“Absolutely amazing, and what a wonderful host!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2010

This place was absolutely beautiful - designed with so much care and attention to detail by the owner. Our room was very cute and clean, and the balcony with the view of trees and mountains was very nice. The owner is absolutely wonderful, serving up bottles of wine for extremely reasonable prices, along with DELICIOUS cheese and sausages. All while putting on a lovely Andrea Bocelli DVD, which isn't usually our thing, but was wonderful and relaxing. The only negative is the roosters that live on the property, who crow at all hours of the night/morning. Closing the balcony doors/windows at night might be in order for light sleepers. :)

My wife and I had the extreme pleasure of staying at Casa Di Pietra in early October and loved it! Luis is the consummate host, he treats you better than you treat yourself, genially caring for his guests with no efforts spared to ensure their stay is a pleasant experience.
As for the the lodge and rooms...ENCHANTING. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the attention to detail is all around you. You simple could not do better than Luis, his family and Casa Di Pietra when in El Valle. Five Stars with a very Personable Presentation!

Casa Di Pietra was a great suggestion that far exceeded expectations. Rundown:

Getting There: Easy - it is off the main road leading into El Valle. It was about a 1.7 hour drive from Panama City - the roads are great.

Location: The location in El Valle was perfect - you could walk to the village and some of the attractions. We drove to Santa Clara beach one day - not bad at all - about 40-45 minutes. A few minutes drive from everything in El Valle you can't walk to.

Grounds/Inn: The Inn was excellent and the hosts could not be kinder or more wonderful people. The grounds of the Inn are immaculate and the views from the balconies are great. The rooms come w/ french doors that were open each night - perfect way to sleep. There is a ceiling fan in each room and the bathrooms are well appointed, spacious, and very clean. The bed was very comfortable. It is an extremely quite setting that is perfect for relaxing - given that both of us work in fairly high pressured professions this was the best way to unwind. The grounds also have high speed internet - we didn't use it but if you absolutely have to bring work w/ you - you can be connected. In the same vain, and sadly, - cell phones and data service work perfectly in El Valle.

Food: The breakfast each morning was fresh and very well done - fresh fruits, juice, coffee, eggs, pancakes (one morning), and a traditional Costa Rican breakfast (the other morning). We had the dinner option one night and it was by far the best meal we had in El Valle - salad w/ a balsamic vinegar dressing, leek soup, shrimp and risotto, and an ice cream desert w/ coffee liquor - it was completely prepared by scratch and w/ fresh herbs. The setting for the dinner (behind the in on the stone porch) was perfect. Luis also has a nice selection of wine and drink - and a nice cigar selection in his humidor - it is not included but very reasonable and a better way to unwind than walking into the village.

Caveats: Bring cash, the Casa does not take credit cards - we were prepared for it so it was not a big deal but since people use their credit cards to buy a Coke today it is worth the heads up. I only gave the sleep quality a 4/5 because there is a rooster that does what he is supposed to do every morning - it's nature, deal w/ it and after the first night you don't really notice. All he really does is break the rhythm of the tree frogs and birds. If you are a light sleeper it may wake you in the morning. It really is not a big deal but I like full disclosure on these reviews.

If anyone has specific questions, I would be happy to answer, just shoot me a message.

Thank you Luis - we would be happy to recommend your inn to anyone traveling to Panama.

We had an incredible stay and were really impressed with the quality of this hotel as well as the warmth and organization of it's owners.
1. Great rooms with balcony at tree canopy level perfect for birdwatching, reading, relaxing.
2. Excellent location off the main street, quiet, but close walking distance to town, excellent views of the mountains, set in a beautiful garden. Extremely easy to find just one turn off the main road coming in to town.
3. Very clean modern bathrooms.
4. Amazing meals, healthy and fresh breakfast served in the garden, with the option of gourmet but surprisingly affordable meals in the evening if you wish.
5. Comfortable beds and pillows made for a great night's sleep.
6. The architecture of the hotel is really interesting, great views, great breezes, lots of tropical hardwood, stone, a few romantic narrow stairs.
7. Friendly, honest, knowledgeable, organized owner/operator doing a great job managing the business on site. We really felt well taken care of.
One of our favorite hotels ever!

This was easily the best hotel we stayed in during our trip through the country. Casa Di Pietra is a beautiful stone house that feels cozy, luxurious, and quaint at the same time. Our room had large windows spanning two walls and a door opening to a small balcony. The views from the room were gorgeous. We were really impressed with how well the space was used (all designed by the owner). Everything in the hotel was decorated with class and charm, and included artwork painted by the owner's wife. I also loved that there were hens, roosters, and chicks wandering around outside and I even got to hold a few of the young ones.

Luis, the owner, is an amiable man with loads of unique life experiences which he shared with us over wine one evening. He genuinely wants his customers to be happy and always offers his assistance - he even offered to drive us to an excursion in the morning after breakfast. We told him we really liked a sauce that goes with the Costa Rican rice he served for breakfast - he remembered and gave us a bottle when we left.

The breakfast was really good and I'm sad that I didn't get a chance to eat the dinner he made. The location of the hotel is walking distance to the main part of the town where the little market is. There wasn't a single negative experience we had there and I would definitely recommend this to others. I'm even thinking of coming back with my family to rent out the whole hotel (6 rooms) in the future!

This is an absolutley amazing bed and breakfast. It is the most quaint, European, and luxurious experience that I have had this side of the Atlantic. Definitely eat meals there. Louis' cooking is to die for and make sure to bring a good book. This place is the perfect place to chill and relax.

I simply loved it! Really cozy place, decorated with such great taste and tons of little details. It felt like home, didn't want to leave. The best part of it was the nice people. Don Luis, the owner, is a great person. He made me feel home.

I recommend this place to anyone who wants to relax for a whole weekend and want to feel pampered.

By far, the best place in El Valle.
