“Brilliant Location and Lovely People”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

We went to the Solemar for 2 weeks for our honeymoon and I really can't complain. The room was spacious and comfy with brilliant maid service! We had a sea view which was beautiful and even though it was on a main road it wasn't very loud at night and there wasnt much noise from the bar below.
The pool is brilliant, its the first time i've ever seen a pool with enough beds for everyone and for them to have cushions on (a really nice touch i thought). The cats are not a problem they are easily avoided and very friendly. The pool bar is set back from the pool, but not a problem as it provided every drink you could ask for with friendly service. The pool side food isn't bad serving pizza and chips with a bit of salad too.
The food as many people say was basic and repetitive but we never went hungry and the deserts were gorgeous all home made and spoilt for choice. If you didn't fancy the food there are lots of different bars to choose from literally a stones throw from the hotel with good, cheap food and drinks.
The location of the hotel is amazing as its over the road from the beach near lots of shops and bars and only a short bus trip to Rhodes Town which is beautiful and the Old Town is even nicer.
We didn't go on any excursions as they were very expensive from the rep but the hotel did them cheaper and if you confident then you can make your own adventures, we did and had a great time.
Finally the staff are worth their weight in gold! They work so hard and they never grumble but provide such friendly service with a smile. The reception staff are happy to help with any questions you have and the bar staff Gabrielle and Manos are priceless their super serivce and friendly attitude are the reason we stayed up far too late some nights :p
I would say judge the hotel for yourself but personally I would go back in a flash. Lovely holiday with nice hotel and super people.

Had a week here in September. Due to major senior moment when booking, all along we were expecting to go the Mareblue (4 star) - don't ask! Had booked a garden apartment, which was very basic though clean, shower fitment was broken. View from bedroom window was appalling - wall 2 feet away with peeling paint/pipes running along. Not prettyYou don't get the beds made up as in the hotel either - bottom sheet put on, with folded sheet on top. No top cover. We managed to swap and get a room in the hotel - thanks to the very helpful receptionis Kathalika - she was great! Hotel room much nicer. Very clean. Shower a tight fit - not easy to avoid flooding the bathroom. Pool area was very nice. Food in restaurant very average - we were very spoilt last year at the Hermes in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. At the Solemar it was very repetitive, not a great choice, though I loved the salad, and despite my comments I did manage to put on 4 lbs. Yes, there were flies in the dining room. First time all inclusive holiday - not over impressed with pool side snacks. Enjoyed the local wine though.
The hotel is also just set back from an extremely busy road (though couldn't hear traffic from our room towards the back). Difficult to cross most of the time, but wish we'd thought of going to one of the hotels on the other side of the road for a drink/sunbathe. We did hear the two dogs next door, especially at night. And the cockerel that crows whilst it's still dark.
I wouldn't return to the Solemar, nor Ixia.

Had a great time at the solemar. The staff were very friendly and the service that they provided was excellent. The hotel was very basic but at the same time very clean and ideal for what we were looking for. The food was good and varied most days. Gabriel the bar man was very friendly and provided a very good service. As for all of the people moaning about the food then all I can say is if you don't want to try Greek food then stay at home with your fish and chips. If you want a five star hotel then pay five star prices. All in all a great time had by us both. Thanks for a great holiday.

Mark and Diana.

Stayed here in September 2008, back then the apartments were really spacious & very clean & everything you wanted from a self catering property. We did hear a lot of people who stayed in the hotel & didn't have the same experience so we were glad to have been staying in the apartments. Apartments were cleaned daily & towels changed after couple days, we were in the very back block & away from the noise of the busy main road. Ixia was a good base for our first visit to Rhodes as it's only around a 10-15 min bus ride away & buses were plentiful although a little crammed, but at 1 euro each way to Rhodes town we couldn't complain, the bus stop is just out in the front of Solemar Hotel but coming back you have to cross this busy road & take your life in your hands crossing, there is an underpass near one of the hotels which we did start using as it's much safer than dodging traffic which never slows down. Rhodes is a wonderful island & something for everyone, the town is full of history with the old walls & palace of the grand master etc, also worth a visit & free (except for the local bus fare) is to visit Monte Smith, back in 2008 I think we paid about 1 euro each for each way from the town & back, at Monte Smith there is a Acropolis of ancient Rhodes, also an amphitheatre & Hellenistic stadium, built in the 3rd century BC, where the Athletic events of the Alioi Games took place & there is a small museum explaining about the use of the stadium. Also a visit to Lindos is a must & walk up to the Acropolis, Lindos is a lovely village with a maze of shops, bars & restaurants all with wonderful views. We did around the island tour which can be booked in Ixia with Sigma travel agency - there was an office in Ixia & also one in Trianda. Also worth mentioning is a visit to the island of Symi you visit on a ferry which seemed to last a lifetime but however they take you first to Panormitis Monastery & then back on the ferry to Yialós Symi Harbour this is fabulous for photos as the harbour is in a horse show like bay with all the accommodation, houses etc blending in with the landscape & also like Rhodes, Symi was also very warm. You can also visit Marmaris, Turkey for the day which we also liked as we fancied just going to see what Turkey would be like, they take you for breakfast up a mountain which overlooks both Marmaris & the next resort of Icmeler, then comes the big sell in a carpet shop which is joined onto a jewellers - a simple no is enough though & this is also the meeting point for the end of the day, you can meet the guide for lunch & they will show you some of the best eating places in Marmaris - we choose to go with the guide & were quite surprised by how nice the meal was (can't remember the name of the place but it was on the harbour front near the end & it had huge purple parasols). Anyhow Turkey was quite nice although we preferred the look of Icmeler to Marmaris. Back in Rhodes rather than eating out all the time in Ixia why not explore Rhodes town, Ixia has quite a lot of expensive restaurants but in the town you can find the old style tavernas for reasonable prices & also the shopping is better in Rhodes town than Ixia the largest street in the old town is Socratous street. Can't wait for our second visit to Rhodes

