“Great view from a beautiful villa!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2014

We stayed for three nights and loved it here. Our villa had two rooms and a great view from a private terrace. There is a small pool in front of the villa which is very nice. The hotel is on the mountain/hill which is nice because it is quiet and in a very natural surrounding. The hill is difficult to drive up but the owners will drive you up the hill. The breakfast is always the same but very good. There is no dinner available but there are a lot of restaurants down the hill in Santa Teresa. Juan and the other boys working here are super friendly and very helpful. This is a unique b&b and we would definitely stay here again!

Was supposed to stay there for 2 nights for my birthday and lucky me had some friends who made a surprise reservation in another hotel for me and my wife. The Villa that was assigned to us is not even close to what they advertise in their website, very poor maintenance and totally different layout. Though in house staff are really friendly and welcome and they try to accommodate each guest as they are in their house, so that's a nice point for the lucky who gets to the nicer room if they still exist, unfortunately I didn't even had time to see them before I left (after 1 hour of checking in) and im still waiting for at least a response to my email requesting some sort of refund for the nights I didn't sleep there, so far anything yet!!!!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014 via mobile

We stayed there for 3 nights, it was good but we were left just a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong, its a lovely place but its more a B&B than the boutique hotel they market it as on the website. Its under new management , they're great guys but it they're their to surf, not run a hotel. The website talks of international surf school, however this just turned out to be little more than a guy they know. It was good and the guy knew what he was doing but I was quite shocked that we were charged $120 for the 2 of us for 2 hours. The restaurant on their website doesn't exist, which because of its location is a bit annoying. The breakfast there was nice though.
The place is located up a steep hill, you're not getting up without a 4x4. It would have been nice to be told about this. Luckly the guys running it were there so we got a lift with the luggage, though if you get there when they're off surfing it might be a bit tricky. It can get a bit annoying having to walk down and up the hill all the time, it would have been nice if there were shuttles. However the location is awesome, it gives you amazing views over the sea. Also as its off the main road it was nice and quiet. The rooms are nice, no AC though, however you can leave the bay doors wide open so you get great breeze. The pools a nice touch as well but quite small. We also got to see a troop of monkeys pass right by the room, you get to see loads of wildlife there.

We stayed in the villa the second week of january and had a fantastic time! Santa Teresa is beautiful and the Gumbo Limbo - including the amazing view - made sure we had the time to relax. Nice food, relaxed owners who also took us to the beach and made sure we had great fun during our first surf lessons!

Great place! Amazing view, and the best of all great host!
Definitely the place to stay if you are going to santa teresa! And dont forget to try surfing, even if you are a beginner, because they gave the best surf instructors there!
Thanks Gumbo Limbo!

My husband booked our honeymoon at Gumbo Limbo. After all the wedding planning, it was nice to not have to worry about the honeymoon plans too. Since we honeymooned in May (Costa Rica low season) we had the whole place to ourselves. It was so peaceful and serene, away from the noisy cars on the street below. But the best part was the view and the constant ocean breeze.

Down in town it was so hot, but Gumbo Limbo's pool and the breeze was the perfect cool down. The view is nearly 180 degrees of ocean out front and behind the villas is a view of mountainous jungle. It was beautiful. And howler monkeys came right into our bathroom 3 out of 5 mornings!

It is a hike up and down the mountain to town, so we requested a four wheeler to get around and the care taker (Negrito) brought it to us! There is a small fridge to keep drinks in, and a tv with some movie selections for after dark if your not into clubbing or bar hopping.

All in all, it was a perfect ending to our wedding and we look forward to vacationing there again!

Room Tip: Go for a villa!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Gumbo Limbo is a boutique bed & breakfast located in the hills of Santa Teresa, just 600 meters to Santa Teresa beach and town. Along with stunning ocean views, Gumbo Limbo's central, hilltop location provides seclusion- a nice break from the bustle of town, while being only a 2 minute drive to the beach and main road. A 4x4 vehicle, which is generally better for Costa Rica roads, is needed to reach our property. Each of our villas is surrounded by tropical lush nature, giving total privacy and a real feeling of being in the jungle, while still having complete comfort. From every corner of our property, you can find amazing ocean and mountain views. Our beautiful infinity pool is the perfect spot to relax and watch the best sunsets Santa Teresa has to offer. A full breakfast is included in your stay. It is served each morning in our ocean view dining area. Some of our breakfast options include granola and yogurt with fresh fruits, eggs with typical gallo pinto or pancakes, all served with fresh Costa Rican coffee. Our guests are our priority. It comes natural for us to host people and make new friends, so it is our pleasure to cover every small detail and accommodate our guests' needs so that they have the best time while staying with us. Many of our guests have told us that their experience visiting Gumbo Limbo felt more like staying with old friends, than staying at a hotel. Whether it's sharing a surf session or an Argentinean asado together, we look forward to having you!! ... more   less
