Our time at Ranchos Itauna was SPECTACULAR, I mean it's hard to complain about such a fantastic location, with stunning visuals, and a perfect view of the sunset over the Pacific. We are not surfers, and rather came here for the R&R. We arrived after Easter but before the Rainy season hit. Intentionally timing this as to avoid crowd, our timing was perfect, as there were few people around, and so we could enjoy the beach in virtually total privacy. Peter is an awesome guy (Austrian surfer), however as Canadians we had to let go of our ideals/expectations for customer service. The problems are your own, and if you experience any issues, that's just kind of tough. We had MAJOR issues with the A/C in our room, but they were intermittent, sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't, as a result Peter thought we didn't know how to operate the remote, and that we were making it up... tough for us. The rooms were clean (Costa Rican clean), but there were a crap load of biting red ants, and we got our legs bit up every night!!! nasty. We did not travel alone (there were 5 of us) so we took up 3 of Peter's four rooms. All of us got bit by ants at night. A small price to pay I suppose for the glorious experience of the beach. We were literally laying out on the beach in absolutely privacy for most of the 8 days we were there. The restaurant was not open while we were there except for one night, then the chef just took off apparently. The beach bar was totally awesome (2 cocktails for 4000 colones, which is about $8 US)... The beach, views, wildlife, and rooms were awesome. On our last night there I broke the PLASTIC key off in our room safe, it was apparently my fault, and I was responsible for the cost of replacing the safe. What a gong show getting someone into this remote surfing town to open that safe. Almost concerned we would miss our flight due to the fact that our passports and all our money were in that safe. Luckily Peter came through, aggressively making sure we knew that all these issues were OUR fault.... anyway, we didn't let it ruin anything. PURA VIDA BABY. That's the mantra you must live by if your down here. After all the only thing that is on time is the tide.
