“Splendid hotel at perfect location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2012

I stayed at the gardenia hotel together with my wife for one week in August 2012. We enjoyed our holliday and can recommend this hotel to others. We travelled with Apollo from Norway and this two star hotel is located 300 m from one of the best beaches on Santorini near a cluster of good restaurants. The hotel is very clean and the Italian-Greek staff is very friendly and helpful, and does not mind at all for guests to stop and chat for a few minutes when entering or leaving the hotel, shares willingly there local knowledge of Santorini. We felt very comfortable and at ease living at Gardenia.

There are several rentals of Motos, Mopeds, four wheel MC:s and cars nearby, as well as other tour operator for boat trips as well as several good restaurants. A local bus stop with good communication is also within 5 min walk from the hotel. Location is superb!

The beach is volcanic sand so yes it does get warm in the sun, but there are wooden trails to get you within 10 m of the sea. The grass is NOT greaner elsewhere. Even the "red beach" and the "white beach" has volcanic sand, only with a red or white mountain behind, which must be made very clear. We recommend you to turn left when you arrive at the beach and walk 5-10 min along it until you arrive at the base of the mountain. Good sand beach with the best snorkling and many showers exist there. There is were families with children go.

Due to all tourists visiting Santorini (and its increase in water consumption) the grounbd water level is low, which results in infiltration of sea water. This is a general problem on Santorini, and the water was somewhat salty in the shower in our room. No problem for us, but if you are sensitive to these things, be informed at the planning stage of your trip.

About the music, we read about before coming here? We lived Saturday - Thursday and did not hear anything. On Friday the music came on from the waterland next to the hotel. Was it loud? No. We were not bothered, and it stoped well before we were going to slep.

Is it safe or advisable to visit Santorini considering the debt crisis? Fewer tourists arrive in Santorini than before the crisis, which means it is not crowded and the tour operators offer sweat deals to compete for the few tourists that exist. We took a volcano trip for six hours including bathing in hot springs, tour of the volcano, snorkling in extremely blue and clear water (the movie Le Grand Bleu was shot on an island nearby). For the price of 17 Euro / person. Before arriving we read about such trips for 40-50 Euro / person.

Furthermore the ambience is surpricingly relaxed, it took less than 24 h until both of us came into 100% vaccation mode upon arrival. The traffic (with 50+ nationalities on the rudimentary roads) is chaotic, but there is no aggresion, no jumping the horn or showing the finger. I have never experienced something like this before!

We stayed in room 8 and enclose pictures of the view from our balcony. Right in front a ranger backyard in the form of an abandoned construction site. It may not look so great but after 16-17 h we spent nice afternoons and evenings there. One easy and cheap way to improve the hotel would be to upgrade the chairs on the balcony to comfortable arm chairs or sun chairs. The main reason we went inside was because chairs were not so comfortable.

We had a wonderful week on Santorini, and recommend others to visit also!

chose this hotel due to good reviews. first room number 15 had a shared balcony, however this was a walkway to two other apts. so nowhere to dry towels or swim wear and had to eat breakfast in apt. we asked to move because the air con was rubbish. rep and hotel staff were brilliant and we changed room to number 29, had a balcony and good air con. not all rooms have hairdryers, air con can be good or bad (talk around the pool) balconys can be large, small or non exsistant. staff good, towells changed daily, sheets changed every other day. apts and pool spotless.lack of food choice at pool bar for a two week stay. always found sunbeds and we stayed 3/7/12 for two weeks. perissa beach is gritty not black sand. bars and tavernas on main road beers 2euros & cocktails 3euros cheaper than beach tavernas beers 3euros & cocktails 5euros. food was all good. although we had a great holiday i couln't reccomend this hotel due to difference in rooms/apts.

