“good location, great people, no A/C”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2011

the family running this hotel are the best. they really care about what you go and see and how to help you arrange your day. speak great English. free wifi. just a few negatives if you must call them that. no A/C - thats fine, but it was hot when I was there, and if there was just a ceiling fan in the room it would of helped. breakfast was just OK, but good coffee. did not get to eat the pizza while there. and of course the typical hard beds, flat pillows and tiny shower stalls. small rooms, nice size bathroom. I did have a beautiful lake view room with Bellagio across the lake. walking distance to 2 ferry connections and Villa Carlotta. Not a bad choice for a day or 2.

The family that runs this hotel is really nice. The "dad" is sometimes a bit too helpful, but mostly that was ok.

I think the family would fun an incredible hotel, but they don't have the best situation to work with. The view IS amazing. But the sunrise comes DIRECTLY into the rooms and makes them very hot. You can't open the window because the hotel is directly on the road - and it's very busy from 7 am until very late. The rooms are also miniscule (by any standard) - we didn't have enough room for our luggage. The room smelled (room 4) - it wasn't the bathroom; it was definitely the room.

The free wifi was good and the breakfast was good.

Everything was great except the room!

We had one night in this hotel and, to be brutally honest, one night was all we needed. It's not a terrible hotel, and the price didn't make us expect too much from it, but it is in need of some refurbishment. The staff were friendly enough, but the one thing where the hotel stood out was the view from our room (see picture). The hotel is located squarely on the lake, right on top of the car ferry terminal, and while Griante had little to offer for tourists in terms of restaurants and entertainment we had the most amazing view from our balcony - right over the lake.

One night was enough for us, and I'm not sure that a longer stay would have been as easily offset by that view. I'd advise finding some local wine and spend the evening drinking it while staring at the scenery.

I stayed here while doing some cycling around the como area . It has the million dollar views across the lake to bellagio without the price tag . Location was perfect for us as we rode or caught ferries to some fantastic riding . On the rest day the manager gave us some great ideas to visit the local sites on scooter . Would definitely go back .

We showed up and checked in, and took the elevator up to our room. The place is poorly lit, smells like my grandmother's house after she stopped opening windows for fresh air, and everything about the hotel was dated and looked to be c. mid-80's. Including the mattress. The bed was totally unusable, was minimally 30 years old and had many coils pushing up from both twin mattresses. For 90 euro, I expected better. I didn't expect even a 2 star hotel, but I had hoped for a room tat would have a bed which is more comfortable than sleeping on the floor. We politely asked for a different room, explaining that the mattresses' condition was unsuitable, and the lady from the desk said they are all the same in the hotel, all old, and she had no other rooms anyway. We discussed it privately and agreed that we just couldn't stay, and informed the reception that we could not use the room due to its condition. She went on a rampage, barking at me that it is my problem, no one else complained about the condition, and i have to pay anyway. I asked her if she had ever examined that bed, she responded that she doesn't live in the hotel so its not her problem. I asked her to check the bed and she said no. She said i should have come earlier to check in then she could have put me in a different room (even though, she said they were all the same when we asked prior for a different room).

Honestly, I've never been so rudely treated by a hotel staff. There are cheap, respectable hotel chains in Europe (Ibis, Etap) which provide better accommodation for less money (like, by half). This woman was arrogant, rude, and completely unprofessional, and has no business working in hotel/tourism/hospitality. Not a single apology for having an old mattress, not a smidgen of shame for putting a guest paying 90Euro/night on a mattress nearly as old as she was.

If you don't like sleeping on coils digging into your back, then it is YOUR problem. Just, be advised. US standards don't apply here, not by any small measure. They won't investigate your complaint, because it's not their problem. It is your problem. And you will have to pay for this treatment and the privilege of staying in this hovel. There was a youth hostel in the next town over, and I'm wiling to bet they had better beds to sleep on.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same (all with 30yo beds). So good luck finding the

Pro's:
Good Value
Friendly (maybe a bit too friendly!) staff
Free Wifi
Good view if room is lake facing
Larger room for Europe
Good location for ferry to other parts of the Lake
Negs:
A bit noisy (there is only one road in and one road out so not much the hotel can do except double glaze)
Small shower (but this was all through Italy)

So the positives outweigh the negatives. This was our first visit to Italy and Lake Como. Lake Como was stunning and one of the highlights of our trip. Would I go back to Hotel Riviera?tbh I would probably try for a hotel across the lake.

We were only here for one night, so we got the smallest room. That was OK. Room was clean but crowded. The staff was very helpful. We had lunch, dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. The food was very good. There is no a/c but the windows opened and we enjoyed the fresh air and view of the lake. Very near the boat dock and several other restaurants close by. Would stay here again and ask for a larger room.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the bigger rooms.
