“Awesome place!! Great atmosphere and oceanview”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2012

We were supposed to stay at Red Frog Villas for 2 weeks but ended up staying for 2 months. Itś a great hidden place upon the hill where you get to see the ocean. Just down the road you have everything you need such as great restaurants, super mercados, surf shops and of course the beach. The steep hill is a really good work out so you won´t accetentely forgot something in the cabina ;) All the cabinas has a kitchenette and the large villa has a communal kitchen. Itś not always super clean and the dust gets in everywhere since the cabinas are more or less open aired (covered up with mosquitonet). But the dust is way worse down the road. The people that runs the place are really the best, very service minded and helpful with everything. We can really recommend this place if you want to stay in a more relaxed place away from the bars and restaurants. Pura vida :)

Overall, this place is very mediocre for similarly priced places in Santa Teresa. I've spent a little over 5 months in Costa Rica over the past 8 years and stayed in about 9 different places. I feel like I have a pretty good take on price and quality. I did not feel like the price was consistent with the quality with this place. I don't mean to trash-talk Alfredo, because he's a very nice guy. The things I was disappointed in could definitely be taken care of pretty easily. My review is limited to the house, because that's where we stayed.

My first impression on walking in was that the place hasn't been THOROUGHLY cleaned in quite a while. It's pretty clean from the waist down. I was disappointed to find trash around the pool area. The metal lounge chairs by the pool have white fabric cushions that were overgrown with black mold in many places. . The fridge condensates and leaks on the kitchen floor, quickly making a mess if you walk in with flip-flops on unaware. The pool has no use regulations, which might seem to be a good thing until a big group shows up from the villas downhill blaring music from their boombox (I'm talking old-school BOOMBOX!) splashing around drinking Imperial all afternoon. We honestly couldn't see the bottom of the chest-high pool the next day, no doubt from all the trips in and out without showering, not to mention breaking the seal from bottles upon bottles of Imperial! The second day, they were at it again all afternoon till an hour past dark. The third day, Angie (the live-in property girl) told us the pool was shut down. The house could also use some sun-shades--being on the porches or inside from about 12:30 till 4 is not very pleasant. A hammock or swing on the downstairs porch would also be really sweet. The one upstairs is sagging and uncomfortable from too many fat Americans. (I'm from America). There's other things, like the trickle of water that comes out of the master bath sink, but let's focus on the positive: the kitchen is well-equipped, the pool is a nice place to cool off if it's available, you can see the ocean, when Alfredo is around he is helpful, and it's up quite a hill but close to the markets and food places.

Like I said, all of the negative things could be taken care of without too much effort to make this run-down place feel welcoming again. However, without this basic maintenance I wouldn't stay there again or recommend it to friends. There are other places for the same price in Santa Teresa that are clean and well-maintained. We were just a larger group this time and thought we'd give the place a try.

I´m from the canary islands and I was at Red Frog Villas for 5 days. I had a great time vacation while resting and relaxing in a very good vibe place. We were 6 people so we took the house to stay. Very big house, spacious, comfortable and very clean. It was the perfect place for us to spend time together. The hotel is a quick walk from the beach. The staff of the place was very helpful and friendly. Thank you very much for this wonderful time! Pura Vida!
RECOMENDED PLACE ... for sure!

Red Frog Villas was affordable and amazing. Alfredo, the land-lord, was one of the friendliest people ever. Any time we needed anything, he provided it. As for the cabins themselves, they are great. Property is secure and safe and locks are provided. There was also a pool, which was nice. Great view from the property of the ocean and sunsets. No hot water, but most places in Santa Teresa don't have hot water, so don't waste time seeking that out. The weather is so warm there is no need.
The location is perfect. It's at the top of a hill near the centre of town, close to everything you need. I couldn't think of a better location. It's quiet and peaceful enough if you want to relax, but a five minute walk from all the action if you want a good time.

I can't recommend this place enough!

House was quite dirty - didn't look like they had cleaned it thoroughly in awhile. Kitchen is large, which is nice, but frig leaks water all over the floor regularly. Don't touch the exposed wiring in the upstairs shower unless you want quite a shock. Water is cold except for upstairs large room, where you have scalding hot or cold! Only one room has AC. If you can, go across the street to HOrizons - it is awesomely maintained.

We stayed at red frog villas for three nights and unfortunately due to the recent landslide we did not experience it at its best. The pool and internet were down.
Nonetheless we had a good time and found the place great to relax, be in touch with nature and enjoy the ocean view from the hammock/cabina balcony. We found that the cabinas were well equipped with fridge, hob and enough cuttlery, plates, etc. We had regular visits from a small kitten and found the host Angie very welcoming and friendly. Try her amazing banana bread for 1000 colones. She bakes it fresh every morning.
Just above the villas is also an amazing restaurant that you most try. The food was out of this world. To the red frog villas is a very steep hill, so if you are not fit or if like me you have had a recent knee surgery you will struggle up hill. There is always the option of calling a taxi though.

Room Tip: Choose a cabina at the back, near the pool, as it can be noisy at the front cabinas which are close...
