“A wee gem of a place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

Just returned today (12th June 13 ) from this haven of tranquility, most relaxed holiday I've ever had. Family run apartments, and one of the most hospitable and welcoming places in Crete. I've never been to the same place twice for our holiday. As Arnie said " I'll be back". As for the village itself, it may be small but it has everything you need, never had a bad meal all week, and plenty of free Raki.

My stay in the Matheos Apartments was fantastic due to the kind hospitality of the owners , the location and very friendly atmosphere. The main highlights were:

1. The owners could not do enough to help during my check in as travel republic had made an error . However within minutes Helen had sorted everything and room was sorted very quickly .

2. The rooms are very clean and have everything you need. Very good air conditioned , modern furniture and comfortable beds and sheets

3. The pool area was very clean and there were plenty of sun beds

4. The apartments were unbelieveable value for money . You would nt get such value anywhere else.

I will definately be returning , thank you for a lovely stay.

The Matheos Apartments are the normal basic Greek rooms but spotlessly clean and well equipped. They are family run and Helen, George, Kostas and Katie are happy to do everything to make your holiday comfortable; you only have to ask! The property is on three levels, most of the studios being downstairs, with patios, with one on the same level as the bar and pool, and one upstairs, both with views of Hersonissos. Due to only being informed that I had requested low-floor accomodation, Helen had to re-jig her room allocations upon our arrival, as I have mobility problems and cannot manage stairs, and she was also happy to cook burgers and chips for us so we did not have to walk to find a taverna in the dark. The food in the snack bar was good and the BBQ nite was excellent and great fun. However, you do not feel under any pressure at all to be sociable. Depending on the mix of guests the bar can be very lively, until quite late at night, or quiet, and we had one week of each. The pool area, with sunbeds, is very pleasant. It is only a short walk into the village of Piskopiano with lots of tavernas to choose from, Hersonissos is reached by a long walk downhill and a taxi back is recommended at a cost of seven euros. We had a car and could go out every day but on the days when I stayed in, because the others in our group wanted to go to places where I could not walk about, it was delightful to have lunch by the pool. Our overriding memory of this holiday will be the friendliness of the owners and staff who were so welcoming and caring. I would certainly recommend the Matheos.

Room Tip: There are three apartments and one studio on the pool/bar level, one of which overlooks the pool are...

We stayed at the Matheos Apartments two years running in September, and have just booked again for this September. Excellent family run apartments, very clean and very nice rooms.
Helen, George and Kostas are the best of the best people, always happy to help. The village has an abundance of taverna's and bars to suit everyone's taste.

We stayed at the Matheos Apartments last October, and really enjoyed it there. The studios are quite basic, as is the norm for Greece, but well equipped, clean and comfortable. They are in a quiet spot, on the edge of the village, but only a couple of minutes walk from the shops and a very good selection of local restaurants. There is a bar, a small pool and a pleasant area for sun loungers around the pool. The owners are very helpful, and although everyone is very friendly, you can join in as much as you want to, without feeling forced to be sociable. Our apartment was on the same level as the bar, and we had a great view over Hersonnissos. The weather at that time of year was just right for us - not too hot, but still plenty of sun! The villages of Piskopiano and neighbouring Koutouloufari have a good selection of shops and restaurants, and it is a nice way to spend the evening strolling along the main street, after a meal or in search of one. We particularly enjoyed eating at David's - about 5 minutes away from the apartments. Here, you are given a list of dishes to tick the ones you want, and they appear in some sort of random order, so don't expect a main dish with chips, or whatever. - just eat them as they appear. The food is inexpensive and delicious, and on your first visit, it is all too easy to order too much, but you soon get the hang of it, but get there early, or be prepared to wait for a table, as it is popular with both locals and tourists. Also, in all the restaurants we tried, the wine has been produced by the owner and comes in a jug, but it is surprisingly drinkable and very cheap. Hersonissos is reached down quite a steep hill, which is OK on the way down, but you might want to budget for a taxi to take you back up to Piskopiano. In October, the season is pretty much over, and the waterfront bars and restuarants are starting to close up, but there is still a choice of places to eat and drink. If you want to visit places like Knossos or Aghios Nikolaos, there is a good bus service from Hersonnisos. Don't pay over the odds for an organised trip, because it is cheap and easy to travel by bus. To get to Knossos, just catch a bus to Heraklion bus station, then catch the bus from there to Knossos - Helen at the apartments will explain it to you. All in all, we had a great holiday, and would be happy to go back.

Yes indeed as many many other reviews have already said a true gem of a place. Helen George Kostas and the family make the Matheos Apartments a truly wonderful place to stay. It was my Mum that Helen fetched knitting needles (and a darning needle!) for. We booked last minute to celebrate Mum beating Cancer and at 83 she can be demanding. Helen and George made her stay a complete pleasure. Apartments are spotless and comfortable. More than adequate for the fussiest of folks. Bar area was a social pleasure and no effort was spared by these wonderful people to make our stay a great one. We checked in as strangers and quickly became friends. Top marks all the way round for Matheos.......all i can say is dont hesitate... go and see for yourself.. you wont be dissapointed. Thank you all for a wonderful stay!!! See you next year!!!

The Matheos Studios are in the tiny village of Piskopiano, which is set on the slopes of Mount Harakas. Despite its small size, the village is a bit of a foodie haven. There are plenty of tavernas a minute's walk from the studios, a lot of which have terraces with panoramic sea views. When you want to hit the sand, Hersonissos Beach is a 20-minute walk downhill. The complex has a friendly feel thanks to its owners George, Kosta and Helen, who go out of their way to make you feel welcome. They put on a weekly barbecue by the small pool.
