We chose this hotel through a voucher deal and I guess you pay for what you get! Although, i guess wewould have been happier if we actually got what we paid for!! We booked this place for a quiet girly weekend away. When we arrived at the hotel, the reception looks very grand, and welcoming, that was where it stopped really. We went to check in, the lady at reception said great news, We had been upgraded to a beautiful big family room, she said that she would send a bottle of bubbles up to the room for any inconvenience caused (a bit strange even though it is all inclusive!). They made out like they were doing us a favour! We weren’t expecting anything more than a 3 star, but we at least wanted our own rooms which we paid for!
We didn’t want the one room as we wanted to 2 separate bathrooms, but we said we would have a look at the ‘family’ room anyway. We got to the room decided it was too small for 4 women to get ready, change, shower, and use the bathroom so we wanted to stick to what we have paid for. So I called down to reception and lady at reception informed me that someone has come out of hospital and they needed our room?????? Basically I think that they over booked and tried to fob us off with one room for the duration of our stay! We had to stay in that room for the first night and got told to come back to reception in the morning and they would ‘see what they could do’. We went to reception and again they tried to say they didn’t have any rooms available?! It was only until we mentioned we wanted a refund, as we have paid for 2 rooms and have only been given one, did they miraculously find us 2 separate rooms. I felt like we had wasted a day of our holiday trying to sort this out! Not really fair when we are only there for 3 nights! I am sure they wouldn’t offer this solution to the older hotel guests either!
Once we had moved rooms we could relax a bit. We did noticed that the clientele were considerably older than us. Most people seemed to be regular, yearly visitors to the hotel. We almost felt like the odd ones out! People seem very set in their ways, i.e you couldn’t possibly sit at someone else’s regular table that they sit at every night! We didn’t exactly feel very welcome at certain times….
In terms of the hotel bar, it is very dated and reminded us of some something you would get in a sleepy retirement, seaside town. Never the less we did try and make the most of it and we were singing along to the evening’s entertainment, someone on a keyboard, playing old 70’s classics....
The food isn’t as bad as some of the previous reviews mentioned, they have fresh homemade pasta / pizza everyday which was good. The waiting staff were lovely, really friendly and were happy to give us tips on where to go and what to do. So that was a plus point!
But, another let down was the electricity in the room, the fuse kept going. Not what you want when you are in the shower and the lights and air conditioning go off! I had to call reception around 6 / 7 times in one evening as the power kept going off and they had to keep coming up to our floor to restore power to their main fuse box. In the end went we want to bed, the electricity had gone off again, But I didn’t want to ask reception AGAIN to come up and sort it out as I felt like I was pestering them and they seem annoyed every time I called, so we slept without any aircon! They said the rooms had low voltage but no one else on the floor seemed to be effected!?
We also had mystery calls in the night. Someone kept trying to call the phone then hanging up! This continued on and off until about 1am! In the end we left the phone off the hook.
Maybe we were unlucky to have such a bad experience from start to finish of our trip. But all in all, I don’t think I would stay here again.. There are so many other accommodation options in the area, at the same price or cheaper, although it does have an ok location (close to the ferry port) I wouldn’t choose this hotel based on that!... I understand that this place is a 3 star, and we werent expecting anything more, but at the very least, if i book 2 rooms, i expect 2 rooms and both to have working electricity! I don’t think hotel really minds that we won’t be returning as they seems to have their repeat business from their regular, older clientele anyway! It is a hotel which seems to be stuck in a time warp and I don’t see it changing any time soon. I will come back to Lake Como as it is beautiful... but neither my friends nor myself would ever stay at this hotel again.
Oh and we are still waiting for that complimentary bottle of bubbly that was promised to us at the start of the stay!
