“Loved the Cretan Hospitality!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2014

I love Panos, who is the owner of Mythos. He was a lot of fun, always happy, and couldn't do enough to make you happy. He is what Cretan hospitality is known for. He serves up a hardy breakfast which is great if you have a hangover, or if you just want to relax and enjoy the morning.

The location was great, it is in between the upper village and the main square of Platanias, which are both within a 3-5 minute walking time. There are a multitude of restaurants and traditional Tavernas to choose from. The beach is about a 5 minute walk and has sun beds for rent, or you can take your own towel and beach mat. If you aren't a fan of the beach the hotel has a really nice swimming pool and bar. If you are interested in traveling to other parts of Crete, the buses pick up in the square daily, and run 24 hours to Chania in the summer. Elafonisi is a must see! I would highly recommend taking the bus as the roads are narrow and very high. You can get a bus schedule at the Chania bus station for all of the buses.

If you want nightlife, they have something going on the square, or at the beach clubs every night. The hotel is far enough away that you can't hear any noise so it doesn't affect your sleep. There is also a super market in the square and a mini market across the street from Mythos if you need to pick up some items. You have everything you need within walking distance which is important to me because I don't want to drive while I am on vacation.

The rooms are very big with a separate living room, bedroom, and kitchenette. The bedroom has a private balcony attached with a view of the mountains and sea. The rooms and the hotel grounds are kept very clean. I felt like I was in an apartment, not a hotel room. The rooms are by far the best value I have found on my trip. He has some really cute toys and gift shop in the reception area if you need to take a souvenir back home.

I had a great time and absolutely loved Crete!!! I will definitely be back!

We have stayed at the hotel for 4 nights. The apartment itself is really spacious and quite clean (accept 1 big cockroach we found one night), close to main street and few nice Taverna's. Its located on Top of the little Hill, however it was difficult to find for us as there are no signs in the main street. We had to ask in few different shops until they told us the right directions.
Before coming please let the owner known when you are coming as when we arrived there was no one in hotel. No big deal as you can call the owner, he arrive in about 20 minutes. Also, make sure that AIR CONDITIONING is included in a price. When we arrived we where told that its not included in our price and we have to pay 7 eur per night. However, he said he can make us a deal for 20 eur for all the nights. I have checked most of hotel booking sites and NONE of them state that air conditioning is not included in the price. Terms and conditions does not indicate this. We felt we were kind of cheated on this one. With +30 degrees believe you need air conditioning especially in the nights.
The owner seems really laid back and careless about his business. It looked that he is looking for a quick, easy cash, without any effort. We have asked for breakfast at 8am as we wanted to travel around before heat goes up the second morning. However, he made such expressions that we had to feel guilty for asking it. The following day a sign that breakfast is served only from 9-11 appeared. I have asked for breakfast at 8am again as we had to leave early to catch a flight home the last morning. His response was qoute: "I'll do it, but you write good review for me". Sorry but you have to deserve good review....
Even though only couple rooms were occupied during our stay and it looked kind of empty, there was always someone from the outside at the pool/bar. A guy and 2 Polish girls arrived one day and seems they had the time of their life, screaming and shouting, while the owner did not say a word. The other night he was having a BBQ what seemed to me with his mates with quite a bit of alcohol.
Shortly, apartments are decent, however you have to look and than 'beg' for owner to get anything you should have in any other place.
A little bit respect to the hotel guest and NO FRIENDS zone would make a difference. Also, this is not the place if you looking for a relaxing, quite stay.

Sunset Restaurant is a must visit place to eat, its just 1 min from hotel on top of the Hill. Fantastic home made food and, friendliest owner ever. Restaurant has fantastic views and most beautiful sunsets. We ended up having all our dinners in this place.

we stayed in Mythos for a week in July 2011. Had the best time ever, clean, fresh and realy good service, the owner is a very gentle and service minded person.
The hotel is not far from the centrum, and a lot of nice restaurantes close by.
We couldn´t stay away, so we went back for a week in october :)
Look forward to spend another week in June 2012.

I stayed at Mythos in July 2011. As it is a 2-star hotel I did not have very high expectations, but I must say for the price I payed it is an absolute gem!

The only negatives: there was a litte wear and tear in the aparment, like some tiles in the bathroom being chipped, but since the apartment was kept spotlessly clean this did not bother me at all. The breakfast wasn't that fun, only ate there 2 days, but found a delightful bakery in the main street where I picked up breakfast and some goodies when going to the beach. The internet access was a bit unreliable, but who needs to be by the computer if you are on holiday in Creete???

You need to be prepared that there is usually no staff at the reception desk, but this was really not a problem as you could always find the staff at the bar, and they were more that willing to help with any questions you might have, and they always went above and beyond. One evening the manager even came to knock on my door to answer a question that another member of staff could not answer! I got a real family vibe from the staff, so friendly and chatty, even the ones that did not speak English, a smile and some improvised sign language goes a long way :)

The location is perfect! Very quiet surronding, but still less that 5 min to the main street and the beach 10 minutes to the beach. The hill up to the hotel is really no problem if you do not have any impairements, it was 48 degrees Celsius when I was there, but I didn't break a sweat walking up the hill.

From the main street there are very convenient and cheap bus services to Chania town (and the villages along the route).

