“It's all just fine...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2012

Look, it's a basic hotel but all clean with comfortble beds and good food in the restaurant. Sure, there are other hotels, but for the price it's perfectly acceptable.

Don't plan on a long lie in as the church bells opposite are a very effective alarm!

We spent a great night here. Room O.K. Dinner excellent and good value: breakfast good.
We would certainly use it again for an overnight stop. The area felt welcoming and safe; free parking on square outside. This hotel seemed to epitomize the excellent past values of the Logis de France, which unfortunately seem to be disappearing elsewhere.

Room Tip: Lots of rooms, only saw one.

We frequently stay in hotels in the Logis de France group, and usually these are fine - reasonable prices, clean and comfortable, & good food and service.

Although the Au Tonnelier is clean and comfortable, the staff have a way of making you feel totally valueless as a customer. The focus is most definitely not on good customer service (example: the bar was closed, and the front doors were shut AND LOCKED at 9.30pm!)

A distinct lack of a warm welcome will ensure we never ever stay here again.

Room Tip: Book another hotel!

This hotel does not profess to be anythinh more than a 2* but we thought it offered excellent value for money. Friendly, clean and comfortable - its a shame the restaurant was closed but it was wet November night so who could blame them! The owner happily directed us to an excellent restaurant just a couple of hundred yards up the road.

The breakfast in the warm cosy conservatory, was one of the better continental breakfasts I have had!

1/ The room:
Very basic but then for 59 Euros the night, you cannot expect much although the huge success of the movie "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" surely boosted the prices in this hotel!! The bed was comfortable but we hated the long narrow useless pillow. Luckily there were 2 other "normal" pillows in the closet that we used. There is no coffee or tea in the room and there is no iron either which is a real problem when you need to attend a wedding (one of the staff ironed the shirt behind the reception). The shower has no curtain, just a small protection made of glass, therefore, expect lots of water on the bathroom floor after your shower even if you pay attention. There are not enough towels in the bathroom and there are way too small and tired looking. No toiletries at all other than a tiny basic soap bar expected to last for several days... so bring your own! No paper tissues in the bathroom either (had to buy some at the nearby supermarket). The walls are as thick as paper so you will most likely hear your neighbour whistling in the shower or... shave! The bells of the church are ringing quite often but it did not bother us. There is no lift and the room # 26 is the only one located on the ground floor (for people with reduced mobility or in a wheelchair). So be ready to go up the flight of stairs with your suitcases... The best room is by far the # 25 at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor (similar to a suite).

2/ The breakfast:
Nicely located in the veranda at the back of the hotel, the breakfast is quite nice for 11 Euros and you find everything from eggs to ham to fruits to juices. An odd practice consists to bring you the croissants (one per person) warmed up directly at your table. Everything else is self service which is quite nice. The yoghurts were excellent and locally made at a nearby farm but the French baguette was not fresh at all which is a big no-no in France!!

3/ Location:
A 20-mn drive from the Dunkirk ferry but it is difficult to find the hotel because of the odd configuration of the streets in Bergues. There are 2 huge roundabouts and in the middle of them are churches and several streets are crossing paths with each other so quite confusing. Once in Bergues, the best thing to locate the hotel is follow the white signs "Eglise St-Martin" written in italic. At some point, you will face the St-Martin church and the hotel is in the curve on the right handside of the church. There is no parking spot reserved for the hotel, you just have to try your luck. Outside the hotel, there is a sign that says "4 Euros per night for parking" but parking is free everywhere around so don't even bother.

4/ What we liked best:
. Complimentary wireless Internet at the hotel
. The big bathroom
. The village of Bergues is a charming walled quaint little place to discover... by walking. Leave the car at the hotel (so you are sure someone won't take your space). Have a drink at "Le Cafe de la Poste" where you will be very warmly welcomed by Madame Debergue (literally "the woman from Bergues"!) who will tell you everything you always wanted to know about that movie, "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis".
. The reviews about the hotel restaurant were so bad that we did not even try it and we did well as there are a few nice places in the village that are all a just 5-minute walk from the hotel. For instance, "Au Cornet d'Or" was a very pleasant surprise (dress up if you want to go there in the evening). "Le Bruegel" seems nice too (a house built in 1597 with blue-framed windows and entrance door) but we did not have the time to go there.

5/ What we liked the least:
. The most unfriendly attitude of the owner who does not give a damn about you and never smiles. Staff barely look at you or acknoledges you. As we were there for a wedding, we tried to get a special pricing as 90% of the hotel was booked for the wedding. The owner agreed to "upgrade" us but as our room was very basic, we were wondering where the "upgrade" was...

Maybe I should have read some of the reviews before I booked this hotel, because I would never have gone there. On first arriving, we thought it had a certain French rustic charm, but it quickly transpired that the standard of the room was really poor. All the workmanship was of the poorest quality, right down to the curtains being too short for the window, which meant street lights shining into our eyes all night. Still, we thought that a nice meal in the hotel restaurant would make up for the room. Oh no ! My sea bass fillet was grey, and completely curled up where it had been microwaved. This was served with tinned mushrooms and boil in the bag rice, and all for a shocking 15 euros.
The buffet breakfast was no better, and at 11 euros per person was nothing short of daylight robbery. I was very surprised to see there was no croissants in the buffet, but when the surly waitress finally brought some out they were stale.
Visit the lovely town of Bergues by all means, but find somewhere else to stay.
