“Pleasant hotel, nice restuarant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Stayed on Monday night on way back to Tunnel. Nice town with fortified wall surrounding it. As Monday, did not find another restaurants open. Fortunately the food was good in the hotel. 3 courses for Euro 23. House wine Euro 9 for 50 cl. Breakfast very expensive at Euro 11 and we did not have it despite being encouraged heavily by owners on arrival and again in the morning. Owners miserable and charmless. Adjoining bar is nice inside but paid Euro 9 for 50cl of 3 Monts beer, outrageous. Liked the town.

I have awarded three stars as I was only one night here, on a Sunday, so I could not assess the restaurant. I promise I'll be back especially to do this. Otherwise, a somewhat sombre place in the public areas sphere and worn. Like an old lady without her make-up. Fané. However, the most important part, the guest rooms, is a different story. Well upgraded, good beds and linnens, great bathroom regrettably with bath instead of walk-in shower. Who needs a bathtub nowadays? The street is quiet and the bells remind me of the wonderful carillons of Holland: D.I.A. Stuff.

We found the owners extremely helpful and friendly and although the communal areas are a little dark and dingy, our bedrooms were light, bright and spotlessly clean. The beds were very comfortable and the bed-linen was of a very high quality. The large bathrooms with bath and shower were lovely, however my 80 year old mother-in-law was unable to climb into the bath to take a shower, so bear this in mind if you are elderly or disabled. No doubt if we had brought this to the owners attention, they would have made some other arrangements. The hotel is very well situated in the town and just a couple of minutes walk to a favourite restaurant, Le Breughel. I'm sure we will be returning to the lovely town of Bergues (a great stop-off on the way to Dunkirk or Calais) and would happily stay here again.

We recently stayed at this fantastic Logis de France whilst visiting Dunkirk nearby. It is situated in beautiful Bergues, which is well worth a visit on its own with a pretty canal running through the centre, typical country houses, a delightful square and the remains of what appear to be military structures, possibly a garrison, located at different parts of the town. There is plenty of parking outside the hotel, which overlooks an amazing church( do wander inside- it is beautiful). Warmly welcomed by our host, who spoke excellent English, we were directed to our triple room on the next floor. The corridors are full of character, and it gives the impression of being a very old building, although the decor in all the rooms is tastefully modern. Our bedroom was gorgeous- very elegant, very clean, lovely furnishings, warm and spacious, with a fantastic en-suite bath and shower room. Free toiletries and plenty of towels were provided. We would have liked to have had tea/coffee making facilities but these were not available. Everything else was perfect. The sheets on the beds smelt lovely, and the mattresses were very comfy- we all had a good night's sleep. In the late afternoon, we sat in the bar and enjoyed a beer- it is a great place to unwind, again very tastefully decorated. In the evening, we ate in their restaurant and the meal was delicious. We chose from the 23 euro menu( three courses). My husband and I had the mussels in cheese sauce, and our daughter had the seafood salad. We then between us chose dishes of beef, chicken, and a traditional recipe from Lille, then for dessert, we had the treble mini-pudding selection( creme brulee, chocolate mousse and pear tart) served on a pretty wooden platter with an espresso to accompany the food. We had a half bottle of wine and a pepsi, and the total bill came to 84 euros- very good value. Service was excellent, and there were plenty of other diners there. In the morning, we had the breakfast which was buffet style- fruits, cereals, cheeses, meats, eggs, a variety of breads, croissants and cake, plus juices and as much tea and coffee as we could drink. This was priced at 11 euros each. I would just advise you to go to breakfast early, as once some items had gone, they were not replenished, so people who came down quite late were missing out. This is a real little gem, and we were so happy to have discovered it. Highly recommended.

All you could want in a hotel by the boarder. The town is lovely with its superb clock tower and gorgeous square or place surrounded by bars' restaurants and shops. The hotel is run by the most friendly of staff and the owner is proud to speak English and correct my French which is great. Food in the restaurant is well prepared from fresh ingredient and served by competent and knowledgable waiting staff. A great find.

A newly renovated superior room in the centre of a walled town, convenient for exploring the Nord/Pas de Calais. An atmospheric restaurant that would be better to upmarket itself, but an altogether satisfactory dining experience. Near the Dunkirk ferry port and accessible for Western Front Battlefields. It clicks the boxes for cleanliness, welcoming, atmosphere and historic.
