“A slice of paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2011

Casa Azul is right at the beach, within walking distance of all the amenities the little community has to offer. It’s a beautiful spot, a touch of paradise, with the constant sound of the roaring waves close at hand.

The website photos capture the facilities but can’t do justice to the ambience … the roar of the ocean, the shimmer of the sun-heated pool, the iguanas roaming the grounds, the bright yellow fly catchers chattering in the branches above, the little brown and white something or others that flutter down to search out crumbs on the deck; the heat, the sand, the surf.

Our host Richard, an American expat, is clearly proud of his small hotel. Part personal getaway, part business; it’s an idyllic spot. He works hard to provide guests with all the info they need to make the most of their stay.

We had both an ocean view room and the small casita which includes kitchen facilities. The accommodations were clean, comfortable and had beautiful views of the pool and ocean. No internet available, but all the local cafes and restaurants have wireless.

One of the few accommodations right on the beach, Casa Azul offers easy access to excellent surfing and a beautiful stretch of white sand beach. During dry season, the main road is dusty and we appreciated being closer to the beach than the road. Lots of restaurants, grocery stores and banks within a few minutes’ walk.

As other reviewers have noted, a night club just down the road plays loud music late into the night several times each week. This can be disruptive and is really the only negative about this location. For us, the view, the pool, the beach and the peaceful grounds more than made up for the noisy neighbour.

From our travel blog: “Cold beer to ward off the heat, or fruity rum thingys to enhance it; lots of sunblock, good sunglasses, a hammock and an unfinished book; a dip in the ocean followed by a dip in the pool and a comfy chair to sun dry. Another lovely day of more of the same tomorrow.”

We have been going to this area annually for years and finally found the spot that really works for us. Casa Azul is right on the main surf beach, with a great pool, terrific views of the ocean, and a relaxing environment (not to mention it is right across from the bakery - don't miss "Monday Madness" all you can eat pizza!). Richard, the owner, is accomodating and helpful and helped us to feel really safe. We'll be back over and over...

We stayed at Hotel Casa Azul in March 2011 for 4 days and it was a perfect stay.
The location is pitoresque (30 meters to the beach, just a nice pool is in your way to the Pacific shorebreaks) and the hotel is clean, safe and well managed by the owner Richard.
As safety (theft) is always an issue when travelling to latin America, the hotel offers plenty of locks before you can enter your room, an in-room safe of the size of a small Fort Knox and metal fences to the terrace that can be locked. However, we didn't have any problems at all concerning opportunistic thiefs or anything else.
If you are interested in an all-inclusive hotel, this is probably not the right place for you to stay. But if you want to escape to one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica, fall asleep to the sound of the shorebreaks and drink your coffe in the morning while watching exotic birds, squirrels and other Costa Rican wildlife, this is definetely the place for you to stay.
We have only one recommendation: Cool down the pool! It's so hot in Costa Rica in March that the nice and clean pool heats up quickly into a Japanese bathtup ;-)

We can only recommend this place.

Good location on the beach if you don't mind loud bar music coming from both sides until the wee hours of the morning. I like to listen to the surf when I sleep but even with the air conditioner on, the doors closed and ear plugs it was difficult to tune out. Sorry to say I think there are better places on the beach for the money and certainly better places where you can hear the surf - not exactly on the beach but pretty darned close. Watch your back no matter where you are in this area - leave nothing unattended. There is no security at this hotel or beach front.

richard8294, Owner at Hotel Casa Azul, responded to this review, June 9, 2012
Hello to all our clients and prospective clients. I am Richard Sommer, the owner and manager.

