“Budget with atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2008

This eatery "of other times" is about 150 metres outside the town's main square, going southwards down the slope past the much more upmarket Re di Macchia. It is run by a lady who's apparently the daughter of Guido Padelletti, one of Montalcino's wine producers (they'll give you a nice leaflet about the Padelettis). The house wine was inexpensive and nice.
Her son was working there too, and they sat down and had a quick bite of grub in a table across from ours whilst things were quiet.
The menu includes organic foods, and there is a very reasonable choice. Claudia offered us fresh spinach or french beans as additional vegetables - very nice, since things green are not often seen in Italy.
Our food came to us gently, and in the course of time. Not a place for those that love drive-in or fast stuff. It was very tasty, enough of it, and good value. The fizzy water is just unfizzy water into which they inject CO2, but at least they do it in front of you!!
It's just a little local place where you can eat at ease and feel part of the scene - but NOT the place to go and be seen. If it's warm you can sit on the little shady area just outside the door, but your only view is down a steep alleyway.
