“A great location with comfortable rooms and friendly owners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2014

On the fringe of the busy tourist district near the top of the hill in Old Town, Stavros offers a quiet location and comfortable, though basic, accommodations. Our room was compact but comfortable, with a bit of street noise (an occasional motorbike but hardly any cars) now and then but nothing oppressive. The shower was excellent, though a bit cramped, and the bathroom itself really suits the definition of a "water closet."

We came over from Marmaris on the ferry and the whole trip was improvised at the last moment, so we got the last available room for our first night. Stavros proposed to move us to a better room -- larger and quieter -- at the same price, but we were content to remain where we were and not move our stuff again. He went out of his way to help us find places to go and arranged for us to rent a car for a grand tour of the island -- and the drive up the west coast was splendid. The bar downstairs is small but crammed with an amazing collection of memorabilia from all over, including football/soccer items and caps from U.S. and British sailors who like to frequent the place. The mellow bar is perfect for a beer or nightcap before bed with some very congenial patrons.

Stavros wants his guests to enjoy themselves and is willing to do everything he can to make that happen. This is an easy recommendation to offer.

Room Tip: It's a bit quieter away from the narrow (but mostly calm) street, yet we also enjoyed a taste of...

This is one of those reviews where I’ve debated whether to write one at all because I fear once this gem of a place is discovered by too many people it will become impossible to get a room! Selfish, I know, but I decided to write one anyway because we had such a lovely time staying here.

As with all hotels in the Old Town, finding it can be a bit of an adventure, especially if you get a taxi driver that drops you at the wrong entrance (which seems to happen more often than not). Trudging around the cobblestones with our luggage in the dark was not fun but we found it eventually. On the upside, Stavros was more than happy to help arrange a taxi back to the airport and, as it was around 9am, the driver was able to come right up to the hotel so we didn’t have to lug our bags back outside the walls.

Firstly, the location in the Old Town just can’t be beat. Close enough to all the action at night and away enough to be get a good night’s sleep. While the hotel itself is located above Stavros Bar (same owner), the bar never seemed to get rowdy and noisy enough to disturb us. Despite the hassles in finding your way around at times, I would not have wanted to stay anywhere else – the atmosphere and history of it all is just amazing.

The room, while basic, was well-kept and pleasant. Our twin room had two single beds, each with a little bedside table. There was a large bar fridge, perfect for keeping cold drinks, yoghurt for breakfast, etc. and a kettle with cups and spoons for making tea and coffee. There is also a television but we never used ours, but I assume it only receives the Greek television stations, not pay tv/satellite. The airconditioning worked well but we only used it sporadically during the day - at night we preferred to open the windows for fresh air.

The bathroom was small but clean with a good layout. Our bathroom had only a shower and it was a fairly snug fit - if you’re larger than average, you would probably find it quite difficult to shower properly. But perhaps the other rooms have larger showers or a bath.

The hotel is quite secure, you cannot enter the front door without the key, and the ‘reception’ is at the bar downstairs. There is a rooftop patio area with tables and chairs for chilling out and soaking up some sun and some drying lines for laundry (but we just took ours to a laundromat)

Stayed in these rooms for a week and after my experiences in the new town the silence was perfect. Access to a large shared balcony allowed myself to enjoy the breeze and the sun before deciding what to do that day. The room price also included use of the air conditioning unlike when I have stayed elsewhere where it always was an extra. Will definitely be returning to the Sunlight Hotel in 2013.

This is a small hotel of just 5 rooms above a bar in the heart of Old Town Rhodes. Our room was the smallest and was a little tight but in the middle of Old Town all rooms tend to be a little small. Children are welcome and I have seen many families return year after year. It comes with air con, fridge and TV plus en suite shower room. There is no swimming pool but the there is a secluded roof terrace. Rooms are around 50 Euros each for room only. Meals are available in the bar below or there is a huge choice of restaurants nearby. The hotel is run by Stavros and his wife Soula and Stavros is a real character. Nothing is too much trouble and I have yet to find a language he does not speak. If you want a fun place this it.

Room Tip: If you want a larger room just tell Stavros when you book
