1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Sun palace hotel. Ok if ya like flies sharing the food. The same food every nite, Very slippery so many ppl spillting there heads open. Rooms well lets just say i would not put a cockroche in their most definatly not kids.Full of stray cats and dogs and there pooh left all over the floors cause it hot the smell is discusting. Staff very rude and definatly not there to help u. Boring entertainment we seen the black velvets performme 3 times in 14 nights shocking. Holes round plug sockets. Aircon was leaking black nasty water very dangerous. Blood on the actual matress. Fag burns in the bedding. All u get out the reps might as well be am not intrested. The water pipe to the coffee machine in reception was attached to what supposed to be a wall fountain discusting it needs closing down. States its a 4 star. its all false advertising so dont be fooled. Could not wait to get home. My 4yr old still havin nightmares 3wks after we are home. The best part of SUN PALACE IS THE ROAD OUT OF THE HOTEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good stuff: waterpark snack bar, waterpark, air con in rooms is good, fridge in rooms is good, location, cheap car hire and they don't take your credit card details, staff great, beds comfy, weather was great (mid October), close to airport 25 minutes transfer, 10 minute walk into town, great snorkelling at the beach.

Bad stuff: food very poor was tastless lukewarm and flies everywhere, aggressive wasps at the water park snackbar, 30 euros a week for the safe, alcoholic drinks horrible I bought myself a bottle of bacardi and my own cans of Coke as the soft drinks were horrid, if you get a pool view room the noise is terrible, rat in our room (really!), shop was expensive, very little shade in pools and not much depth or variety either, no sparkling wine. My holiday was just sitting in the shade at the waterpark snackbar drinking my own shop bought Bacardi and Cokes and listening to MP3's. All the supplied drinks (both alcoholic and non) were horrid. Meals kept me alive but not much else. Among 5 of us there were 3 episodes of vomiting and 2 episodes of 'the other end' during the week. Not good.

Our previous holiday was all inclusive at the H10 Rubicon Palace in Lanzarote which was outstanding. Don't go here you can get so much better for your money elsewhere. Poor Greece really did look like the economy was on the brink as well which is a shame as the country and it's people are lovely.

Room Tip: Avoid pool view rooms if you want peace and quiet.

Have never been so disappointed before, worst holiday I have ever had!
Reading reviews I was really looking forward to this holiday, I was even packed 4 weeks before I was due to go but from the minute we arrived it was 1 disappointment followed by another.
We stayed the last 2 weeks of the season and felt like we were just getting in the way of the hotel closing.
ROOMS- We had a family room, it was dark with hardly any natural light what so ever. We had the most awful smell of sewage every night from the drains just outside, made us feel physically sick. The patio doors were very hard to open and they wouldn't even lock (not very safe considering we were ground floor) Ant's were a real problem aswell. Bathrooms are run down with cracked tiles and mould. The toilet flush fell off the wall. And the floor tiles are leathal when wet and you cn't avoid getting them wet cuz when you let the bath plug out it comes up through the floor before draing away. Eventually a week into our stay we did get moved when we realised other guests had been moved (hotel said they had no more rooms) We were moved into the newer block. The room wasn't much better ants a continuing problem to the point the cleaner just handed me the ant killer so she didn't have to keep coming over. Faulty electrics, wires just hanging out the wall, Rusty water was leaking onto the terrace from the rusty air con unit (i think that's what it was) this wasn't just grose but dangerous aswell cuz the tiles were so slippery when wet. and the terrace was filthy, I had to ask the cleaner to clean it as it had obviously been like this for a while. All in all the rooms were not nice at all.

