“Pranamar lives up to it's name!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2011

I will start by saying that I have no affiliation with anyone at Pranamar. My wife and i just got back from a great week at Pranamar. We choose Costa Rica this trip as we didn't have 2 weeks to go to europe this year but wanted to do something other than go to the beach in Hawaii. Santa Teresa is like going to Hawaii but 75 years ago without all the commercial crap and prices. We had bungalow #1 and it exceeded our expectations. The rooms were clean, spacious and tastefully decorated. Our day would start with Nancy in the Yoga Shala followed by a wonderful breakfast then exploring, beach time or just hanging in our beautiful room. The food there is outstanding. We tried several other places to eat but Prananmar always came out on top. The chef loves to sing in italian while cooking and it is very entertaining. that brings me to the staff... Everyone is kind, helpful and wants you to have a good time. The owner ( Fred??) spent an hour with us going thru the landscaping on the property. In the short time that the hotel has been there, the plants are doing amazing. We love working in our garden and to share his love for his creative plant combinations was something you don't usually get. I would be remise if I didn't mention Nancy. My wife and I have have really been working on our yoga practice for the past year and Nancy was wonderful to be with for the week. She had a wonderful way of relating to us and our time in the yoga shala was tremendous. We took a private lesson from Nancy which I would recommend it. We also took surf lessons that week which was fun and a treat. We are from Northern California where we wear wetsuits year round.

All and all you can tell that we had a great time . We got some good rest, practiced our yoga and ate some great food. We are fans of Prananmar!!

This is Nancy writing to thank you both for being such a joy to teach. It was my pleasure to assist you in your yoga practice and it is always an honor for me to have such willing and open students in my classes. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay with us and I hope you'll come back soon for more bliss on the beach!!

Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Gorgeous pool and surroundings. GREAT rooms/villas! I absolutely loved the set up. We stayed in a two floor/two bathroom villa right next to the pool. We did yoga each morning in the shala enjoying the view and sounds of the ocean. So relaxing. Breakfast and lunch were delicious. Dinner was not the best, but wasn't bad by any means. I would have liked to do a little more advanced yoga, but Nancy, the instructor, was great, knowledgable and helpful.

While it seems like most of Santa Teresa is "off the beaten path" Pranamar is about a 15 minute ride from "downtown Santa Teresa" and without paved roads it feels like a bit of a hike. Would have liked to have made it out while we were there, but we did trips during the day and relaxed at night. Would definitely recommend this place if you want a nice, relaxing vacation in an amazing beautiful location.

Room Tip: I really don't think there's a bad room in this place.

Thanks so much for writing and letting us know what you loved about Pranamar. I am thinking that you must have missed my Advanced Yoga classes on Thursday and Saturday at 9am. I always am very mindful of the different mixed levels in my classes and try to create a challenging, but safe space for everyone to practice in. I also teach private yoga classes which can be tailored to your exact needs and practitioner level. I hope you'll come back and check out our Yoga retreats happening throughout the year.

So, we got married in Costa Rica and then headed to Playa Santa Theresa just the two of us. We actually stayed at Flor Blanca, up the street from Pranamar. But I am telling you, we spent most if not all of our time, coming to Pranamar. There is nothing wrong with Flor Blanca (see my review). But, Pranamar blew us away. It had the best food we had our entire trip in Costa Rica (we would dine there 2 times per day). Nancy, the yoga instructor, also had the most amazing space and we would go to her yoga classes every morning, followed by an unbelievable breakfast. Since we did not stay there, I cannot review the rooms, but next time we visit, we will definitely stay at Pranamar.

The minute you arrive at Pranamar, you know you are somewhere truly special... from the beautiful gardens, the tranquil pool and the white sand beach to the luxurious villas, the stunning yoga shala, and the amazing restaurant. We slept like babies in our beachfront villa... falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves... we never wanted to leave! The restaurant is world class - amazing, fresh, daily specials and the tropical cocktails and smoothies are to die for! Not to mention the staff, eager and willing to help with anything you need, and always with a smile on their faces. A place that you have to see to truly believe... we will definitely be back to this oasis in paradise.

