“A great place to stay even in late autumn...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2012

We spend only one night in Porta Castellana which was the last day of our vacation in Italy. The room was great, that we felt the energy of the stone walls..It's very comfortable and cozy. Even it was very cold outside in October, the room was very warm. The breakfast was served to our room with great smell of coffee. The location was great that's very close to the center. The landlady was so nice and helpfull..

We stayed at Porta Castallana for 4 nights in September 2011. It is beyond charming. Annalisa, our host, was the best B&B host we've ever experienced. She was helpful, generous and took care of our every need. This 3 room B&B is picture perfect from the outside, and our room was delightful. The bathroom was small but adequate (we found most bathrooms small during our 2 week stay in Italy), everything was very clean and well attended to. There is no common sitting room-living room which most B&B's have but we didn't mind. The breakfast, served on the gazebo overlooking a lovely view, was on the sweet side, mostly sweet biscuits-cookie like pastries, but there was fresh fruit and coffee. The only caution we would mention is that Porta Castallana is at the bottom of the sloping town of Montalcino and so it is 99 steps up, if you're walking, to the main part of town where the restaurants and shops are located. Not for the disabled or very elderly, but was fine for us. We viewed it as our exercise before indulging in wonderful food and wine!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Porta Castellana. Pros: great breakfast, exceptional value, very welcoming host, comfortable rooms and beds & is located in beautiful Montalcino. Cons: difficult to find & dim lighting in bathroom for makeup application.

I would have no problem recommending this property.

Although only a one bed, with ensuite, this B&B was very nice. It is situated in a very quiet part of town and at the bottom of a very steep street. The owner was extremely pleasant and spoke great english.Breakfast was served in the garden. There was fresh fruit plus the normal contintenal food. You can have breakfast in your room. Clean linen and the room is serviced each day.

Room Tip: Cosy room with chairs and writing table.Nice shower and toilet.Stone tile floor.

We stayed here while on our honeymoon for 4 nights (June 28-July 1). Our room was wonderful. Very romantic and nice and cool. It is located right within the town so you can easily walk everywhere. Our hostess Dida was a treasure. She was so helpful in organizing some last minute winery visits for us (we do not speak Italian so this was great) and made some great restaurant recommendations (we really liked "il Grappo Blu", we went there twice for amazingly fresh and local comfort food). We even joined Dida and her friends one night on the patio for some drinks and dessert (where we were also treated to an opera performance by her good friend). We will definitely stay here again. Dida, you are the best! xoxo Erin & David

We stayed at Porta Castellana in May and had a wonderful time. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The patio was a great place to sit in the evenings and enjoy a glass of wine. Annalisa was extremely friendly and helpful in providing us with great recommendations for restaurants and wineries to visit. We hope to go back again sometime soon!

This stay was absolutely beyond our expectations! On the Internet, we had seen that the place looked great, but we couldn't have imagined that the wonderful hostess would make us feel like her frends and the place like our home! By the way, the earlier mentioned stairs leading up to the centre were great fun and provided some well needed exercise (lots of good food and wine in Italy), a bit scary going down though-;)
We loved everything about the B&B and Montalcino and would love to come back!
