Just back from Phevos Villa in Santorini - what an amazing island and the best place to stay was at Phevos Villa. Georgios and Anna are the most lovely owners of anywhere we have ever stayed in Greece and Cyprus. Their son Yacob is a great lad who made tasty omelettes and was great with all our kids xxx Their daughter Theoni is the sweetest amazing young women who laughs and squeals at Greek music and we miss her smile. I also miss my cuddles with Pitsi, Looby, the pups BB and Bella and the cat. Thank you all for making our holiday extra special.
The rooms are standard size and clean, beds were comfy. You get a free safe! Maria cleaned every day and provided clean bedding and towels regularly. We had two rooms for a family of 5 (3 primary school kids). The kitchens each had a kettle and plug-in cooking hob but we ate out so never used any appliances except one of the kettles, all other equipment was standard for Greek self catering holidays. A clean tea-towel and washing-up liquid was also provided which was a bonus. The bathroom was functional and clean, toilet roll was always provided along with hand wash at the basin which is unusual, there was also a clean bath mat. There are lots of extras given at Phevos which we've never had at other apartments. The 3 males in our party found the shower fine but my daughter and I did struggle with the slow water pressure as we have long hair but with water based shampoos, adjustments to the cold tap when needed, we did okay. We didn't use the aircon as we didn't need it. The temperature in Santorini was much more pleasurable than the 45+ in Rhodes and Cyprus which we've had in July/Aug previously.
The swimming pool is very very clean and one of the biggest in Perissa. There were always sun loungers available any time of the day. The pool side is clean and the bar is great for all your drinks, cheese and ham toasties (my kids loved these) and omelettes. George often shared watermelon and grapes with us from his own land which were delicious. The kids loved the Jacuzzi at the shallow end and that the pool went down to 2.4 meters, excellent for diving. They all improved their swimming and snorkelling in that pool.
George and Anna put on a barbecue at the Phevos on Fridays if there are enough takers - do it, the food is amazing especially for only 10 Euros.
Buy yourself a glass of George's home made wine - it's amazing. Making this years strong wine with George and Yacob was an amazing experience; crushing grapes with our feet.
We stayed away from Perissa Beach as it seemed a big drop from shoreline to water. We did go to Caldera Beach which was extremely rough but we were really there for my husband and 2 sons to go and feed the fish in the Caldera with Santorini Dive. If you want to dive, go with these chaps, they are so friendly and very professional but also lots of fun. They took exceptional care of my two boys. They have an office along the main strip. If you have transport go to the airport and find Monolithos Beach which is excellent for families as very shallow (lots of grass like seaweed).
Eating: there are lots of places to eat on the main strip but we went back to the same place five times - The Finikia is a great place for fast food and traditional Greek. The owner, Elie is the coolest guy and the bar guy Joe was great with the kids, he makes great puddings and milkshakes which the kids loved. The chef makes the most amazing Beef Stifado and the portions are big. The pizzas are also fabulous. Order Sex on Beach from Elie - beautiful!!
There is lots to see in Santorini and I would recommend hiring a vehicle. Driving was less hair-raising than some Med islands. Beware if you park at Athinios Port as the signs are not always clear and you will get an 80 Euro fine. You can pay this yourself at half the price at Piraeus Bank which is along the main road to Thira. The car park is up an old dirt track before the restaurants and looks like it's private. Oia is an amazing place and Thira is great but best to go on Sunday as less cruise ships port. We took the cable car down (great experience) and took the Donkeys/Mules back up. This is a hair-raising experience, you will get wedged between other donkeys and watch your legs on the walls. It is a long ride but my daughter loved it. 5 Euros each. The cruises are brilliant to the caldera, we went with King Thira who charge 30 Euros for adults and older children and 15 Euros for younger children each. It is very worth it, we were gone from 11am-6.30pm (goes from Athinios Port). It sails to the volcano to walk around and the spring to swim in. The visit to the Island Thirasia was our highlight of the trip. Clear waters and tasty Gyros Pita. The atmosphere here makes you relax, an island of tranquillity - amazing place.
The people in Santorini are very friendly and generous people.
