Set on top of the hills overlooking Santa Teresa and the ocean below, Sonny and his staff have made an experience worth finding. The pictures about this place do not lie, it is amazing. Our group rented the place for the majority of the week for my wedding. Everyone associated with Gumbo Limbo made us feel right at home. We had our ceremony on a beach at another hotel, but everything else was done at this hotel (apps, dinner, cake cutting, and band). Sonny put us in contact with a wedding planner, Rebecca, which fulfilled all of our dreams. Michele is an amazing chef and he has the greatest, uplifting personality. We ate there twice, besides the night we grilled our fresh catch, once on arrival and then for the wedding dinner. Both times were stunningly good, no matter what we were eating. The guy can cook. We enjoyed the trip up the hill, but I could see where this wouldn't be for everyone, especially if you didn’t have a car. Also the rooms are open as the pictures show, so critters will greet you from time to time. But for us these things just enriched a great place with a great view. This place will always be one of our favorite hotels in the world. Not only because of our marriage, but due to its amazing, lasting impression it left on all of us. Kudos to Sonny, Michele, Betty, Eric and everyone at Gumbo Limbo. Hopefully we will be back someday soon.

Not only was the place spectacular, the hospitality beyond accomodating, and the nature magestic... Michele and Sonny (the owners) left such an impression that I will surly return. Gumbo Limbo enhanced my girlfriend and my time in Santa Teresa, so much that we are very much looking forward to returning, but next time, with more people so they too can experience Costa Rica at Gumbo Limbo. The view is beautiful, we woke up on many occasions with howler monkeys crowling across the limbs of the trees right in front of our open sliding doors. We felt safe, and at home. Nonna Tesesa - the restaurant- was EXCELLENT .... Try the gorgonzola Gnocchi, with vino and the company of the guys... truly a stay never to be forgotten. Thanks guys, We'll see you soon!! All the best. Too bad we had to jet before super fly soul party II.

In a quiet location with a great view to the ocean (even from your bed!!!) and delicious food from Michele in its restaurant, this lodge was the best spot to stay above the noisy, dusty and mosquito DDT sprayed Santa Teresa beach. Although they should be more carefull to their obligations to the client since we missed our breakfast twice in four days (not even a cup of coffee) despite the fact that they knew our plans. So I highly recommend the place as a place but make sure that early in the morning there wiil be someone there for you. Other than that, their effort and intentions were very much appreciated.

Santa Teresa is a relaxed surf/party town filled with people from all over the globe. Gumbo Limbo offers a serene escape from the busy, dusty street below by being situated high above in the hills. You need a 4x4 quad (or really strong calves) to reach the hotel but it is totally worth the trek up and down the hill. There is a beach access directly across the street from the hotel. The staff is nice and very accomodating (we had numerous transportation issues and the owners helped us every time). The rooms are clean, the showers are open air, and breakfast is free of charge. The restaurant in the hotel is wonderful for dinner. There are only 4 rooms in the hotel so you really get a sense of it being "your" place rather than being just a nameless guest in a big box hotel. We would love to come back and rent the whole place out with a group of friends. The only downfall I may say is that you do have to share your space with some bugs and the occasional lizard, but it really isn't bad (and I am a girl).

just a simple nice room with no chairs, no fridge and an average service in a great and quiet location-but don't wait for a breakfast on time or anything special.

I don't know where to begin with this review, the obvious would be the amazing natural beauty and the way this hotel was constructed---set on a hilltop with a cascading pool that gives a commanding view of the pacific ocean and the jungle and beautiful landscaping.

My husband and I stayed in the Villa Indio and literally felt like we were in our own first-class secluded hideaway .... but we weren't too far from town and all the happenings.. It was the best of all worlds.

Now on to the good part... The service provided by our new friends Sonny and Michele.. (prounounced Mik-el - ee.. or something like that.

Sonny was very helpful before we arrived. He was responsive with emails to answer any questions we had about Santa Teresa, road conditions and everything else.

While staying at this fabulous resort, Michele prepared some of the best cuisine I think I've ever had. We had intended to eat our dinners at various restaurants in Santa Teresa but once we tried his cooking, all plans changed! We stayed at the hotel and enjoyed his amazing food with the most spectacular view. During the day, Michele made arrangements for us to rent quads and assisted us with everything we needed.

We will be going back to visit our new friends at the Gumbo Limbo.. I highly recommend that anyone reading this review does the same.

We stayed in one of the "deluxe oceanview rooms" and friends of ours stayed in the "Villa Crzu de Sur", so we got a good repesentation of this great hotel. The restaurant was great....the view from the pool is AWESOME...Sonny and Michelli are so fun and helpful and offered such great advice. We really felt like we had our little home for the week. I would definitely rent a 4x4 or quad though. Made the hill up to the hotel much easier. But it was SO worth it to be above to dust and road. I felt so safe being up so high off the main road. Most nights we all just hung out there because it was so relaxing. Sonny and Michelli have lots of connections to help you out with surfboard rentals, other restaruants, ATV rentals, etc. They were extremely helpful. Next time i go back to costa rica, I am definitely going to stay here again. I highly recommend it! You will not regret it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Gumbo Limbo is a unique bed & breakfast located in the hills of Santa Teresa, just 2 minutes to Santa Teresa beach and town. Along with stunning ocean views, Gumbo Limbo's central, hilltop location provides seclusion- a nice break from the dust and bustle of town, while being only a 2 minute drive to the beach and main road. A 4x4 vehicle, which is generally better for Costa Rica roads, is recommended to reach our property. Each of our villas is surrounded by lush, tropical nature, giving total privacy, comfort, and a real feeling of being in the jungle. From every corner of our property, you can find amazing ocean and mountain views. Our beautiful infinity pool is the perfect spot to relax and watch the best sunsets Santa Teresa has to offer. A full breakfast is included in your stay. It is served each morning in our ocean view dining area. Some of our breakfast options include granola and yogurt with fresh fruits, eggs with gallo pinto, or pancakes, all served with fresh Costa Rican coffee. Our guests are our priority. It comes natural for us to host people and make new friends, so it is our pleasure to cover every small detail and accommodate our guests' needs so that they have the best time while staying with us. Many of our guests have told us that their experience visiting Gumbo Limbo felt more like staying with old friends, than staying at a hotel. Whether it's sharing a surf session or an Argentinean asado together, we look forward to having you!! ... more   less
