast costs 10 Euros per person which is a fair price for what you need.

It is along the highway and without a car you are in nowhere - there is a restaurant there though.
I had a superior room with balcony which was totally modern, large very clean with a bathroom which had shower and tub. The room itself was excellent but the glass front to the balcony open to a balcony yes, but the balcony is not separated from the other room balcony which means one has to keep the curtains closed all the time because people can walk in front of the room. As a woman traveling alone it is a bit uncomfortable. the minibar is a mini beverage dispensing machine with a small selection. Very nice bedding as well. Staff at reception in the evening was rude.

Room Tip: Do pay the 10 Euros more to upgrade to a superior room it is worth a totally new room

I did not choose to stay here and had no expectations. My business colleague set it up because it is near his home and we had an early morning. Truthfully, under ordinary circumstances, I woudl probably rather stay in Amsterdam and take a train out ot Hilversum if I had to.

Hotel is alongside a major highway ( the A1) and any rooms facign the front of the hotel will be noisy if the windows are open. I had a room on a wing in the back facing a farm behind the property and it was fine with the window open. Yes, there was not great soundproofing INSIDE the hotel.

I will disagree with the previous reviewer, there is free wi-fi in the hotel, but it is only free for 2 hours. So if you can get away with a quick synch of email, you will be fine. Lots of surfing, you will need to pay. But it is 2 hours per day. I was able to get 2 hours in the evening and then again 2 hours the next morning before checkout.

Overall, the hotel is a bit old fashioned and the room I was in felt a bit out of date to me, though clean and large. The class of room was a whirlpool bath suite. The bathroom had recently been renovated and had a huge spa tub that I could literally lay flat out and float in. I loved it after the long flight to the Netherlands from the US.

Had lunch in the restaurant....a chicken caesar salad and an asparagus soup (it was spargel season!), which was fine if a bit pricey (about $27 with mineral water). Breakfast buffet was typical offering of meats, cheeses, cereals, breads, etc.

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights over the easter holiday and I regret it as we did not get to sleep at all although we supposedly had a quiet room as requested. Got an economy room with the last minute offer. There are better hotels in the area for less than this hotel's normal price. (we go to this area often)

The hotel is located right on the highway close to a nature park where you can go walking or biking. The hotel is pretty well isolated from the highway noise (located right on the highway). However, the indoors has absolutely no soundproofing. You hear all the noise from the stairs and hallways as well as the bathroom noises from the neighbouring rooms. The hallways have a lot of doors in between and they all slam closed as do the room doors. Groups of people were running at the stairs and hallways slamming doors and conducting they loud discussions till 2 am and started again at 5 am...

Rooms: We had an economy room which was pityfully cheaply surface renovated. Closet and room doors closed only with force. Room was good size though. TV was oddly positioned and the choise of channels was very limited. There is a safe, but no minibar nor coffee or tea making possibility.

Beds: Mattresses were terribly soft. If you don't have back problems you will get them in these beds. We mentioned this at the reception after the first night and were told they have new mattresses and could change them. We noticed no change (not even sure they were changed...) so after three nights we complained again with the result that wooden boards were put between the mattress and the box spring (which hotel has those readily available??) Helped with the box spring but it didn't prevent the mattress from sagging though...

Cleanliness: Should probably have taken a picture of what we encountered in the toilet as we arrived but instead I decided to flush it down quickly. Bathroom was not always cleaned, toiletries were replaced a bit randomly (once two tubes of body cream but no soap), towels were changed every day and sheets every two days and you have no choice should you not wish that.

Non-smoking hotel, which meant that people smoked on the terraces or balcony, but as ash trays were not provided the terraces and the grounds were full of cigaret-stumps which were not cleaned away.

Free large parking for hotel and restaurant guests. Very busy though. We always found a spot but it may at times be a distance away.

Staff: Reception staff was always very friendly. Restaurant staff too. Service was not that great though.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast with cereals, bread, lunchmeats, cheese, fruit, bacon and eggs. Selection got worse every day. On Easter sunday you had to wait 45 minutes for the eggs... which ended up being green to no surprise.

Restaurant: We have been to this restaurant before too and it has always been equally dissappointing. The same boring Menu for aleady a couple of years. Only one seasonal variety, which is every day the same. Food really average if not below. Not that cheap though. An essential part of the dessert was missing. The friendliness of the service was this time better.

Dogs allowed in rooms and restaurants at a cost of €10/day.

Hallways stink. To go to your room you either have to go through the restaurant or many stairs, some very narrow and nothing for older folks or a lot of baggage.

No free WIFI.

In my view the most important service a hotel should provide is a good night's sleep. Witte Bergen did not manage to provide that.
