Our incredible trip to the Amalfi coast had only one HUGE disappointment - this B&B. We arrived on the day of our 10th anniversary from Rome - this was to be our special 2 night treat - a room with a view in Atrani, an affordable option to Amalfi or Positano. The description on the website clearly describes the rooms having sea views. We called the mobile # given to us for the proprietors to meet us on the coastal road 86 steps below where the bus dropped us off. After the 2nd 'not in service' message, we walked over to a nearby florist who kindly pointed us to the direction of the cathedral at the top of the steps. We knocked on several doors in the maze of identical apartments above before finding the Room With A View sticker beside a row of buzzers.
Our young hostess, Frances led us to a small room with a tiny window facing a hall shared by other guests. An adjacent window from our bathroom also faced the hallway. When both windows are shut, the room is a veritable tomb. When we asked where the view was, she led us a few steps up to a balcony, where she explained breakfast will be served and we had access to at any time. She took a passport for check-in and when we asked her if they accept credit cards, she said that being a small business, they did not. After taking a few minutes to digest that we have been completely conned, we decided it was unacceptable and we would stay one night and find another room with a view for the second night. Her boyfriend, Bruno, whose family owned the building, responded, "It is against the law to back out, you have already committed to the room." I explained that it was our 10th wedding anniversary and we were looking forward to our room with a view as described on the website. He repeated Frances' explanation of the shared balcony. We walked away, disgusted and went to the beach for a drink.
We spend a delightful couple of hours with Andrew, owner of Nettuno, a small bar at the beach tucked under the bridge connecting Atrani to Amalfi. He was appalled enough to tell nearby friends, who like himself, were born and raised in Atrani. He said he would have given us a room with a view in his house as well as cook for us.
On our way to our anniversary dinner, we ran into Bruno and Frances, who told us they had a surprise for us in our room when we returned. After our superb dinner at Luisella, at a patio table thoughtfully reserved by Andrew, we returned to our room with a bottle of champagne chilling on ice. But, alas, we had drank enough in our otherwise memorable evening, and didn't need the champagne for the view.
Some POSITIVE comments about Atrani:
- quiet break from tourist inundated Amalfi
- incredible views from the Cathedral steps
- close to Ravello - a must do, different from the rest of the coast, musical concerts available during the summer
- monthly celebrations of patron saints - we witnessed procession of St. Anthony statue being carried from Amalfi to Atrani to the boat going to sea and a funny little man, in charge of fireworks - which set off with his cigarrettes
- watching football at town piazza with the locals

Our great summer, filled with nice people and happy customers from all over the world, had only one HUGE disappointment, this couple from Vancouver Canada. They obviously missdialled our number, since we didn't get a call, or a missed-call alert. Missdialling is a very common mistake when in a foreign country, but they chose to blame us and didn't even reply to our greetings when they got to our place.

All we said after that is that at the bottom of every email we send, we clearly state that we do not take credit cards. And we explained that they could have left with a cancellation fee
if they didn't take the room and check in. That means without using the room for half an hour and then wanting to leave.
Nevertheless, since we realized it was their anniversary (they hadn't told us that before), we put a champagne bottle in their room, too bad for them they couldn't go 6 steps from their door, on the terrace with seaview that all rooms share, they would have had the romantic evening they were so looking for, and they would have been much happier!
