“Just average food but nice view and atmosphere ..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2014

We went in from recommendations from our hotel and when we walked in it looked beautiful. The settings and the view were perfect. We proceeded to order a bottle of 2009 Brunello that was very good. We then got a basket of treats and breads that were nice. We proceeded to get the appetizer Lardo wrapped around grain..the Lardo was ok and the plate overall underwhelming. The nex dish of gnochhi with creme sauce and truffles was just ok..I felt it was Luke warm, mushy and lacked flavor. The rabbit was overlooked and didn't present well. The pork, was fatty and overlooked , plus cooked in the same bland sauce as the gnocchi. The caffe was nice and the lavender semifreddo was good. Overall is was a fair/good meal..it would have been lower if it weren't for the nice service and the dolce/treats.

“Retro classic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2014

We ate here 7 years ago and this return visit was just as wonderful. Professional service, great food and superb setting. Fresh porcini salad with pecorino, guinea fowl terrine, tagliata and truffled gnocchi all served at a gentle pace and exact flavours. Finished off with a selection of sorbet. A meal to reminisce upon.

“Great full 4 courses dinner!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

We had a really good dinner at this place, the service a little slow, but still very good. We asked for a full 4 courses dinner and it was worth it. Get there a little bit earlier so you can see the view from the lobby of the hotel, it's really unique.

“One of the best restaurants in Tuscany”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

First of all, this review is for the restaurant of the hotel Il Giglio. I'll review the hotel separately.

I've been eating at Il Giglio since they first opened the restaurant in the mid/late 1990s, and I've never eaten anything less than exceptional food. The menu changes according to the season and what is locally available and appropriate. Anna Machetti runs the kitchen here (she and husband Mario own the restaurant and the associated hotel) and her pedigree stretches back decades: she is the former cook at the Cucina di Edgardo, which was located a hundred feet down the street, and was considered by many to be one of the best places to eat in all of Italy. The menu is built around traditional Montalcinese and Sienese/Tuscan ideas, but with just enough creative elegance to set each and every dish a unique interpretation. If you've been to Tuscany, you will understand that, with some exceptions, the Tuscan standards don't vary much from one restaurant to another (ok, yeah, some are far better than average, and some are below, but the basic approach rarely varies). Anna manages to add just the right twists and touches to set her plates apart from all the rest.

I've had some amazing dishes here: fresh/raw porcini salad, pancetta al forno, baccalà mantecato, hand-made pastas of every description including the local pici, stuffed tortelli and variants, tagliatelle, and more, all made in the downstairs kitchen. Stunning.

The restaurant is small, so if you plan to have dinner there, it's a good idea to reserve, and remember, they are only open for dinner. Service provided by Mario and son Michele is impeccable. Need advice on wine? Mario and Michelle can answer any questions you might have, especially regarding the local Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino—their cellar is legendary, so this is a place to splurge a bit on some great wines.

I could go on, but here's the bottom line: If you are in Montalcino and don't eat at Il Giglio, you are missing a tremendous opportunity to experience Tuscan cuisine at it's best. It's that simple.