Just back from a week at Solemar 22-29 sept... Firstly i think we must have had different rooms lay out to others, as there was no way we needed to "put our feet in the shower to use the toilet" lol, they faced different directions. The room was kept clean, towels and bedding replaced every couple of days, and always plenty of soap, loo roll etc. (The shower pressure was very impressive and never ran out of hot water.) The balcony was a little cramped, but it got the sun during the day, and we sat and watched some lovely sunsets/moon rises too.
We didnt bother about the air con, it was only really hot one night anyway, and the safe deposit box is by reception. the location is good, easy to walk into the tone (although its not that exciting) and the beach which wassnt too busy further along, and lovely clean sea.

The resturant was fine, clean and the staff worked hard clearing tables etc, we always found enough food, cutlery, plates, although we tended not to go down until after the first hour or so, and it wasnt ever too busy and the food was coming out hot and fresh. As for the salad, it was very tasty, cold, and we certainly didnt see any flies apart from when we sat down by the pool. Plenty of puds, ice-cream, beer, wine, soft drinks, though the hot drinks werent that good.

The pool area was clean, and always plenty of sun beds, so nice not to be up at stupid oclock to get a bed, there were maybe half a dozen cats, thats all and only came to you if encouraged, it was nice to see a few of the guests giving them cat food.
The staff were all lovely, even the girl at the pool bar became quite chatty, giving my other half the occasional wink! I suppose if people want copious amounts of strong alcohol, and expect to eat every couple of hours then they may have cause to moan, but for a normal day to day holiday, with enough food and drinks to keep you full, then i would recommend the hotel, and just enjoy not having to cook and clean up after yourself for the week.
The rooms and the reception area all had notices that drink were to be paid for after 11.30pm, so maybe some people just want to moan for the sake of it.
Oh and yes, i agree with other reviewers that a kettle in the room would be a welcome extra. All in all i think Ixia was a little quiet, but the hotel was alright, and certainly for what we paid very good value.

Room Tip: Sea view look good but you do have the bar area below, one side view is the mountain, but has dogs a...

what a flippen nightmare!..we had the bad luck of choosing this hotel to stay in from the 19th sept for a week! (some poor people were there for 2 weeks!!).....the bedrooms were very basic indeed..and the so called "bathroom" was even worse! picture sitting on the loo..with your feet reaching into the shower tray in front of you!...you couldn even stand in the shower as it was that small!..

now for the food!...if you like to have "mincemeat" of any kind for every meal..well this hotel is defiantley for you!...all the food was under temp....with even the salad bar warmer than the "hot food"...we lived on boiled eggs/toast everyday for breakfast...feta cheese on bread rolls for lunch everyday..and soup for dinner...(on the nights we didnt pay to go out to eat that is!..(so much for all inc??!!)...the drinks in the bar you had to pay for after 11.30pm!....(there was no mention of this when we booked or on arrival either.).....

the so called "bar/pool" snack area was nothing more than a run down shack!..with flies everywhere you went!..(and even in the dining room!)....we only went there for 5mins on the first day, and after that we went over to their "sister hotel" opposite, called the "marimare" which was in a beautiful surrounding over looking the sea!.....(it was a guest who told us about this on our first day ather..thank god!...but we had to pay for any food/drinks...which again was a complete waste of time going all inc.!.....

i feel though that i should add at least "1 positive" comment on this hotel....and that is for all the poor staff having to work there!..they went out of there way to be of any help to us, even though they were all under presssure with everyone complaining!.....but the 1 person who pulled out all the stops to make sure we were all ok was their wonderful barman "gabrial"!!...who was a star!...HE ALWAYS GREETED EVERYONE WITH A HUGE SMILE, AND NEVER FORGOT ANYONES NAME!...he never stopped once he came into work, and everyone fell in love with his wonderful personality!...(he would be the only reason i would ever go into that hotel again..jus)t to say hello to him!.......

i have made a formal complait to "olympic holidays" (but only at the airport at midnight on the night we were leaving!) as it was impossible to get hold our our so called rep "dean"!...what a joke!...

please, if anyone is thinking of staying at this hotel...please think again!...for your own sanity!...

yes, there will be some "morons" out there saying you only get what you pay for! £1300....i dont think is "cheap"!...i have stayed in a 3 star hotel in other places, and they have been really lovely...so this was a complete shock on arriving there!...(dont be fooled by the front entrance either!)..it looks very nice until you go throught to the "pool area"!.....

you have all be warned folks!...be it on your own head if you sstay there!...good luck!....

also dirty sticky carpets on all the landings! ( not a very good site when you step out of the lift?!)....
