“Great location. Hotel not too great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013 via mobile

lovely room, can only compare to grovsner hotel(television hotel on chanel 4), ants in room, breakfast large selection but all very bland. orange juice tasted like sour cordial. Lift very slow, Internet
connection poor, and I just think the hotel takes on far too much a coach load of guests arrived the day after us and I don't think the hotel could keep up with it. The pool is located off sight which is inconvenient I suppose but still get to have a lovely view over the lake. No one metioned swimming caps for the pool so we had to spend €6 on buying them! So being your own! Boats to other places are about €9 each way. Great for a relaxing break. But not particularly a relaxing hotel. Noisey guests

Food is in a filthy atmosphere with little or no taste. Reservations are not honored the way they are made. Staff does nothing special to make up for the inconveinance. Wifi not available at all times. Rooms and air conditioning are okay. Pool is off property so handicapped people are not recommended to go here. picture of this place is very misleading! Food quality is better in a smorgasbord low cost restaurant then here!

Room Tip: do not go here

Just returned from a very enjoyable holiday with my daughter with Shearings.
What wonderful views of the lake especially from the hotels roof terrace.
The room was very clean and adequate for our needs but must admit the shower cubical was small. We had a room at the side but we were able to see some of the lake.
Food was self service, good and plentiful and no problems getting our food. The staff were helpful and always asked if they could take our plates when we had finished.
Packed lunches were more than enough for what we needed especially as we had had a good breakfast.
The lido was excellent for relaxing by a pool and I do agree with previous reviewers that the all inclusive drinks here were not brilliant but we only wanted water so it was fine by us. Drinks at the hotel were fine however.
Contrary to other reviews Shearings holidays are not just for 'old' people as my daughter is only 24 and she loved the holiday. There were also others younger than her on the coach.
Karen and Bill were excellent drivers thank you!
I am looking to return with my husband later in the year.

Just got back from spending a week at this hotel and we enjoyed our stay. The food was plentyful and staff were very polite we mostly helped ourselves to refills of water the wine in my opinion was not very good so didn't bother we bought a few bottles from the supermarket and took it to the dining room with us you could go down to the bar for drinks but it was down stairs so not ideal for evening meal drinks. We had a lake view with a balcony and would recomend this as the views are amazing, not much happening in and around this hotel we didn't mind we meet lots of lovely people. The free water taxi will take you over to bilagio and the bus stop a noddy train are right outside the hotel very handy for getting around.

Have just returned from an enjoyable stay at the Britannia, I have to say reading through some of the previous reviews we were more than a bit worried as to what we were letting ourselves in for so we were pleasantly surprised.
We travelled with Thomson Crystal, I must say the Crystal Rep Janine is excellent.
We were given a room at the back of the Hotel, I did ask if we could have a Lake facing room but as it was peak season they had no space, they said to enquire the following day, our room however at the back was quiet with a village -mountain view was very pleasant.
I think the rooms vary considerably, some have ceiling fans, bidets and some do not.
Our room was very adequate, the shower was incredibly small, we are not large people and we struggled a bit, we had a Juliet balcony.
Although our room was s not luxurious in any way it was very clean and pleasant with a good fridge.
The food I have to say we were very surprised, from previous reviews many said that there was no choice and the food was poor, I have to disagree with this, you have to remember you are after all in a three star Hotel in Italy, one of the most expensive places in Europe.
The food they served was overall very good, there was fish on the Menu every day, including sword fish and red snapper, how many three star Hotels have that on the menu? when most four star Hotels do not.
There is always something good to eat, you have to put a bit of thought into it sometimes, the Hotel caters for a lot of nationality's and I think they cater well.
The wine served at lunch and evening meal is very drinkable, there is even Precceco served, the waiters serve the wine in two different sized jugs.
Contrary to some reviews, the restaurant is not like a canteen, it is very busy Hotel with one large dining room, and yes it does get busy, but its well run by very efficient and pleasant staff who work extremely hard.
The Hotel also has a lovely boat which runs over to Bellagio, which is a great little trip.
The new addition to the Hotel that is now completed but waiting for the paperwork to go through is the floating pool, we were told it would finished in April when we booked but sadly it was not, it looks lovely and will be a great addition.
We used the Lido, it opens at 9 o clock in the morning and is beautiful it is open to the public as well so its busy, it is very well kept with good sun loungers and amazing views, you have to rent towels 5euro per week not refundable.
The only downside to the Lido has to be the staff, the old guy that serves the drinks there is a miserable rude man, because it has a limited number of all inclusive drinks there for clients of the Hotel and also serves drinks which have to be purchased by everyone else, he seems to only be friendly to the people that are handing over there euros, I think someone needs to explain to him that we paid upfront its not a freebie for us!
All things considered we had a lovely time, the location is superb and easily accessible by local bus and ferry, the organised trips we took were good as it is a very beautiful area.

Any one who has been to Italy before will know how expensive eating and drinking out can be, this Hotel makes it affordable and is extremely good value for money, I could not imagine how much money we would have spent if we had not booked this all inclusive Hotel.

Location:
It was a good base for visiting the towns on the central part of the lake. It took an hour to get to Como itself from the hotel, but you have lovely views of the Lake where the hotel is situated! The ferry port is down the road so is very convenient for that.
Hotel:
Our room was adequately furnished + fridge and safe which was useful. Clean and with air conditioning. Beds basic, quite narrow but ok. We were lucky to have a room with a lake view with a terrace that was shared with 5 other rooms. Hotel was well decorated with lovely marble in the main hotel areas, very ornate and Italian! 2 computers with access to Wifi. Relaxed atmosphere. Staff in reception helpful, not overly friendly. The waitors were attentive and friendly. As it was a self service buffet it could get quite busy but this wasn't a major problem. There was a good choice of food, and lots of it! Lack of entertainment in the evening was a downside. Downstairs bar lacked atmosphere but was nice and cool. As we had an all inclusive package we had packed lunches, which were pretty basic.

Room Tip: If you don't have a lake view room you can sit on the terrace above the bar.

I stayed here at the end of June 2013.

The hotel is billed as 3 star, exactly what it is. The rooms are adequate, I wouldn't say anymore than that. It is a busy hotel, the staff do their best to accommodate customers.

The food is plentiful, if a little repetitive. I can't understand someone reviewing the food and saying that their salad arrived too late for their meal. The meals are self service from a buffet, so if this happened, then it could only have been their own fault!!

The bar is in the basement and is frequented by the same crowd each night, who like to avail themselves of the free bar to all inclusive guests. If you like, you can take your drink upstairs to the terrace, which is very pleasant, with views across the Lake to Bellagio, which is beautiful.

This hotel is great because of it's situation, which is convenient for travel on Lake Como as the ferry terminal is only about a hundred yards away. For drivers there is plenty of parking, and the roads to the north are good. If you have your own transport, Lugano isnt far away, and St Moritz can be reached by train via the Bernina line. The Valtellina isn't far either, if you like to eat like a local there are lovely cheeses, meats like Bresaola, and local wines to be sampled. Plenty of lovely Lombard specialities to be found! Get away from the hotel and try it-there's more to this place than just the hotel!!

Room Tip: Any of those facing the lake have fantastic views
