“Great simple hotel in historical surroundings”

Hotel Andreas

Jul 3, 2008

This is an excellent choice for people interested in the old town of Rhodes, and who wants to get away from the (sometimes overwhelming) tourist crowds. As it is located in a very old building from the Ottoman period the interior is simple and sometimes unpractical, but with a soul. We stayed in room # 20 ("Darley"), and it's very small, but clean, cozy and with a nice view to the harbour/ocean. The area is very quiet, however inside the hotel there are no "secrets", if you know what I mean... By the way, # 20 is located just under # 21 which is advertised as the honeymoon suite.

Bath/WC is also small, but OK. Clean and en-suite.

Extremely friendly and helpful staff, and the airport pick-up service is recommendable, as regular taxis are hard to be persuaded into entering the old town (they wouldn't even fit). The hotel pick-up car was a tiny Daihatsu in our case, which turned out to be perfect for the narrow alleyways.

As a conclusion: absolutely recommended, but not if you're interested in high level of comfort, large room, beachlife etc.

“Beautiful views and great hosts at the Hotel Andreas”

Hotel Andreas

Hotel Andreas is in a wonderful location with so much ambiance! The hotel’s hosts are wonderful and friendly. Our room was clean and nice though the pictures on the site make the rooms look larger than they really are.

Some rooms have A/C, some don’t, so if that is important, make sure you communicate that clearly when making your booking! Also, if you make a booking directly with the hotel, get a confirmation of dates, room and price via email to eliminate any confusion when you arrive.

Getting to the hotel can be a bit of a challenge. If you have a lot of luggage or don’t want to lug suitcases through cobblestone streets and up stairs then this may be a bit difficult for you, but it will be worth it.

When we initially arrived to the island via plane the hotel had arranged a taxi for us which was extremely helpful. But on our return trip to Rhodes via ferry, we had an extremely difficult time getting a taxi to take us to the hotel and had to ask locals to help us get a taxi. This took nearly an hour to resolve. The hotel was unable to help.

Once you arrive at Hotel Andreas it is worth it. The terrace is wonderful and has great views of the city! Having your morning breakfast or a drink in the afternoon there is fabulous. It would be nice to have access to the terrace in the late afternoon or evenings, too, as it was such a wonderful location to relax and take in the view. Breakfast with freshly baked breads, cheeses, meats, eggs, great coffee, is perfect. You almost don’t want to leave to start your day.

Overall, I would recommend staying at the Hotel Andreas. It is not perfect, but it is in a grand location and a special experience I wouldn’t have wanted to miss.

“Charm and Touring Convenience in Old City”

We stayed in Room 21 (Justene at the top) at the Andreas Hotel in Oct. 2007. It is a very charming place within the old city walls. The room was reasonable in size, cleanliness and comfort, but the bathroom was a tight fit. The bath was insuite, which is not always the case at Andreas. Open windows provided good ventilation and the air conditioning took care of the hot days. The view of the city outside our windows was terrific. The Andreas is located within the old walls, so you can walk to all attractions, restaurants and shopping. Breakfast was good, although it lacked any meats or hot plates. I think you can request eggs cooked to order. The terrace was a very pleasant place to eat or have wine later. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The airline lost our luggage for nearly 3 days and the staff was constantly on the phone to track it down and get it brought from Gatwick to Rhodes airport. The price for the room was reasonable, but does not include breakfast.

A couple of points to consider. The top room (#21) has a difficult staircase to go up and down without elevator service. With luggage you have to be fairly agile. This room is not suitable for elderly with heavy luggage. Otherwise it has the best view and conveniences. The hotel can set up transfers from the ferry port and airport for a reasonable rate (8 euro from ferry port one-way) that take you almost to the hotel door. Normal taxis stop outside the walls and you have to drag luggage a distance over unbearably rough streets. We had to drive a rental car into the inner city once and the narrow roads and parked cars/motorcycles made it a difficult job. The airport is a significant distance away and taxi service is around 20 euro.

We enoyed our stay at the Andreas and were happy we chose it.

“what I expected”

Hotel Andreas

I booked room 16 in hotel Andreas for the 2 nights after asking advice from Tripadvisor contributors. Getting from St Johns Gate (where the taxi dropped us ) was a mini ordeal ; over cobbles in blazing heat with wheeled suitcases, but was worth it for the view. Our reception was excellent, people were just checking out of our room when we arrived, we were offered a courtesy drink on the terrace and got our breath back. Our room was available as soon as possible and to be fair we were there before midday. The room was as I expected 2 single beds 'downstairs' and a double on a mezzanine floor (somewhat like the traditional Greek marriage bed). The toilet/shower was tiny but adequate and clean. Beds clean and comfortable. Although the room technically sleeps 4 I wouldn't want to share it with 3 others for a prolonged period as there is not much space. It was ideal for 3 of us for 2 nights. I also noticed through open doors that some other rooms were quite small so you should check what you are booking suits your needs. Also there was a communal fridge available, a bonus when temperature are over 30 degrees. Breakfast was perfect for a mere 6 euro each. As one of my companions commented she could happily eat breakfast there for the rest of her life! All in all good value and pleasant and helpful service. Sorry I didn't take photos but the hotel's website photos are honest.

“Nice but small”

Nice hotel. It was cheap, 60 euros a night. For this price, however, I had the smallest view I've ever stayed in. Me and my girlfriend had to dance around each other whilst in the one narrow area of the room which had standing space. The rest of the room was taken up by a huge, very comfortable bed. It's a nice place if you are just going to sleep and want lots of natural light. If you want a room to lounge around in, this is not the place. Still, the hotel was very charming, the room romantic, and the breakfast superb. Thus the 4 rating. Though 3.5 is probably more appropriate.