Trip Advisor has been a very helpful tool in my personal travels as well as those of many of our clients at hotel casa azul. I have been encouraged by several of our clients to respond to this march 5, 2011 review. The reviewer points out two very important concerns in our town, Mal Pais/Santa Teresa. First, security is an issue we all need to be aware of and take actions to protect our valuables. We have no local police stationed in our town. The nearest police are located in Cobano and Paquera. Response times are generally 1 to 2 hours. The culture in Costa Rica is not one that focuses on security, there are no armed forces for example. The culture is very passive and forgiving, and as a result some take advantage of this environment. Like anywhere you travel, you need to watch your valuables. To all our arriving guests at hotel casa azul we stress the need to bring inside your flip-flops, swim wear, etc at night. We have custom made steel lock up boxes with heavy duty paddle locks, in all but one of our accommodations. No one has ever lost anything they had locked in these boxes. We have good door locks, bars on the windows, and night security lighting. We tried working with the only 'professional' guard company in 2011. This accomplished little, clients that left there belongings outside at night or left doors unlocked, still lost some items, about 6 events in 2011. For the 2012 high season we hired our own guard. As of June 2012 we have had three events, one bikini, one set of flip flops and three of my hammocks. The guard can not watch everything all the time. If items are left outside at night, they may go missing. If you are new to traveling in Central America, or traveling in general, you need to be aware of your belongings. I recommend you keep your valuables on your person. If you go to the beach, and want to swim, ask a fellow traveler to watch your stuff, take turns, and help each other out. Do not assume that your stuff is safe.

The second issue the reviewer commented on is the 'noise issue'. Yes, we have noise in our town. I have been here since 1999. I built hotel casa azul, and i have watched our town change over the years. Our town is all about the surf, the beach, the environment, yoga and party. Lots of people come here from all over the world to hang on the beach, surf, enjoy, relax and party. Party means noise. The entrance to hotel casa azul is located 100 yards from the crossroads of town. The hotel itself is 150 yards from the main road entrance down on the beach. 150 yards to our right, is the now closed bar Tabu or D&N. It has been closed since september 2011. There is a new beach bar, Cocoloco Bar, on the lot to our left. about 40 yards from my fence line. Cocoloco Bar opened in December 2011. This bar parties loud 4 nights a week, in general, from 11 pm to 2.30 am. It is a problem for some guests. Besides a rare local event in the neighborhood, we have only gotten noise from either Tabu or Cocoloco. Neither bar has been in operation during the same months. We are working with the local and federal government agencies to address this issue, but it is a very slow process. As i did with this reviewer and all my clients, we make clients aware of the noise and crime issue before they reserve. Or before they agree to stay if they are winging it and just passing through town looking for somewhere to stay.

One comment i disagree with is 'better places on the beach for the money'. Show me. I have been in almost all of them, i know the owners, and i know their prices. Hotel Casa Azul offers excellent value and location, which is why we have one of the highest repeat and referrals in our market.

The reviewer is also right that there is no security on the beach. This is true in our entire town, there is no public security, nor private, on the beach.. It is your stuff, you have to be responsible for it. At hotel casa azul we provide you with many suggestions and tools to protect your stuff. If you use them, you will not lose you stuff.

Thank you for your time and this opportunity to help explain our environment.
Please stop in for a visit, i will be happy to help you and answer whatever questions you may have about our area.

Sincerely, Richard

We were in Casa Azul for 4 nights in january and I would go back tomorrow. Owner is cool, very present and really welcoming. Location is the best, close from everything that you need during your stay. We had the private house outside the main building and we were super private. The land is oustanding with a lot of vegetation, birds, iguanas. The pool is nice and clean, just as the rooms and the rest of the property. It's one of the rare hotel on the area to be on the beach so, for your next holidays, don't hesitate and call Richard for a resrvation. Stephane

Had a great stay at casa azul. Book ahead and enjoy a surfing holiday where you can just look out the balcony of your room to see if the waves are any good.
Surfed 5 hours a day for two weeks.
Me and my wife will definately come back.

Casa Azul is a fabulous place to stay. You can walk right out the back door and surf. Come back and walk to many restaurants close by for Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner. If you are not a beach person you can hangout back in the hammocks and enjoy the pool. You see many birds, monkeys, and Iguanas on property too. The layout of the grounds is top notch and meticulously maintained. Richard your host is fabulous, he has books and handouts available to provide you with info of the area (massages, Yoga, Zip Lining, fishing, Scenic areas etc.). Make sure you check the ferry schedule if you come into Mal Pais/Santa Theresa. It is 2 hours from San Jose to the ferry at Puntarenas, 1.5 hour ferry ride and then two hours to Mal Pais/Santa Theresa. The distance is not far 150km 95 miles total. You can also fly to the Nicoya Peninsula on a very light commuter aircraft to shorten the trip. Not sure if they take surfboards though. There is a small fishing village where you can go fish from at a reasonable price. IT WAS A GREAT TRIP!!! I wish I could stay longer. Mike & Amy from Florida. We will be coming back.
