We have just returned from a 9 day holiday with Shearings, staying at this hotel. We have been on numerous coach holidays with them and we expected this hotel, to be of the same standard, as the others. I had read the reviews prior to booking this holiday, but like to keep an open mind, however on this occassion, I have to agree, with many of the bad reviews. We arrived at the same time as two other German coach parties and I have never been pushed and elbowed so much when trying to book in. Do not upgrade your room, prior to your holiday. We were offered an upgrade at reception and decided to accept at 50 euros. This was a quarter of the price quoted by Shearings. There are also three lifts. Do not take the first small lift, but walk a little further and there are another two on the left hand side, which are larger and quicker. Our room was lovely and clean and had a balcony and lake view. There was plenty of storage, but lacked tea and coffee facilities, which I feel were paramount, as I will explain later. The meals were buffet style, where you helped yourself and on the whole were very good quality. The problem at meal times was more to do with the amount of people, trying to access the food stations. Breakfast was served between 7.30 and 10.00, lunch between 12.00 to 2.00 and dinner between 6.30 to 9.00. We tried at different times, but no matter when you dined, the amount of people, who knocked into you without apologising and the noise was horrendous, which I hate to say, was mainly due to the other nationalities, who had reserved tables. It was embarrasing to see and experience. On the three evenings out of the five, there were no unreserved tables available and dirty crockery and plates piled high. The staff did work hard to clear the tables quickly, but were often out numbered by the demand. I also consider myself to be an outgoing friendly person, but except for a handful of staff, it was impossible to extract a smile from most. Tea, coffee and all alcholic drinks except wine, had to be obtained in the bar in the basement. This meant that following your meal or anytime during the day or evening, this was the only way you could have a hot drink. As the hotel was hugh and we were situated on the sixth floor and I need to use a walking stick, I frequently did without, as the trek was too much hassle. Following dinner, considering the dining room must have taken around 350 - 400 people, the bar below was considerably smaller. Three evenings, we were unable to find a seat there or anywhere else in the hotel and retreated to our room, to watch TV!!. Unfortunately, even though this was a satallite TV, we could not get a signal and were tucked up in bed by 9.30 pm !! I did phone down to reception, but nothing was done about it. We have always considered the dining aspect of a holiday, to be a major point. Sitting and relaxing, whilst making conversation with other travellers and being waited on, is one of best bits (possibly even more so for us ladies), but I unfortunately began to dread experience. We also seem to have acquired sore throats and coughs, which may be entirely due to the cold weather, but on more than one occassion the crockery and glasses, were not completely clean and I do wonder. This holiday was a completely different and not necessarily pleasant experience, so much so, that we shall be travelling solo next year and staying in quaint bed and breakfasts!
