“Do not miss this attraction if you are in the Lake Como area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

Because we had to curtail our trip to Lake Como we had to decide between the Villa Balbianello and the Villa Carlotta and we chose the former, and I'm glad we did. The Villa Carlotta was right next to our hotel in Tremezzo but because it was such a nice day we decided to walk to Lenno along the Greenway Del Lago which takes you up into the hills behind the lake. Although some parts were a bit steep it was worth it for the views. The pathway is well signposted and it took us about 1 1/2 hours with a few rest stops. Lenno itself is a lovely little place round a sheltered bay in the Lake. Because we went on a Saturday we could walk on up to the Villa which took about another 25 minutes. I think pedestrian access is only available on specific days otherwise you have to get a boat from the harbour in Lenno. What a fantastic location. Lovely gardens and great views up and down the lake. We only did the tour of the gardens and they were lovely. Walked back down and bought a gelato and sat along the harbour to enjoy it and the view before getting the ferry back to Tremezzo.

“Make sure you take the boat”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

We tried to visit this villa but found all access to pedestrians blocked, including the greenway trail. There was no warning that pedestrian access was prohibited.

“The unmissable Villa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

We visited this beautiful Villa in 2010 and made a bee-line for it again this year. In 2010 we walked to it from our hotel in Lenno but this time we arrived by boat and the approach is breathtaking. It is in a perfect location and there are stunning views everywhere you turn in the garden.

You can jusy visit the garden but do not miss the tour of the house to hear its history and the story of the man who gave it to the nation. The views from the interior are to die for and the decor and story behind each room unmissable.

If you are a Brit, take your National Trust card for a discount. The paths are excellent but the slopes are steep and we saw a few people struggling.

“A very interesting place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

My husband and I reluctantly joined the tour to have something to do on a rainy day. We thought we would see some antique furniture etc. Instead we had a fascinating tour and learnt a lot about a very interesting person, his collections and a villa with an intriguing history. What a lovely surprise! The tour was well worth the time and price. The gardens and the views are stunning as well. It is worth taking the ferry to get a view of the villa from the water, have your camera ready. You do have to check the days the villa is open.

“Wonderful but small garden, amazing views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

As others have said, check the day and access: we were able to walk in from Lenno on Sunday. It doesn't take long to look around the formal part of the garden, restored to the old Italian style, but it is well worth the visit; at every turn there were amazing vistas and photo opportunities. We also took the tour of the Villa, and you miss a lot if you do not do this. The guide spoke English very well and explained the ownership history - essential to make sense of the current Villa. It is an Italian 'Hearst Castle', renovated in the mid-70s with an eclectic mix of gorgeous old French pieces, explorer memorabilia and 'modern' improvements to make the Villa a comfortable home.