FOOD- Disgusting! The food in the main dining hall was awful. Same meat every night in a different colour sauce. Dry fish, hard uncooked veg (frozen veg), Chicken just tasted of salt. It felt like we were basically being fed what ever was left in the freezers. The second week was even worse with the choices really deminishing. Flies were everywhere and none of the food was covered. The morning bread for toast was just left on the counter compltely uncovered, the flies had a field day with this and only 1 toaster for the whole hotelwith elements that had gone so you had to put the bread through 3 to 4 times before it started to toast. Birds were also free to just fly around the dining room leaving birds mess on the dining tables and chairs. When I pointed this out to staff they just walked away. The saving grace was the waterpark food, fresh pizza everyday, but there is only so many slices of pizza you can eat!
Drinks were pretty bad too but then they often are at AI so won't say much about that but what did annoy me was when drinks machines were running out that was it, they wouldn't refill them because it was end of season....I still paid for AI so expect the same treatment that guets recieved in July. Fizzy drinks machines in the dining room were flat and when we told the staff again they just shrugged their shoulders. No one cared because all the wanted to do was close and go home!
Never at any point during our 2 week stay did we have any of the themed nights, We had No BBQ night, No mexican night, No italian night, No carvery and no Greek night with Greek folk music and dancing as advertised in the programme in the rooms.

Entertainment was again Awful.....We traveled with friends and between us we had 12 children ranging from 1-15 and there was absolutely nothing for them to do. The entertainment of an evening consisted of- sit in a circle and throw a ball in a hat, 4-5 kids disco songs, bingo the a quiz or Kareoke if they couldn't be bothered with the quiz. And none of this started til about 8.45pm, quite late to just be starting the entertainment. Some quizes the kids couldn't even join in cuz it was a drinking game, fun for adults but when kids went to run on stage with the answer the were shuved away, not really a great way to get the whole family involved. We ended up spending hundreds of euros just on the pool tables to keep our kids happy. When it rained which it did for 3 days we had no entertainment at all and yes rain is quite common at this time of year in Rhodes but no one had planned for this so no entertainment was put on. You were lost at night in this hotel if you didn't have a pack of cards or Uno. We couldn't even go back to our rooms to watch tv cuz the only english channel was world news.
Entertainers- Sean was just plain rude and how he became an entertainer I do not know. 2 of the girls were just wet blankets with very little personality at all. Lauren was lovely but she went home the 1st week we were there and Aurel (entertainment manager) was fab, he made you smile the minute he walked in a room, shame he was only there from bingo onwards.

Other things wrong with this hotel- No health and safety standards at all, highchairs with broken straps so can't secure your child. Loose railings on upper floors. Walkways like icerinks when wet, Public toilet areas out of use for days, cleaners mopping floors with no signs, many accidents happening in the 2 weeks I was there, 1 lady broke her neck, a man cut the back of his head and a child cut his chin open. Animals free to go around the dining areas pooing where they please, Just disgusting!

The only redeeming factor to this hotel is the waterpark and the staff who work in it. Food was better there and the lifeguards were fantastic

Faliraki has also had it day, not only were we in an awful hotel but resort aswell. Faliraki looks like it was aboned many years ago. The fairground and funland are just pieces of baron waste land. Restuarants and bars were closed, They looked they had been closed for quite some time and were falling apart. It actually gave me the creeps being there.

I would never ever visit Sun Palce hotel again and certainly would not recommend it to families with kids of any age. I was that shocked at this place I am making a full complaint to FC about just how Dire this place was. I have holidayed to many places in Greece, Cyprus and Egypt most being 3 star hotels and have never felt the need to complain about any of them til now.

Shocking place!!

Room Tip: Ground floor are dark and gloomy and suffer bad with ants

We arrived after 10pm, check in was fine but finding our room was more difficult when told by reception to go left up a bit right etc etc in the dark, It would have been nice to have been given something to eat but nothing was available,We had requested a room in the new block, thankgoodness we got one because the rest of the hotel is old, solid concrete similar to a cell block with stairs and landings ( which is great fun for gangs of kids playing chase, throwing drinks at each other and basically staying out of their parents way,do you get the picture )Flies all over the restaurant food which is always cold, waterpark food is fresh,a la carte food better we ate there every night after speaking direct to hotel, as we found Claire the FC Rep was too defensive and lacked customer service skills, the greek staff were lovely as all greek people are, hotel is a two star at best, also worst time to go end of October as hotel is closing down standards drop

Room Tip: New block overlooking the waterpark top floor, stay away from the annexe, email before travelling also...