We stayed at Pranamar for our honeymoon for 5 nights at the end of July. We were nervous about it being the rainy season but we only had one big storm the knocked-out the power at night during our stay. The storm was during dinner at the hotel and the staff continued to work by candle light. It was a romantic, exciting meal. At other times during our stay it rained but never did the rain prevent us from enjoying our experience.
Pranamar is about 50 minutes from the Tambor airport via a taxi (~$55 one way). The hotel arranged a private taxi for us to travel to and from the airport. The driver was very reliable and early to pick us up on both occasions. Motion sickness alert: the roads are very bumpy and windy, but incredibly beautiful! Being "off the beaten path" allowed us to have a quiet, romantic honeymoon.
Pranamar is a wonderful place with friendly staff, good food, fabulous non-alcoholic beverages, and a unique architectural design. The hotel offered us an all-inclusive package with wine, breakfast and dinner, 2 couples massages, and yoga sessions. The best value of the all-inclusive package was the food. Pranamar is located on the edge of Santa Teresa, making it a long walk to go to resturants, the market, etc. Pranamar does offer an ATV for rent at $50 for the day, however this makes dining out expensive. It was wonderful having the convenience of the resturant right on site. Also, the dinner menu was different every night so you were never lacking for unique choices in cuisine. The breakfast and lunch menus did not change much, however plenty of options were offered that we never tired of the food (definately try the coconut french toast).
We stayed in Villa 2. The villa has a wonderful open air concept as the walls of the rear of the house are bamboo posts covered with screens. At first it took some getting used to because you could hear other people walking by and it sounded like they were right in your villa. The villa also has an open air garden shower on the first floor which is amazing. The only draw back were the bugs in the villa but this was easy to overlook being in the rainforest in such a beautiful place. After a day acclimating, I loved the concept. The front of the villa has sliding glass doors with screens that open to the huge porch. The doors and screens are beautiful but somewhat difficult to slide and to lock. Being on the outskirts of town, I never felt that security was an issue but I would have preferred to have securely locked front doors at night when sleeping. The rear door to the villa locked completely. Sleeping wasn't a problem because the bed was very comfortable with huge fabulous pillows! We slept very well while staying at Pranamar.
The beach in front of Pranamar is beautiful. It is partially sand (closer to the jungle line) and mostly pebbles, somewhat dependent on the tide. The pebbles make a beautiful sound as they come in and out with the waves that we could here from our bedroom. Sandy beaches don't produce this kind of music. It was wonderful to listen to laying in bed at night. Water sandals were nice to have to walk on the beach because the pebbles are not comfortable on your feet. Also, if walking at night, the beach is crawling with hermit crabs so shoes were nice to have. With a 5 minute walk the beach became sandy and was a great place to surf.
Santa Teresa is a wonderful little village. It is spread out along a dirt road that parallels the coast. It is a decent walk to go from one edge of the town to the other. Santa Teresa has great resturants, some shopping, a few grocery stores and plenty of places to rent surfboards and ATVs or dirtbikes. ATVs appear to be the preferred mode of transportation within the town. Every place we went to in Costa Rica, including Santa Teresa, accepted colones or American dollars without a problem. During our stay we rented an ATV and drove to Montezuma (a cute surf town!) and hiked to a waterfall. It was well worth the drive for many reasons. If you are feeling adventurous, take the road to Montezuma through Mal Pais. It is incredibly beautiful, rugged terrain. On this drive we saw our first and last monkey. If you want to stay nearer civilization, take the main road that goes toward Tambor with a turn to Montezuma. Ask for a map.... Pablo gave us great directions and we had a blast four-wheeling by ourselves through the jungle.
Pranamar also offered surfing lessons while we were there and a spectacular private cooking class with Chef Pablo in our villa. If you get the opportunity to have Pablo share his knowledge about food and culture, do it! He went above and beyond for us. We had a wonderful time and would recommend Pranamar to anyone looking for a quite (there are no TVs or clocks), more up-scale Santa Teresa experience. There are other, more affordable places to stay in Santa Teresa but I am certain that nothing is as nice as Pranamar. I can't say enough about how friendly and helpful the staff are! A special thanks to Marianne, Pablo, Monica and Marco for making our experience so memorable.

Room Tip: Villa 2 was beautiful!

This is one of the most beautiful, tranquil and relaxing resorts that I have had the pleasure of visiting. It is a place to disconnect from everything. The food in the restaurant is abundant and delicious. The staff and the owners treat each other and the guests as family. If you want some activity, there is plenty to do: Yoga in the outdoor Yoga Shala overlooking the beach and jungle, Surfing on the beach, steps from your room, or taking a trip ziplining, horseback riding or hiking.

We didn't stay at Pranamar but ended up hanging out there and doing the 9:00 yoga class with Nancy each morning followed by smoothies at the bar afterwards. We also went there for dinner one night. Our experience was amazing. The yoga classes were fantastic. 90 minutes for $12 at a beautiful open air studio on the beach can't be beat. Nancy is an great teacher.

The dinner was great and a wonderful setting.

Sue the owner spent a lot of time chatting with us each day and giving us the history of the area.

If we ever go back to the area, this is where we will stay. Great vibe and friendly service!
