Recently returned from avra beech which we enjoyed however on our last day tragically a man collapsed and died whilst playing volley ball.I found it astonishing that there was no member of staff who was trained in first aid and it was left to holidaymakers to try and resuscitate him, its not something that I will forget or ever want to see again.in writing this I hope that things will be put in place in the event it should happen again.I hope that the family returned home swiftly and I offer my sincere condolences. Please make sure this never happens again.

Room Tip: Bungalows excellent for families

Dear guest,

We would like to thank you for choosing Avra Beach Resort for holidays and also for sharing your experience on Tripadvisor.

Concerning the tragic accident we would like to inform you that the guest was playing volley ball with his family, it was not an organized activity by our animation team. Also we have 3 persons from our staff certified with First Aid degree but we had a guest who was a doctor so we preferred to leave the doctor handle the situation.

Once again thank you for your feedback. It has been a great pleasure to have you staying at our hotel and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Best Regards,
Photini Mina

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013 via mobile

I have recently returned from a weeks’ holiday at Avra Beach, we had a wonderful time and really could not fault this hotel. Having already travelled to several Greek islands this was our first time to Rhodes, and I chose Avra Beach hotel due to its beach front location and close proximity to Rhodes Town. The hotel is situated just a 10 minute drive from the airport, so I would recommend taking a taxi for convenience, which will cost around 15 Euros.

On arrival to the hotel we were shown to our room, on the 4th (top) floor with uninterrupted views across the turquoise sea to Turkey which was beautiful! The situation of this hotel is directly on the beach front and the views are really spectacular. The room is basic but spacious and clean and was perfectly adequate for our weeks stay. There were 3 beds in the room (2 were pushed together to make a double) and one spare bed. We had a balcony with table and chairs and there was also a fridge and hairdryer and air conditioning in the room, so we had everything we needed. The hotel also provides a beach towel for your stay which was a nice touch. The maids cleaned the room every day and there were toiletries provided.

The pool area is fabulous, a really large clean pool with plenty of space to sunbathe either by the pool, or right by the sea (which was a little windy at times!). The beach bar was right on the beach front too, so great to sit and enjoy a cocktail whilst admiring the views. I had read some reviews prior to travelling about the morning rush for sunbeds, which is a pet hate of mine. True enough, on our first morning there were already towels out at 6.30 am – I think the space by the pool is the most popular, but there were usually beds available on the sea front a little later on. I don’t really know how the hotel can control this but it’s a little frustrating having to set an alarm to get up early when you are on holiday to relax!!

The food in the hotel was superb – I wasn’t sure what to expect from All Inclusive but it was fantastic. ! Breakfast was nice (cooked breakfast, meat, cheese, yogurt, cereal, pastries) but would have liked some fresh fruit (not just tinned). At lunch time and for evening meal there was a huge selection of salads, meat, fish, cheese, breads, soup, pasta – definitely something for everyone. I loved helping myself to the Greek salad which was delicious. We were there for a week and could have eaten something different every night. Maybe after 2 weeks it would become a little repetitive. The waiting staff do an amazing job of keeping the restaurant organised at peak times and turning round the tables so quickly, and always smiling. The restaurant is large and airy but there is also an outside covered terrace where you can sit and enjoy the views whilst eating. The drinks I found to be ok, one or 2 of the cocktails were nice, and there is a self-service machine at the pool bar where you can have water, fruit juice, tea and coffee. Behind the bar you can ask for cocktails, all kinds of spirits, as well as Pepsi, Fanta etc. There are snacks available all day, pizza, filled rolls, pastries, biscuits, ice cream. You can also get frappes at the pool bar but they cost 1.5 Euros.

The staff were all so friendly, reception, bar staff, cleaning staff always had a smile and made an effort to chat to us. The entertainment team were also great – there are daily activities (same timetable each day) such as beach volleyball, water polo, darts, football, water aerobics etc. so guests can get involved as much as they want to but there is certainly no pressure. These guys were also good at advising about the local area and how to make the most out of your stay (thanks Chris!). There is music played by the pool for most of the day but it wasn’t a nuisance. The evening shows were just ok, a bit of fun getting some of the guests up and involved. We found the clientele was mainly Eastern European and not so many from UK but this was fine and we spoke to a lot of interesting people and made some really good friends.

The area directly outside the hotel is very nice, there are shops, bars, restaurants, a pharmacy and a large supermarket within close proximity. There are also car hire places and a place where you can book excursions. We ventured out a couple of nights along the street to Sebastian’s Bar where they show all sorts of sport on many screens but also serve the most delicious Greek food (highly recommended).