Well where do i start, arrived at 9 30pm on the 20th oct 2012. Reception just pointed to the general direction our rooms were, 15mins later we had found it! Not a bad room (we were in the new build, later found out it was an old hotel they had just painted to look pretty but still falling apart!) Had a look around and sat having cocktails by the pool bar....relaxing already! Next morning we go down to the 24hr coffee/tea dispenser....wrappers everywhere....spilt milk on the sides...a jug of UHT milk a third full with a dead fly floating on the top....yeah we'll wait!! Breakfast opened at 7am so off we go to find we had quite a few visiters....flies on all the food! We realised the food was cold and they didnt have the heat lamps on or anything to keep the food hot and the flies at bay! They actually land on you while your eating!! This happened again at lunch and dinner though the food was a little warmer! Well we decided that this hotel was not hygienic at all and was not happy with spending another whole day sharing food with their greedy guests!! We spoke to the first choice rep there (claire) who at first was listening to what we had to say but within 2mins she spoke over us and denied everything that was going on (helpful?!?!) she got us booked into the ala carte so we said we would give it a go! We recommended they try having air con or bug zappers in the restaurant to keep them at bay but again she didnt want to know! The ala carte was complete opposite! The staff were very friendly and helpful.....and no flies!!! We got speaking to Panos who seemed to be the one running things and asked if we could eat there every night, he was more than happy to help us out! Atleast our dinner was sorted! We had a look at the lunch time food in the waterpark and it was 10times better than the main restaurant, but it did get a little boring eating the same meal everyday! Some days they didnt have bacon for breakfast so the only 'meat' they had i can only describe as tinned hotdogs...not to worry theres plenty of eggs!! The entertainment on the night started at 8 30, a little late for some of the kids!! The animation team did a good job overall, the waterpark keeps the kids of all ages busy in the day and most the staff work hard its just a shame that the standards are just not there...even for a 3 star!! I advise anyone who is still thinking of booking this hotel to go in the july/august months as you wont end up with the end of season scraps we labled 'cat food', the cats were fed very well during our stay. Dont believe me....look at the photo evidence!!

I'm not one to usually moan but quite honestly this was the worst holiday I've ever had. I'm not sure who writes the other reviews for this place, probably the staff themselves as by far I certainly wasn't the only customer staying here that complained. I stayed here with my husband, 4 children and my in-laws.

Firstly when we arrived very late at night we were given the wrong room allocation. When we booked through First Choice we clearly stated(and paid extra for) a 6 bedded family room and a seperate double room. We were given 2 4 bedded rooms instead and told by the reception staff that they had no family rooms available at all until 4 days later. After much arguing we decided to just sleep there until we could speak to our rep the next day. The rooms were above the main outdoor bar, very noisy, very cramped and next to the lift shaft and stairwell where children were running up and down throughout the night. Fridge, air conditioning and tv didn't work. Also there was a rather large generator ontop of the roof above us which was horrendously noisy all throughout the night.
Next morning we were again told there was no family room available. The First Choice rep blamed the hotel, hotel blamed First choice. Not acceptable. After spending 2 hours waiting on our rep to speak to us we managed to get another rep to drive over to help us. The best they could do was to provide us with a family room for 5 and a double in the newer block. The rooms themselves were fine but we still didn't have enough beds for our family. 2 of our children were forced to sleep top to tail.

Food-what can I say?! I've been all inclusive before and expect a certain amount of repetition but this was beyond that. Rice that was served 2 days in a row. Salad/veg that never seemed to be changed. Lukewarm at best and very dry. Nothing was labelled. My mother in law is vegetarian and was unable to get any answers as to what was in the food. Sparrows and cats were also every day diners in the restaurant. Birds flying around inside, pooing on tables an chairs! Disgusting! Every adult in my party had a tummy upset, and we are tough Geordies!

Facilities- snack bar at the pool was closed throughout our week there even though it was advertised as being open until 23.00? Adult only pool bar was closed from half way through our stay. Juice ran out and wasn't replenished when asked. On our last day there was no ice cream at all and staff refused to replenish again.