Returned yesterday after two weeks at Gardenia.Booked on the strength of glowing reviews,a mistake. The hotel situated about 300 metres from the beach, opposite a dirt & very dusty car park,(like a fog at times when the wind got up}adjacent to the water park,(very loud music 10am to 10pm}.The Gardenia is circa 1992,now showing it,s age. Some paint has been done recently,a refurb is overdue. We were in room 18,overlooking the road & car park. Not a bad size room, the window & shutters could not be closed due to age & distortion, same with the balcony doors & shutters.Chrome taps in the bathroom were coverd in green mould, hand held shower was a bit awkward.Pool very clean, shame about the loungers,in need of repair & cleaning, snack bar food, not much choice. All local restaurants were good. Will not stay at Gardenia again.

Room Tip: Best rooms are pool side, via Manos.

Wasn't our first choice but Thomas Cook persuaded us to book and we are glad they did. Small hotel with quite basic rooms but couldn't fault it. The rooms were the cleanest we have ever stayed in - towels changed every day (even when we hadn't used them all) and sheets every other day. We went self-catering and the kitchen facilities were minimal but no worse than any other Greek hotel/apartment we've stayed in but to be honest if it’s not too much more expensive I'd go B&B next time then you can have either as you still have the same room with S/C facilities. It has a huge pool with plenty of sunbeds - not once did we struggle to get a bed whatever time of the day we got there and it’s particularly good as one side has shade from palm trees and straw umbrellas. There is also a pool bar if you want a drink, can't comment on the food as only had a sandwich there on our first day otherwise we were out or had lunch in our room. All the rooms vary in the number of beds - we had a double and a single (for 2 of us), some had just a double and the one under us had a double and two singles so all different but do watch as you get charged under occupancy. Also be aware of the balconies. We'd seen the photos on Trip Advisor and were looking forward to a large balcony with comfortable furniture but ours was very small just about big enough for the two of us with very uncomfortable black metal chairs (got very hot in the sun) but at least they provide a washing line on there. As for choice of room? I'd always pick an upper floor, for privacy although the lower ones have bigger balconies, with pool view so you overlook the pool and the mountainous back drop. We chose a `sea view` which we got over the roofs of the other buildings around but it was on the corner of the building so was on the road side. The road isn't busy but every morning at 5am we were woken up by the dustmen arriving but at least our balcony was private a number of the others overlooked each other. Also found the Water Park was noisy during the day as the music was very loud luckily in closed at 10.30 pm so not a probelm at night. Loved the shutters though as kept it dark for sleeping and cool during the day. Another good point was that it is was in easy reach of the beach - a few minutes’ walk down the road. A few minutes’ walk the other way (passed Gods Garden Restaurant - never ate there as too close) and you are on the main road running through the village with all the restaurants, bars and small supermarkets. We made the mistake of heading for the beach road to eat the first few nights not realising how much more (& cheaper) there is on the main road. It is also close to the bus stop to Thira and about 5-10 minutes to the Big Coop (best and biggest supermarket in the village) and one of the two great bakeries, the post office for stamps is also right next to the Coop. Watch out for the bakery - bet you won't be able to walk away without buying more than bread - you name it they sell it 24/7! There is a laundry at the top of the road but didn't use it as very expensive. There is also a number of car hire/travel places around - not worth shopping around as they all sell the same for pretty much the same price (much cheaper than the reps prices) although we did hire our car through our rep as all the places in Perissa wanted to charge a high excess (up to 400 euros for jeep) so we went with Avis and had no excess but cost us twice as much. To be honest the roads are so good over there we needed have worried about any damage on the car. Places to visit on the island: wouldn't recommend Thira as very pretentious & expensive. Too geared to the 100s of cruise ship passengers disembarking every day. Like Oia but again very busy. Our favourite sunset spot was Santos winery, favourite beach Vouvoulos - great little traditional taverna there but need a car to get there as local buses all go in and out of Thira (and get packed). Finally can’t fault the staff at the Gardenia couldn’t be more helpful and friendly so would stay at the Gardenia again but not sure I’d want to visit Santorini again – as they say `been there got the T-shirt`. If you want to go the Cyclades go to Naxos instead much quieter, cheaper and more traditional

Room Tip: Choose an upper floor room with pool view as they are quieter although some aren't very private...

Second time we have stayed here and would not consider another hotel if we returned to Santorini. Staff are great, rooms are simple but very clean. The pool is great and the location is just right for eberything that the resort has to offer.
