“The best of modern and medieval splendor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

We had an amazing experience staying at Zacosta Villa, with the only sad part of it being that we could only find a reservation for one night. An additional night at this delightful small (three room) villa in the old city of Rhodes would have been perfect.

Zacosta is located on a small side-alley (Xenofontos) that makes you feel like you are back in medieval Rhodes, cobblestone streets, archways, etc. - but it's only a minute or two to the squares and larger streets that comprise the (more touristy) parts of Rhodes.

The most outstanding feature of our stay was the hospitality offered by John, the owner and hotelier. Not only did he correspond with us to help facilitate our arrival, but (as we were arriving from Turkey by ferry) - he even picked us up from the terminal in his own car, lest we have problems finding a taxi. The hotel is located a bit of a walk inside the old town - but he helped take our bags from the car (or taxi, on your arrival at the entry-gate) - to the hotel doors. He loaned us a brochure on the history of Rhodes (fascinating to read, really made our appreciation of the buildings and massive defensive walls more meaningful) and was always available for questions and suggestions (for example, the restaurant he recommended for dinner, not far from the hotel, was one of the best we ate at during our stay in Greece - kaupia).

Zacosta is an old building that John rennovated from the ground up, creating an oasis of peace, with a wonderful courtyard (where one of the finest breakfasts is served each morning, at your leisure), and 3 rooms furnished simply but in modern fashion. The WiFi was a little spotty at first, but worked thereafter. We were very happy with the bathroom and the amenities (safe, toilettries, bathrobes). John even gave us Zacosta sun-hats as keep-sakes!

This is the kind of place that people return to year-after-year, and offers a refereshing counter-balance to the larger touristy establishments that Rhodes is better known for. If you are looking for personal service, quality and quiet, close to the heart of old Rhodes - look no farther.

Zacosta is the most unique hotel/villa i ever stayed in Europe. It is located in the medieval town, a 'backlane', staying here is like you were living in the medieval age! Yet the room and facilities are modern and very functional. So a stay here would be always memorable as the environ and the villa are so different from the usual modern, tourist hotels. The host, John, is the most hospitable villa owner i ever met. He knew it was 'troublesome' to bring our luggage to the villa (taxi cannot enter that part of the old city) and also to locate the villa, so he gave clear instruction via email for the taxi driver where to drop us, and when we arrived at the pickup point, John was already there waiting to help us with the luggae and bring us to the hotel. Two days later, John personally drove us to the port for us to take the ferry to Patmos Island, and when we returned after two night stay in Patmos, John was at the port to welcome us and bring us back to the hotel. John is such a warm person and always ready to help to make our stay enjoyable, I now consider John a personal friend. For some people who like all the convenience of staying in a modern hotel in a modern area of the city, they may find the villa hotel a bit 'odd' but John's hospitality more than compensate for whatever inconvenience of staying in the old town. By the way, staying in the old town has a lot of advantages for sight seeing etc too! All the sights are nearby (5 min walk) and there are also many good restaurants around, ask for advice from John!

This was our second stay at Zacosta Villa Hotel and, again, we really enjoyed our holiday relaxing in this beautiful villa, which provides a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
This year, having previously stayed in the other two rooms, we chose to stay in the suite and we were not disappointed. The furnishings and wonderful toiletries provided by John were luxurious and the facilities and cleanliness are first rate.
As usual, our host, John, was welcoming, generous very friendly extremley helpful throughout our stay. We spent a number of nights chatting and relaxing in the charming courtyard. My Wife Diane is a gardening enthusiast and thought it was lovely to see how much the shrubs have grown since last year. I am sure that the popularity and enthusiastic comments about Zacosta with follow suit.
We chose to venture into the new town this year to sample the delights of 'Taman',another wonderful, authentic Greek restaurant. If you get the chance, the reasonable walk is well worth the effort. Also, a day trip to Symi was truly memorable.
Thanks to John for your kindness and generosity-we look forward to seeing you again next year!.

Room Tip: All rooms are good!

This may sound odd to do a review when we didn't stay at this hotel....we only wish that the room we wanted HAD been available and intend to return there just as soon as we can. Our friends had booked two rooms and unfortunately the third room was taken so we stayed in a nearby hotel. All three Zacosta rooms are great, the courtyard is fantastic, the bar - excellant, our friends raved about the breakfast, AND John is just the most amazing person. He welcomed us and treated us like his own guests (we were at Zacosta most of the time!!) and nothing was too much trouble. He anticipated the wishes of our group, joined us for a friendly drink at times, and answered the zillions of questions we fired at him. To top things off, I carelessly left my Ipad at Athens airport - yes, you've guessed correctly, it was John I contacted to organise the return of it!!
He realised how stressed I was trying to do this from another country and efficiently, without any fuss, streamlined it's return. I don't think I have met a host/landlord/friend who goes that extra mile in such a manner that people don't even notice he is doing it....he even printed off our boarding passes for us - how good is that!! We plan to return to Zacosta as soon as our bank manager gives us the oK! Thank you John!

Room Tip: All 3 roooms are excellant - the suite is huge, the second bedroom lovely and airy (both rooms overl...

We really wanted to stay in the old town and read all the reviews on this hotel and they were all true. What a wonderful place to stay. John could not have been more helpful with everything we could have asked for - from suggestions on where to go, maps, restaurant etc - what a wonderful and generous host. We stayed in the dowstairs room which was rather small but this was more than compensated by it's own door opening on to the lovely courtyard which was such a lovely and relaxing place after a hard day of sightseeing.. Located in a quiet street away from the tourist crowds yet in easy walking distance to everything. We had a wonderful stay and have wonderful memories.

Thank you to our wonderful host John for a truly enjoyable 3 days in the old city of Rhodes. As well as organizing our transfers to and from Zacosta Villas John recommended a wonderful beach called Tassos and even drove us there. His restaurant suggestions were perfect and the breakfast he provided each morning in that glorious courtyard were delicious. Our room at the top of the stairs was spacious and comfortable and all in all made for a lovely stay.He even took the time to courier our camera charger to our hotel in Athens. Many thanks.

Had to take a moment to state how pleasant my stay at the Zacosta Villa was for two nights a week back. I cannot say enough good things about the place and especially John. I drove in from Lindos and John assisted me with finding a parking and met me when I got lost. There is a reason 80+ reviews have excellent as their review. Kudos to John!