Public toilets inside hotel had no locks on them, just frosted swinging doors?

Main bar is positioned outside but if, as during our stay, it rained of an evening there was not a lot of room inside to sit and have a drink unless you got there early to 'bag a seat'.

Sun beds at the pool are old, threadbare and need replacing, although they are plentiful.

Entertainment-none existent for the majority of our time there. There was 2 days when daytime activities around the pool were on but then that was it. As for an evening, as previously said if it was raining there was no room inside for any entertainment so again nothing was on. On the day it was on the children's mini disco was supposed to start at 8.45pm. Rather late in my opinion for little ones if it had actually started on time in any case but as it turned out no one came along until 9.10pm when they then played 4 songs and that was it. My children were left extremely disappointed. It's not hard to entertain children! No sign of any themed nights etc for adults, very very boring.

Kids club-this is where it gets worse! I would admit that I'm not a great fan of kids clubs on the whole but as Rhodes had essentially closed down for the season and my children were bored we decided to go along. I was astonished at the lack of responsibility taken by the club. When I took my youngest two I was not asked for my name, their names, room number, if they had any allergies-nothing! No one signed anyone in or out, in the event of a fire etc how would you know how many you had without this information? The girl who was in charge seemed very bored and disinterested in the children. No organised activities, mostly seemed to wander around the playground/pool area.

To my horror whilst I was at the playground with my children I witnessed one of the younger children(4 years old) go missing. Her parents had dropped her at the club and when her aunt returned to pick her up early they realised she'd gone missing. The girl in charge stated that she hadn't realised the child was in kids club? Luckily we found her quickly wandering around by the pool. It could have been a very different outcome!

Water park- The water park was fine, nothing to write home about. The snack bar here was ok, pizza chips etc although there must be a wasps nest in the vicinity as there were swarms of them everywhere which was difficult to eat around. The life guards were great with the kids, really kept on top of them. We didn't use it as much as I thought we would because the water was freezing cold but that's the time of year, not the hotels fault!

Cleaning staff and waitresses were really lovely and nothing was too much trouble for them. They worked very hard and I can't fault them. They were friendly and chatty, always smiling.

All in all I was extremely disappointed with my holiday. We paid over the odds to go in half term and in return got fewer services than were promised. I understand that Rhodes may close down in October and we accepted that most places outside the hotel weren't open. But when you have been told the hotel itself will still be providing the same standards all year round and you find out it doesn't it's very very annoying. I felt that the hotel management just wanted us out of the way so they could close for the winter.

Where do I start?
1. Food - it was terrible, most nights we were served the same food over and over again and there was no themed nights as advertised, the fish was hard, the veg was cold , the meat was dry and cooked to death and everything was bland. It was so obvious they were getting rid of their stock and giving us the old stuff.. Shame on you..
2. Entertainment - it was minimal and didn't start until 8.45pm with a kids disco for 20 mins, which was the only bit my 5 and 6 yr old enjoyed , the rest was bingo and karaoke so our children were bored.. And so were we. Also when it rained during the day there was nothing for anyone to do .. Very poor ....
3. Hotel facilities - this is the only hotel I have been to that doesn't have a sky sports tv .. And I know why .. After speaking with the staff they informed me that the 'king Arthur's sports bar we kept seeing advertised around the hotel is owned by a relative of the hotel owners , so of course they were wanting you to go to his bar down the road and pay for drinks there... That is disgraceful sun palace. Incidentally the staff were excellent but they were all fed up with how they were treated and all told me they weren't coming back next season. One of them told me how the management took their tip box and used the money to buy new spoons..

This being an AI holiday i thought meant everything was included.. how wrong i was .. you are charged $30 for useing the room safe, $6 an hour for the wifi, and on your 1 time special trip to the ala-carte resturant if you want the decent wine instead of the vigegar they normally give you .. thats another $18 please..!!

By the end of the holiday we generally felt like we were in their way as they were closing down bars and putting away sun beds etc around us .. We still had 4 days left!
