A little late writing this review, but we feel we owe one to the staff at the Amazones Village Suites, as overall we had a lovely time.
We booked online through Travelzoo. Everything went according to plan, and we felt we definitely got good value for money.
Upon arrival we were pleasantly surprised by the view provided by the surrounding area, as the suites are placed below some mountains and overlooking the sea and the towns/villages of Piskopiano and Hersonissos. We enjoyed the view every time we were out at the poolside for dining or swimming/sunbathing. In terms of the surrounding area there were plenty of shops to visits, places to eat and drink (most of those in Hersonissos were right by the sea, so you usually had a great view). We were only there for a week so we didn't see a lot of the island.
We were generally pleased with our suite, which was of a decent size for two people. In a stay that we overall greatly enjoyed, a couple of things in our room were a problem for us, such as how wet the bathroom would get because of the positioning of the shower head and how the bath fit against the wall, plus there was no window and the extractor fan seemed to struggle with venting the bathroom. We would always get fresh towels and bath mats if we left them down, however, which we thought was great. There was also the small matter of not having a full-length curtain over the front room window. We did not have air-con, which we admittedly took for granted, but it wasn't necessary in the suite we were in, since it was shaded enough that it was always cool, in particular if we went out and left the curtains in the bedroom drawn all day. Our room was cleaned every day barring Sunday which was a day off for the cleaners, and the room was always clean and tidy after their visits. We were very pleased with this.
Cannot comment on the spa/gym as we did not try it out.
Food was pretty good overall. Breakfast was mainly Greek/continental, with plenty of bread, fruit, honey, Greek yogurt, cereal, salad and cold meat. Great if it's your sort of thing and we enjoyed it- some might want a fry up, but this isn't an English B&B. There was usually scrambled eggs as a hot option, sometimes with beans, and on one occasion there was sausage and bacon. Lunch/snacks could be purchased throughout the afternoon- there was plenty to choose from and when we were there for lunch we enjoyed it. Dinner was from a set menu which consisted of good, home-cooked food. We were at times a little disappointed by portion sizes but we didn't go hungry- we just wanted more because we enjoyed it. We only recall one meal we didn't enjoy, which was a pasta bolognese seemed a bit bland to our liking, but to each their own, it was otherwise good, and we were pleasantly surprised by desert on a couple of evenings.
The staff were always friendly and helpful. In particular we were please with how helpful they were when it came to booking excursions. Our "main" excursion of the week was to the island of Spinalonga, which was organised for us, no trouble at all. Caterina, Caroline and Christos were always friendly, talkative and always up for a conversation. They always smiled when they were not busying about- there were quite a few people staying while we were there and the staff worked hard. Ocassionally we had to wait a little longer than we would have expected for food and/or drinks, but this was understandable given how busy it was, and it's not like we were in a rush to go anywhere- we were on holiday after all, and enjoyed being there.
All in all we really enjoyed our stay at the Amazones Village Suites. Many thanks to the staff. We would definitely come again should we ever return to Crete.
