“Idyllic location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2011

A nice place to stay if you want rest and relaxation. Antique Moorish furniture is fascinating. Breakfast is limited--mostly packaged crackers and jams. It is at least 10 minutes by car to Amalfi and there is NO parking! The hotel shuttle has very poor hours--nothing in the afternoon, and last pick up at 8 pm. Guests are almost forced to go into Amalfi to eat since the hotel restaurant is limited, expensive, and empty--not the best atmosphere, and the 2 restaurants within walking distance think cuttlefish is normal fare. We loved the view but hated the hairpin curves and wild Italian drivers; we were never eager to venture out. On the whole our least favorite spot in Italy.

My wife and I stayed at the II Saraceno for one night in September 2010; we originally booked two nights but some of our friends who saw adverse remarks made by some your reviewers advised us not to stay so we cut the stay to only one night; what a mistake we should have stayed a week
The location is perfect if you wish to explore the Amalfi coast and as we had a car we should have made Saraceno our base.
Your reviewers seem to want everything under the sun for no cost for although the hotel may seem outdated it has incredible charm; is spacious, the prices are reasonable and the food incredible.
Now to place things in perspective we stayed at very expensive hotels on our stay and yes there were finer things at these hotels but we were also paying about 140% more for a smaller space.
On our stay we were first upgraded to a larger room which had a fantastic ocean view at no extra charge, They graciously kept our car and extra baggage for us while we went to Capri for several days.....and at no extra charge to us! Very friendly and personable service and definitely our home base on our next visit to the Amalfi coast.

Just terrible. the only good thing about this hotel was the views and free parking. They even charge you to use the internet??? who does that now a days. No 5 star amenities, no slippers, no robes, we had to ask for extra towels, plastic cups instead of real glasses. the safe was inside the refrigerator with a key. and the TV they must of found it in a museum, it was small and old. I would not recommend this hotel.

we arrived and found the hotel very easily, although it is a half hour walk to the city center, you are better off that way when visiting amalfi. A great location to go for a day trip to ravello as well. Great room, we had an ocean view which was incredible. Breakfast was nice, service always kind. Hotel has great character and the private beach was wonderful! Can't complain.

We were in Amalfi just three weeks ago. I have always dreamed of seeing the Amalfi coast. Our choice of hotels was most disappointing. We found the staff to be only fair in their attention. The entire hotel needs a serious updating. All of the room from the pictures, dressers, chairs, mattresses and linens are tired and need replacing. The room was inadequately cooled by the wall AC units. We also had ants in our room. The elevators lack the ability to stop closing when they are held by a hand or arm, very dangerous if you have kids. The elevator and walkway to the pool are dark and dirty. There were no towels nor service for the pool area, nor a phone to call for help. I would not recommend this hotel.

After a number of visits to the Amalfi coast, we decided that this would be the perfect place to get married. Our wedding in Ravello wa truely "Magical", however after our 2 night stay in the wonderful Hotel Villa Fraulo, we went to the Grand Saraceno. Although the hotel was hugely historical, very good location & great "Quirkiness", we did not feel very special in any way.
The staff were well aware that we had just got married, however not one member of staff congratulated us, no flowers or champagne, not even a card! A few of the staff were really courteous and rather friendly however we felt that on the whole the experience was flat.

The rooms are in huge need of updating, the TV was ancient, the toilet seat was broken as was the Jacuzzi bath. However the views were amazing. We booked a "Superior" room, I would like to have seen what a standard room looked like! This is meant to be a 5 star hotel, our parents were in a down the road in a cheaper hotel, however the staff gave us more attention when we visited them than we got at ours!

We travel the world with our work staying in 4 & 5 Star hotels, so we are rather experienced in receiving excellent customer service, unfortunatley we did not see any of this at the "Grand" Saraceno.
Speaking to a number of locals, they are aware that this hotel has lost it's magic
A Great Pity

I had very much been looking forward to staying at this hotel as I first spotted it about 7 years ago in a brochure and have been charmed by the location and style ever since. Il Saraceno was the last hotel that my partner and I stayed in at the end of an 11 night tour of the coast travellling through Naples, Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi. It was the only '5 star' hotel that we had booked and we paid for an upgrade from the basic room so that we would have something very special to look forward to at the end of our trip.
I am sorry to say that this hotel is far from 5 star standard. The antique furniture in our room and around the hotel was simply old and uncared for - I had a huge urge to grab some bees wax and start polishing. All the furnishings were old and that off pink that just looks like faded red, the table cloths had holes in them. The television was ancient and tiny (not a priority for me but indicative of the hotel); the bathroom was okay but there was no overhead shower so that you had to sit in the bath to take a shower; the lifts are goods lifts and pretty frightening as they judder to a stand still. The staff were, frankly, a little dusty themselves, and strangely, all male. We didn't see a single female member of staff over the 3 nights that we stayed at the hotel. The nicest, and I say this reservedly, member of staff was the driver who took us to Amalfi in the mornings and collected us early evening.
The breakfasts were terrible. The sort that one might expect in a Travelodge in the 1970's. Whereas in the other 3 hotels we stayed at we were offered Parma ham, fresh cheeses, fresh fruit etc, this had some ghastly food coloured ham that Jamie Oliver would campaign to take out of school dinners! And the coffee tased like it had been made a week ago! My partner said it was not only the worst coffee he had had since we had been in Italy, but the worst in a good many years in England! On the second morning, he refused to go to breakfast and instead we went to Amalfi and ate at a lovely coffee place called Andrea Pansa.
Now, I am really not terribly fussy but I was so very disappointed with this place. It really did feel like a rich boy's pet project in the late 60's (I say boy due to the rusting armoury everywhere) that has been abandoned to decay (along with the original staff!). I do hope that this hotel gets taken into new management and turned around. The location is superb and this could be a very special place indeed.
If you are visitng the area, I do recommend staying in Positano though - we had a wonderful stay at the Palazzo Murat (a 4 star which surpassed Il Saraceno in every way!).
