“Ranchos Itauna located in paradise, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2012

Our time at Ranchos Itauna was SPECTACULAR, I mean it's hard to complain about such a fantastic location, with stunning visuals, and a perfect view of the sunset over the Pacific. We are not surfers, and rather came here for the R&R. We arrived after Easter but before the Rainy season hit. Intentionally timing this as to avoid crowd, our timing was perfect, as there were few people around, and so we could enjoy the beach in virtually total privacy. Peter is an awesome guy (Austrian surfer), however as Canadians we had to let go of our ideals/expectations for customer service. The problems are your own, and if you experience any issues, that's just kind of tough. We had MAJOR issues with the A/C in our room, but they were intermittent, sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't, as a result Peter thought we didn't know how to operate the remote, and that we were making it up... tough for us. The rooms were clean (Costa Rican clean), but there were a crap load of biting red ants, and we got our legs bit up every night!!! nasty. We did not travel alone (there were 5 of us) so we took up 3 of Peter's four rooms. All of us got bit by ants at night. A small price to pay I suppose for the glorious experience of the beach. We were literally laying out on the beach in absolutely privacy for most of the 8 days we were there. The restaurant was not open while we were there except for one night, then the chef just took off apparently. The beach bar was totally awesome (2 cocktails for 4000 colones, which is about $8 US)... The beach, views, wildlife, and rooms were awesome. On our last night there I broke the PLASTIC key off in our room safe, it was apparently my fault, and I was responsible for the cost of replacing the safe. What a gong show getting someone into this remote surfing town to open that safe. Almost concerned we would miss our flight due to the fact that our passports and all our money were in that safe. Luckily Peter came through, aggressively making sure we knew that all these issues were OUR fault.... anyway, we didn't let it ruin anything. PURA VIDA BABY. That's the mantra you must live by if your down here. After all the only thing that is on time is the tide.

Room Tip: Four rooms here, they are all good. Though I'd recommend the top floor!

“Peace and Nature & Oceanfront living !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2011

I stayed there for two weeks end of august/beginning of september 2011.
Had the best holidays ever... Hammock between the palm trees, surf twice a day, the best food and great weather for the rainy or "green" season. The surf was great, but too big for me on a few days. Ask Peter the owner, he's the man with tight knowledge on the surf conditions down there. I also had virtually no Mosquitos, got bitten only 5 Times in 2 Weeks. The rooms are big and as the bathrooms cleaned every day.
The standard of hygenie therefore is really high at itauna.
However, make sure the regular bus really passes by itauna during green season. The roads get really bad due to the erosion from rain and vehicles, and you might have to get off in playa del carmen. My recommendation, even though I would like to have this place to myself ;-) :
GO THERE, you will not regret it!

“Strategically located, quiet, good price, good food. Go there!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2011

The couple that run the business did a very good job choosing the place and building the facilities. It's right between Malpais and Santa Teresa beaches, strategically positioned if you're checking the surf, and also a short walk to a variety of restaurants and a mini-market.
Price is ok considering what you get: clean and quiet rooms, wi-fi internet, yoga classes in the morning and local surfing tips from Peter, the friendly Austrian-born owner/surfer/barman.
And never mind the language: Deutsche, Portuguese, English, Spanish... this guy speaks everything!

“A haven of peace on the beach at a reasonable price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2010

This place is just like paradise... The hotel is right on the beach. It is quiet, only birds, monkeys, geckos, squirrels and crabs! The only thing you have to do is enjoy and relax... The beauty of the surrounding, the beach, the surf, coconuts... Nature and peace all around you...
