When I looked at the pictures of this hotel, it looked amazing, and the location was right on Lake Como. Or so I thought.
What was not obvious in the picture was the heavy traffic on the two lane road that separated this hotel from the lake. Strolling around the front of the hotel while cars, trucks and motorcycles zoomed by, just inches from the walkways was not the experience that I had in mind when I booked what I thought would be a peaceful vacation spot. In fact, Cadenabbia is not even a town, just a way point, without much to walk to.
The hotel lobby was spectacular, and the restaurant was magnificent, though for dinner, it was prix fixe and pricy. We ate the complimentary breakfast there.
The room, however, was small and there was a spider hanging over one of the beds above the pillow, and another in the shower to greet us. The blankets were old and worn, with a few holes, and I didn't even want to touch them. The room lacked any sense of style or decor. Part of the terazzo floor was crumbled near the corner of the room.
The terrace had a nice view, although it was not exactly private - it was really one large terrace shared by several rooms, and separated by a small planter between each room, which a person could easily walk around.
I had the sense that this hotel must have, at one time, been quite grand, and that it had been neglected for a while. It is now undergoing restoration, as evidenced by the large crane behind the hotel, with parts of the corridors being renovated.
After two days, we left early and moved to a different hotel in a quaint and quiet little town on Lake Como.
