“Very comfortable and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

The hotel is perfectly situated in the centre of La Palud, right next to a good bar (it was a climbing holiday so bars are important!). The public areas of the hotel are nothing special but the rooms are well appointed (probably modernised), with comfortable beds and decent bathrooms.

We took half board and ate in the hotel restaurant. The food was good with a decent variety of food. The service was friendly and good. There were a few problems: the water in the egg boiler was not hot enough (10-15 mins for a 5 min egg), the water for the tea was similarly not hot enough, and the heating had been turned off for summer - we were there in May and it was cold! Still the heating was switched on for a couple of days.

A late arrival with no booking mid week. Friendly front desk, very relaxed (perhaps too relaxed but bear with them). Great location with its own bar restaurant, but also 3/4 others in village. Good spring board into the gorge but no direct views. Village is calm and feels off grid if that is what you are looking for. Rooms very clean and very smart for price of the area from what we checked out before. Balcony on our room with table and chairs. These guys have put cheerful paintings on walls which really helps to make the rooms feel complete. Parking easy and free.

The hotel is in an excellent location and I was pleased that I had booked. The room was good, but the bed was lumpy and really uncomfortable. However the bathroom was very well equiped and looked as though it had been decorated recently. The main thing that I found let the hotel down was the service in the restaurant especially. We were on the dinner bed and breakfast option and the waiter was very vague about the menu, it was hard to track him down to get another drink and overall it was a shame as it let the hotel down for me. Breakfast was ok. But although it was a buffet, no one was on duty and so tables hadn't been cleared. If the service had been better I would have been a lot happier.

We really enjoyed our night in this hotel. The room was spacious and the bathroom very well equipped. We liked the little balcony in our room. They provided a perfect parking area for our bicycles. The dinner was one of the best we had during our 3 weeks in France and the breakfast was nice too.
La Palud sur Verdon is a nice small village, well worth the stop.

This hotel may have the distinction of being the second best service I have ever received, However, it took a $1800 a night suite at the Intercontinental in Cairo to beat them.

We booked the dinner/breakfast included stay. Two wonderful dinners, my chicken cordon bleu was perfect. My wife really wanted lamb, and although it was not on the list, they came up with a lamb shank she just raved about. Our English speaking host, made certain that everything was looked after with no service missing and the bill? We exactly what I was quoted, despite drinks with dinner and an after dinner digestive.

It almost makes me want to find a reason to return. A perfect posting for my 50 review.

Room Tip: They looked to have two rooms with balconies overlooking the mountains that would have allowed for a...

No complaints about this hotel. It's off the main road so quiet. Beds are comfortable. He owners could be friendlier but didn't really matter. Great location for the gorges. I'd stay there again.

This was our second visit to hike the Sentier Martel in the Gorge du Verdon. We previously stayed at the somewhat grander Hotel des Gorges du Verdon in 2008 and had been satisfied at the time but unfavourable reviews here suggested things, and possibly the owners, had changed so we looked for other accommodation. There really isn't a lot of choice in this small town but it is THE place to be if you want to hike the sentier Martel (a 7 hour, 14 km amazing trail) otherwise you lose a lot of your day getting to La Maline (the start of the trail) and you really need a full day to appreciate and enjoy the majesty of this incredible natural wonder.

We were not at all disappointed with our relocation to Hotel Le Provence this visit. The setting is not as spectacular as the Hotel des Gorges du Verdon and while it is only a 2 star hotel it offers very good value and a warm and friendly welcome. This is a family run small hotel in a quiet location in the village. The rooms are simple but spotless and attractively decorated. We had requested a quiet room and were given one on the second floor at the end of the corridor with a terrace looking the valley. With no one above us and only one room beside it was perfectly silent and we slept well.

Breakfast is served buffet style (which is very efficient and essential when contemplating an early start to the day) in a pleasant room. There was ample food and variety, fresh fruit, yogourt, cereals, croissants, pastries and toast, even cheese and meat so that there is no problem stoking up for a good day long climb. Coffee was excellent with hot milk. Tea and chocolate were also available of course.

Dinner was better than expected both nights. The dining room is attractively decorated, warm and inviting. The food is not haute cuisine but good, honest country cooking and you will not leave the table hungry. There is an extensive appetizer buffet with a variety of delicious offerings, followed by home made soup if you wish, then a choice of main course (we were demi-pension but there is a more complete a la carte menu), and choice of dessert. Everything was good, service was friendly and prompt and there was a decent selection of local wines at reasonable prices.

What made our stay here truly memorable and worthy of submitting this review was Tomas (the owner's son). Normally visitors do the day long hike along the stunning sentier Martel from La Maline to Point Sublime where they take a local taxi, alone or in groups, back to their car at the starting point. On arrival we confirmed with Tomas that things still worked that way and that we had the phone number. We even had the opportunity to chat with one of the taxi drivers as he brought back a large group of German hikers who were staying at the hotel. So we were a bit disconcerted at the finish the next day when we were not able to connect with either of the taxis. (We still don't know what happened because normally the system works well). We called the hotel to see if they knew what was going on and when he learned we were stuck Tomas generously offered to come and pick us up and take us back to our car. (This at 6 pm, surely one of the busiest points of his day). My husband particularly enjoyed the ride along this spectacular but challenging road in a luxurious BMW SUV with someone who knew the road well at the wheel. I appreciated that he so amiably was prepared to rescue us. Merci Tomas we will never forget your generosity.

If you are going to La Palud to really experience the Gorge du Verdon and to do any of the many hikes this hotel is an excellent choice.

Room Tip: Rooms on second floor are quietest
