“Hidden gem in the hills of Santa Teresa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2009

We stayed two nights here. What a great little place. There are a several bungalows, a hostel and apartments at this hotel. You can hear any little noise here so bring earplugs or an IPOD to help you sleep. We stayed in bungalow 1 - loved laying in the hammock and listening to the birds, bugs and monkeys. The outdoor shower is also an interesting feature. We even took advantage of the bbq and cooked dinner here both nights. There is an interesting mix of people that stay here and you can meet everyone while cooking dinner in the kitchen up the hill. Gaby, the owner is awesome, She is super friendly and will answer any questions about your vacation here. No credit cards are accepted so bring cash. It is about a 10 minute walk to the beach from here

We stayed here for three nights and wished we could have stayed there for 300 more! what a great place. everyone who worked here was so friendly and would offer great advice about activities or transportation.
Since all the bungalows where taken we ended up staying in the AC apartment. It cost a little much, but the views, size, cleanliness, and AC were definitely worth it.
The best part of this place though is Rafael the cook! He does breakfast and dinner 6 nights a week. We thought we would try other places in town, but after our first meal we ate every other meal here. For breakfast he cooks a great breakfast burrito, or pancakes, all with coffee and fruit. For dinner he has different specials every night, from fresh rolled sushi to seared ahi, juicy steaks, and an amazing chicken curry. Even if you don't stay here, its worth stopping by for a meal, all meals are $4-8!
I will definitely be back!

Me and my buddy recently stayed four nights at the Funky Monkey. We were in Bungalow #1. The Bungalow was the farthest away from the bar so there was little to no noise except for the sounds of the jungle that woke me up every morning. Those howler monkeys get up early.

The room was spotless and cleaned daily. The open air bathroom included. There is no TV, no AC and I did not miss either one. The ceiling fan was quite sufficient. The only thing was a street light that stayed on all night shined in the Bungalow when the doors were open. There is WIFI in the room and a TV in the common area if you need it. The property is gated and very secure. The in room safe kept my valuables safe when I was out of the room.

The staff provided exceptional service. From check in to check out. The food was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced and prepared fresh made to order. Ask Frederico for a surfing lesson. Just 35 bucks board included.

I have no complaints other than I am at home now and not at the Funky Monkey.

WOW!!! I have stayed at some pretty amazing hotel, villas and condos from Kauai to Cozumel this year and the Funky Monkey beat them all, hands down.

We stayed in bungalow #1 February 20th-24th. The place was charming, super clean and epitomized what a stay in the remote Costa Rican jungle should be.

The food was very inexpensive and fantastic. We truly felt like family by the second night. The entire staff was so friendly and on the ball. Gaby, the proprietress had done an amazing job with the property. ANYTHING you need... she's got you covered.

The outdoor bathroom/shower was a kick and a little hard to get used to at first. Showering under the bright stars after a day on the beach is just a magical experience.

The main gate closes at 11 pm or so. Your vehicle is completely safe inside the compound. The bar closes around 10:30 pm and quiet time follows.

There is a safe in the room so you can lock all your valuables away. The hammock is really nice to hang out in in front of the bungalow. The wifi is great. Bring your laptop. I have a world phone and had cell service on the I.C.E network (GSM).

It's hot during the day, but in the evening it cools down and is very comfortable. Bring ear plugs if your a light sleeper. The jungle is a loud place after 3 am. Birds, monkeys, cool frogs and beautiful little bats.. all start to sing. It's incredible.

If your lucky enough to get a reservation at the Funky Monkey you will not be disappointed. I can't think of one negative thing to say. It was truly a one of a kind experience. I will be going back and perhaps staying for a month at some point in the future.

You definitely need a 4wd to make it into in Santa Teresa safely. The road suddenly turns from pavement into a the most crazy "road" you can possibly imagine. go slow and pay attention.

Just stayed for the second time at Funky Monkey. The location is brilliant, just five minutes from the best surf in the area, and still nestled away in the trees so you get some privacy and some quiet at night. The atmosphere is super friendly, the food is top - variety every night. There is a private pool to chill away from the ocean, they've got ATV's, boards, pool table, movies. The rooms are great - I stayed in the dorm. There is cleaning service daily, and other guests were travelers/surfers from all over the world. At the end of the day its the people who make this place. THe owners are fantastic and very helpful. If you are going to Santa Teresa than this is where you should stay.

We only stayed here one night and had just come from Shaka Surf Camp up the road, which we love. Funky Monkey was affordable, I think $100 with a/c. No bargain, but decent.

If you get a room with a/c you'll have a long walk up the stairs to carry your luggage, etc.

It was clean and had nice views, but not very charming.

Things we did not enjoy:
- They lock the gates at 9pm, so if you have a car you're not really allowed in or out
- After we check into our room WITH A/C, which we turned on upon check in, we left for a short trip to the bank. After coming back the staff had gone into each of our rooms, opened all the windows and turned off the a/c. We were gone for 20 mins!
-After we were in our rooms and turned the a/c back on THE STAFF OPENED OUR DOOR AND CAME IT TO SEE IF WE WERE IN THE ROOMS. ANNOYING!
- A/C is 2 ft from the bed and is either on full blast or off, no way to control the temps
- at night all the lights are shut off. Even in the hallway to your room there was no lights on. This is a big deal when it's pitch black outside and you're walking up the longest set of stairs known to man.

Much better places to stay in Santa Teresa.

A true "Surfers Lodge". Owners and staff all avid surfers. Sushi Night is a big hit must not be missed. Rooms are very basic but comfortable and roomy. Don't plan on always having hot water, seems as if there system is a little finicky. Easy walk to everything, grocery store, restaurants, surf rental, etc. Pretty Good Value.