We took a taxi to Rhodes old town one afternoon / evening which is a must when you are visiting Rhodes. It’s a fascinating and really authentic place, with a maze of cobbled streets lined with bars, restaurants and shops. We had a meal out while we were here and were spoiled for choice with the selection. There is a really great atmosphere here. The new town looks much more modern with designer shops and McDonalds etc. We were advised to visit in the late afternoon / early evening as during the day, this is where the huge cruise ships dock, so the town is packed with these people. We arrived just before sun set so it was nice to see the place in day light and then dark.

As mentioned in a previous review, there was an incident at the hotel whilst we were there where a guest took ill and there was no one trained to help him, therefore other guest had to step in. It was really alarming to see as all the guests crowded round the person to see what was going on - there were no staff members controlling the ‘crowd’. I really think a hotel of this size should have an on-site Doctor in the event that any guest becomes unwell or has an accident. Regardless, an ambulance was called and it arrived quickly but I think the hotel should review its emergency / first aid procedure and ensure all staff in the hotel are trained to deal with such events.

Overall, we had a wonderful holiday, I’d certainly return here and would recommend this island and hotel to family and friends.

having recently returned from this great, beach front hotel, i would like to say a big thankyou to all the hotel staff and entertainment team for making our holiday so enjoyable.

we travelled as a group of 8, ranging from 9 years through to grandparents, and can honestly say this a hotel for all ages. the hotel is rated 4 star, but as with all european hotels, is a good 3 star in the uk. the avra beach is a very well maintained hotel and is lovely and clean, although the bedrooms are a little dated. we stayed in a family room in the main complex, which was positioned on the ground floor overlooking the grassed area leading to the pool, and was really spacious with a sliding partition to seperate the main bedroom from the lounge/2nd bedroom, while our family stayed in the twin rooms with a sea view, but were often kept awake at night by the parties at the complex next door.

the reception staff at Avra Beach are great and can't do enough to help, whilst the cleaners are very efficient and the restaurant staff did their best to accommodate our large group on the limited amount of large tables, although it was a case of 'first come first served' after having the same tables reserved for several families. having said that the selection of food was okay, and we could always find something to make a meal, although it was nice to eat out after the first week and try something different. the snack bar is fantastic and provides pizza, filled rolls and cakes and biscuits until midnight as well as self service tea and coffee situated next to the pool bar.

the pool area is quite small and only holds a small amount of sunbeds next to the pool but the best part of the avra beach is that it is situated directly onto the sand and shingle beach down a few steps and provides an additional large area for sunbeds, although you need to be up around 7a.m to get a good spot. the entertainment team do a great job and we made great friends with Chris, Artur and Elin, who do their best to get everyone involved in the activities although leave you alone if you wish. also a big thankyou to Nikos and Kiriakos who work tirelessly on the pool bar.

the Avra Beach is situated about a 5-10 minute walk into Ixia, which is a small town with plenty of shops and bars and about a 20 minute bus ride(2.2 euro for adults and 1.1 euro for kids) or 10 minute taxi ride(9 euros) from the wonderful Rhodes Town with its designer shops in the new town to the rustic local shops and bars in the old town set in the walls of the old roman town, while the port offers visits to nearby greek islands and day trips to marmaris for around 30 euros each. one word of warning though, eating and drinking in Rhodes Town is really expensive, be sure to check the prices before ordering, you will be looking at around £6 per pint in some bars.

all in all though a trip to the Avra Beach will be a great choice and we would love to return in the near future.

Room Tip: sea view rooms in the main complex are noisy late at night,

Avra was ok , you get what you pay for . The rooms are typical Greek & very large & clean . Good shower , plenty of wardrobe space & storage , hair dryer in room .
The food was ok , eatable , but nothing very special . Very poor , for vegetarians. So disappointed that , they did very little Greek food . We ate out every evening , because we love Greek food , it is a big part of our holiday .
Drinks are very poor quality !
Hotel has a nice setting , right on the beach , lovely to be so close to the sea .
Entertainment on a night shockingly bad , what we saw of it .

While on holiday , a tragic accident happened , other holiday makers dealt with this . Hotel staff , had no idea what to do & no one was fist aid trained .
Avra Beach , need to have a life guard / first aider for the safety of there guest ! ! !

Ok holiday , for what we paid

Thank you Avra Beach your staff and everyone who works there are fantastic and cetainly could not have done more. The sunbed issue is not that bad and to be honest we were there in august and there was always a few free, the food was fab and IF you dont chose a bit of EVERYTHING every night you never need to repeat your food you eat! The road outside is very busy but our room was the closest to the road in the resort but we never heard it. Place is fab and the staff make it great.