The beach is a nice sand beach, nothing out of the ordinary, but relly nice. I used to go to the east end of the beach where it was nice and quiet with mostly older folks. Be prepared that they charge for the sunbeds along the whole beach, luckily since I was there alone they didn't charge me :)

I highly recommend Mythos, and I am really sorry that the travel agent in booked through no longer has package deals to Mythos - otherwise I would return over and over again!

Have just returned from an 11 day stay at the Mythos Platanias apartments and cannot recommend it highly enough. The apartment was spacious & immaculately clean [apart from Sundays, room is serviced daily] with a lovely balcony. The shower doesn't have a curtain but until very recently this was the norm in Greece, so wasn't a difficulty to us. And the pool area was absolutely gorgeous which was a bonus!! The property is halfway up the hill to the old town of Platanias and there's plenty of parking for guests around the back of the apartments. The staff were all friendly & helpful and the atmosphere around the complex was very relaxing .............. just what was needed. If you're looking for a friendly, relaxing, good quality apartment in a quieter part of town then this is the place for you.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 102 which was in a perfect location, would recommend it.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2011

My partner and I stayed at the Mythos Hotel Apartments for 7 nights last summer as part of a package holiday through Thomson. Our experience was very pleasant and if we return to Crete we will probably stay there again!

The apartment consisted of a front room with sofas, a writing desk, a large dining table and a (very) small kitchenette, and the bedroom, which had two beds, a large wardrobe, another writing table and a small balcony. The bathroom adjoined the bedroom. The floor was tiled throughout. The furniture was in good condition, the mattresses were firm but comfortable, and there were some extra blankets and pillows in the wardrobe if needed.

The bathroom was small and like most Greek bathrooms, there was no curtain or other partition around the shower, so the floor in the bathroom (not to mention the toilet seat) did get very wet whenever we showered; that being said, the weather was extremely dry and there was a drain in the middle of the floor, so the water drained/evaporated quickly.

The balcony was very small and looked out over the pool and down the hillside towards the bay. It afforded some nice views and was pleasant in the evenings, when the breeze rolled in.

The kitchenette was also quite small, but stocked with plenty of dishes, cookware and silverware, as well as a hob, a refrigerator, a kettle and a toaster - more than enough to be going on with on a self-catering holiday! We couldn't exactly make a 4-star meal in it, but then we only "self-catered" breakfast and lunch, and even then not every day. It was more than adequate to our needs.

The room was cleaned and made-up daily. We chose to re-use our towels, but on the occasions when we left them on the floor, fresh ones were promptly provided.

We rented a safe for a small deposit (I think about EUR 5.00/night, definitely worth it for storing valuables) and air-conditioning as well. The A/C was a flat rate for the whole stay, I forget how much - fewer than EUR 50.00, though, and an absolute godsend in June. The weather was sunny and bright and HOT, HOT, HOT, so the need for A/C was non-negotiable! It powered up quickly and could cool the whole apartment down within 20 minutes. Being tiled, the apartment stayed cool for a while after the A/C was switched off, but we did spend more time with it on than off (and having paid a flat amount, we weren't charged based on usage).

We used the apartment as a base for independent exploration, so can't comment on the management, but we certainly never had any issues with them. Though there were a fair few people at the hotel (young couples, families with small children/teenagers, OAPs), it was very quiet at night and even during the day. There was some "pool noise" from the children, but this wasn't too bothersome and their parents had generally dried them off and taken them elsewhere by evening.

The location was, for our needs, practically perfect. Platanias is not a thing of beauty and a joy forever, but it is very well connected to the rest of Crete and has all the amenities a tourist could require. There are supermarkets, pharmacies, proper restaurants, fast-food joints, ice-cream parlours, beach-gear and souvenir shops galore, and a very nice soft sand beach all within a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Walk down the hillside and you find yourself at the central bus-stop for Platanias - the ticketing office is right there, and the staff are very helpful. We went to Heraklion (to see Knossos), Chania and Paleochora from Platanias. The bus service (KTEL) is frankly a dream: the coaches are comfortable and air-conditioned, the service runs perfectly to time, and detailed timetables can be checked in advance on the KTEL website. Our local council could learn a thing or two (hundred) from the Cretan bus service!!

Speaking of the hillside - everyone here seems to - yes, the hill is quite steep, and in the midsummer heat it can be a bit taxing. However the hotel porters your luggage from the bottom to the top and back again at the beginning and end of your stay, so really the only heavy thing to haul along is your own body! While the hill makes this location less-than-ideal for elderly or disabled guests, it is NOT the horrible obstacle some reviews portray and it would certainly not stop us from returning to the hotel.

All in all, the Mythos Hotel Apartments were clean, comfortable, centrally-located for amenities, in a town well-connected to the rest of Crete, and they represented excellent value for money for our trip. We would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Crete on a budget, looking for basic but good accommodation in an area well situated for sightseeing around the island.

We went with our two children for two weeks, apartments were spotless, maid service 6 days a week, pool and pool area was immacualte, Panos the owner was the perfect host , nothing was too much trouble, ,we did find the whole resort was a little expensive but the food at the Mythos was excellent value, fresh and delicious. The hill was not as bad as people make out, not reccomended for somebody with walking difficulties, but this is pointed out morethan once in the brochure and the travel agents. All in all we had a fabulous holiday, with something different to do every day, beautiful beaches , especially diamond beach and the magnifacent Elofinisi , we look forward to returning this year .
